I really do think that architecture students will come here to see it.” Jobs died four months later, before the final plans could be submitted to Cupertino city planners, though he had made it clear that this corporate Shangri-La would be expensive. Apple would add 6,000 trees and hide almost all the roads and parking spaces underground. There would be plenty of cafeterias, including one that could handle lunch for 3,000 employees. Jobs highlighted the main building’s curved exterior walls. The plans call for unprecedented 40-foot, floor-to-ceiling panes of concave glass from Germany. Before the Cupertino council, Jobs said, “there isn’t a straight piece of glass on the whole building,” adding that “as you know, if you build things, this isn’t the cheapest way to build them.” He had that right. Since 2011, the budget for Apple’s Campus 2 has ballooned to almost $5 billion from less than $3 billion, according to five people close to the project who weren’t authorized to speak on the record.
Some of the requirements from Macrumors
- 6 square kilometers of curved glass manufactured by Seele in Germany using specialized processes to prevent clouding or distortions. Seele has doubled the size of its production facility to accommodate the project. - Per Jobs' orders, gaps between surfaces should be no more than 1/32 of an inch, far tighter than the typical 1/8 inch standard in U.S. construction. - Polished concrete ceilings are to be cast in molds and then raised into position to ensure uniformity, rather than being cast in place. The requirement "left one person involved in the project speechless."
And more from Bloomberg
To achieve its goals of a “net-zero energy” campus, the roof of the spaceship will hold 700,000 square feet of solar panels, enough to generate 8 megawatts of power. (That’s enough to power roughly 4,000 homes.) Apple says it’s negotiating contracts for additional solar and wind power. To keep consumption down, the company plans to install “climate responsive” technology. Judging from the drawings, this will include window treatments that automatically open or close to let in just the right amount of light, wind and fresh air to maintain a comfortable temperature. As with Apple’s products, Jobs wanted no seam, gap or paintbrush stroke showing; every wall, floor and even ceiling is to be polished to a supernatural smoothness. All of the interior wood was to be harvested from a specific species of maple, and only the finer-quality “heartwood” at the center of the trees would be used, says one person briefed on the plan last year.
Looks like it could lift off if some Apple worker accidentally hits the launch button.
Always knew Steve Job's wasn't straight in the head.
That looks awesome.
Got to admire his insistence on perfection and sky-high visionary batshit things like this. And it's not like Apple is short of cash to build it either
Over budget? Well I guess it's time to patent something, what will it be this time the actual fruit or the element carbon?
Corporate dick waving at it's finest.
Sounds useless
I love that design
To achieve its goals of a “net-zero energy” campus, the roof of the spaceship will hold 700,000 square feet of solar panels, enough to generate 8 megawatts of power
Aren't the mass production of solar panels really damaging for the environment?
Looks like something out of deus ex
istargate
They have to tear down 26 buildings to build the bloody thing first? They seem to be boasting environmental friendliness with their TONS of solar panels, but it sure seems different.
Aren't the mass production of solar panels really damaging for the environment?
Photovoltaic panels themselves and the batteries used to store the energy are awfully costly and polluting to produce. The PV panel array would require frequent maintenance and the battery lifetimes range from 3 to 5 years, implying fairly frequent battery changes on a MASSIVE scale. This thing is going to be a bitch to build and maintain. But what does Jobs care, he's dead and left his glorious geometric monstrosity for us to gawk at.
Always knew Steve Job's wasn't straight in the head.
You have to admit it's a good concept/awesome looking building.
Aren't the mass production of solar panels really damaging for the environment?
Right now it's more damaging to itself considering the solar panels market was absolutely flooded by cheap panels mass produced by chinese manufacturers which killed off a good number of smaller companies and a lot of jobs in many countries because entire factories were rendered useless.
They should of unplugged his reality distortion machine after life pulled the plug on him.
There's a difference between having a courtyard and making it pointlessly difficult to get to the other side of the building.
Sounds useless
Why is there always at least one of these posts in a thread where someone tries to make something really cool looking?
You have to admit it's a good concept/awesome looking building.
What Apple haters see:
I swear the lot of you can't push aside your apple hatred for one moment and admire how beautiful and awesome this looks, apple can afford this so it's not like they're busting balls for it Steve Jobs always had a passion for things being perfect and wonderful, and his legend goes on after death which is always nice
What Apple haters see:
Nope we see this... Nevertheless I wonder if it will have flash... [editline]6th April 2013[/editline] Admittedly it does look cool
Nevertheless I wonder if it will have flash...
That shit got old in 2009 man, even android and windows phone has/is ditching flash for mobile
That shit got old in 2009 man, even android and windows phone has/is ditching flash for mobile
I know it got old ages ago, I still chuckled
Hopefully they don't ruin the vision like with Disney's EPCOT and create a half-ass version of the building.
There's a difference between having a courtyard and making it pointlessly difficult to get to the other side of the building.
wouldn't be surprised if there was a monorail or something inside
I swear the lot of you can't push aside your apple hatred for one moment and admire how beautiful and awesome this looks, apple can afford this so it's not like they're busting balls for it Steve Jobs always had a passion for things being perfect and wonderful, and his legend goes on after death which is always nice
While I agree, I always keep in mind that there is a blurred line "using money for the best you can get" and "showing off all of your money" Time will tell what's the case with this. Just saying the Googleplex is more of a Center Parks family wonderland than a futuristic spaceship.
That shit got old in 2009 man, even android and windows phone has/is ditching flash for mobile
Still no good way to port flash content to HTML5, so it's gonna stick around for a few more years
Still no good way to port flash content to HTML5, so it's gonna stick around for a few more years
You can get flash on iOS i believe with jailbreaking it, so you can still get it
Why do they build underground parking in earthquake country?
