Sega Takes Shot At Nintendo, Encourages Fans To Keep Making Sonic Stuff

It’s been a pretty good time for fan games. We’ve had a full scale remake of Metroid 2 and an amazing tribute to Sonic the Hedgehog. Only one of these games has been taken down by corporate forces. Last week, the Game Grumps played Green Hill Paradise Act 2. Sega noticed. And gave a big thumbs up.

Instead of rallying lawyers or striking the Game Grumps and Green Hill Paradise Act 2's team with a copyright claim under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, official Sega social media outreach actively encouraged fans to make more games and content.
On the other side of this coin is Nintendo. They took down Metroid 2 remake AM2R, were hitting enough download sites that the creators of Pokemon Uranium felt they needed to take their game down, placed a strike against the fan mash up No Mario’s Sky and even removed hundreds of fan titles from Game Jolt. Now, the Game Jolt matter was a bit fraught. The site was making advertisement revenue while hosting those particular games. Still, the difference is night and day when it comes to fan games overall.

Christ there is a pain in my chest, the burn is too great, that even I can feel it
help! Help! Someone get zonesylvania! I'm dying!
Sega's usually pretty cool about fan and unofficial content. Even "back in the day", instead of shunning and trying to get rid of/discourage cheat devices like Nintendo did and such, Sega actually licensed a Game Genie for the Master System/Genesis and made it an "official" accessory for the console.
doesn't sega have a problem with dmca overall?
Yeah they still shut down that amazing Streets of Rage remake though didn't they?
Giant corporations are not your friends.
I hope Nintendo takes a note from Sega.
Sega has really been stepping their game up for Sonic.
Making me interested in playing Sonic games, even if they are crap (not all of course)
remember that sega was one of the first ones taking down tons of youtube videos for no reason a few years ago

tbh considering how far more aggressive Nintendo is I doubt that they did anything nearly as bad
Nintendo is absolutely going after everyone they possibly can with videos

They were striking people's videos for reviewing their games which could be worse depending on whether you value income percentage or the entire channel's ability to function more.
well if sega isn't going to make a good sonic game the fans will have to

pretty much what nintendo does
shit, nintendo even made a youtube program and will hit any videos that has 10 seconds of their game
though that doesn't make sega any less shitty i suppose
Remember that time Sega spent close to 20 years making Sonic games trying desperately to make the franchise lay more golden eggs?
oh no
the sonic fanbase is the one you don't want to encourage
Yeah they still shut down that amazing Streets of Rage remake though didn't they?
Yeah, but that was basically a remake that encompassed all three games and then some extra content ontop, while improving on numerous issues and design factors here and there (and making a few questionable ones). It rendered the series invalid except for historical/nostalgia purposes, which was bad seeing as Sega was going to release the games individually online for sale.
It was scummy, but understandable. Meanwhile, SAGE 2016 is on its way and those are pretty much pure celebrations of the Sonic community's fangames, romhacks and modifications.
Well that's one thing that SEGA does and Nintendon't.

If I remember right they took down old shining force videos so videos for their new game could be top result?
Someone should show them Sonic Dreams Collection
oh no

They have a pretty good track record in games, just not the rest.
They did hire those guys to make Sonic Mania. But yeah, Nintendo are seemingly doing what they're forced to by legality but note that they always let fans finish their products and get them out there on people's PCs before taking them down.

Wasn't there an article that proved that this is a myth?

Not always.
There was that one 3d open world pokemon game that got taken down pretty early in development.

The old US Sonic website even had a fanart section.
[sp]It's where the "Gotta Go Fast" image comes from[/sp]

IIRC that's the reason why TotalBiscuit to this day refuses to review games that have anything to do with Sega, and he'll keep it up until they have apologized for what they've done.
well if sega isn't going to make a good sonic game the fans will have to
Nintendo haven't touched Metroid in years, so fans feel forced to make good games for that too, and AM2R is fantastic.
AM2R was an objectively better version of a game Nintendo is still selling. Metroid Confrontation was not.

That's really shitty, my assumption is Nintendo don't want that out there so people know it's a thing. I've wanted a 3D open world pokemon game since I was like 10 or something and I doubt Nintendo want people asking why they aren't doing anything other than same game over and over with Pokemon.
I remember a while back, many months ago watching a guy streaming his progress of Sonic Lost World modding, and the official Sonic account came on the stream to chat. Unfortunately, since YouTube does not save the chat logs, I don't have much proof aside from a few screenshots of maybe two comments he made.
The guy behind the Sonic social media accounts seems to be a pretty big fan of Sonic fan games and modding, but I'm not sure if his opinions are representative of all of Sega.
sonichu endorsement when
Just looked this game up and Jesus Christ it oozes with potential. Sega for god's sake, there's your golden egg. Hire this dev right the fuck now.
I would absolutely pay for a full polished release of this.
