• System (ftp) access over the internet issues

Owning a server is great because you can do stuff like host a website or have an FTP server or something along those lines. Well, that is if you can access the server at all. Anyways, no matter what I have tried so far, me and others can't access the server from over the internet. Currently I have TCP port 80 forwarded as well as a bunch of others for my PS3 and so my PSP can remotely access my PS3 (however, again, the PSP can't seem to travel through the internet and remotely do dick-all with my PS3) and am wondering what I am missing. To add a new port to forward, my router has this: Under the CHOOSE SERVICE pulldown I get telnet, ftp, http, snmp, smtp, pptp, and domain and under the CHOOSE PROTOCAL pulldown I get tcp, udp, icmp, and gre. I'm assuming for the service I obviously select ftp but that's as far as I know what to do. Anyone here care to be able to help? FYI, right now the server is setup with a static IP address (192.168.1.108). Should I be specifying that address or use IP Chicken to get the ip address the internet sees my server as?
You use your LAN ip address. Then you tell it what ports (ex. 80) Make sure that your ISP dose not block port 80 as some do. If it dose you can try another port.
Okay, so that would mean I add an instance for an FTP service and redirect the selected service to address 192.168.1.100. Right? EDIT: Telus should not be blocking port 80 as my friend hosts a website on his computer using the same ISP so I assume port 21 is not blocked as well.
Ya you host a FTP on that computer then point the router with the port you want to that ip.
Well, that didn't work at all. You try opening an ftp connection (or even try pinging) to 66.183.126.149 at port 21. It's either going to error our or not connect at all. I don't get it. Everything on the srver is configured, the routher (Siemens SE567) should be properly configured for FTP access forwarded to the server and my ISP (telus) is not blocking the necessary port 21.
Can you get to your web server (or ftp) from the same computer? 127.0.0.1:80
Can you get to your web server (or ftp) from the same computer? 127.0.0.1:80
I don't get what you are saying. my server is in the basement right now. I'm currently operating from a linux computer upstairs. I can connect to the streaming camera web page that is on the server by going to http://192.168.1.100/gust.htm but so far that's strictly for people inside my home network only. the FTP server was setup so that anyone (both inside and outside my network)could get access to it so here in my network I can obviously connect to it using the local address, of course, nobody beyond my network can. Sorry if I am being redundant here but I'm just getting really frustrated.
Hmm, Other than your ISP or router limiting you, I'm really not sure what's wrong.
Hmm, Other than your ISP or router limiting you, I'm really not sure what's wrong.
It has to be something funky with this damn router. I'm telling you. I can get a hamachi connection through it but that is it. nothing else works. I would link you to a manual for the damn thing but of course, the manual that exists uses some other magical interface that is completely different to mine. :bang: EDIT: found out where the DMZ control panel was and even after enabling that, STILL NOTHING!
Are there any firmware updates available?
Are you kidding? The router does not have an option to update the firmware. Because this one was distrubuted by Telus it has a customized firmware on it (which on the downside is throttling my torrenting) so no, I can't update the firmware at all.
Ah that sucks.. Even my ISP's router firmware allows other firmware to be put on it.
Well I confirmed today that indeed, ports 21, 80 and 8080 are in fact blocked by Telus. So I switched over to two other ports, both of which my friend used when he was on telus (switched to Shaw over the weekend) and while they worked fine for him.....what a surprise, IT STILL DOES NOT WORK FOR ME.
You can't connect to your local address from anywhere outside your local network, no matter what you do. You need to set up a DMZ on your router and put it on there, it'll get a real IP address out in the world.
