Hello, I'd like to know what you guys about the two measurement systems, wich one is better, more functional, if one should get removed just to consolidate measurements in the whole world..
But please dont just say "I prefer imperial cuz that's what I'm used to".
Personally, being born in Italy I'm used to the metric system, and I like the fact that every is in factor of 10, and it has become the international system of units.
Why do you even ask this. Metric system actually makes sense and is used in science.
Stupid americans trolling the whole world with their weird units.

Metric because it just makes more sense being all in the powers of 10.
I prefer the metric system, the imperial system confuses the hell out of me when I am not concentrating.
Metric
Imperial units doesnt make any fucking sense
"Oh I need to know how many feet 10 inches is, oh fuck, forgot my calculator"
Metric since it's far more logical
Metric, it's far better to use it instead of Imperial in technical drawing (something that is done in my Engineering course). Although I wasn't raised with the Imperial system (so I can't really say much bad about Imperial), the amount of detail we go into would lead to a great deal of confusion in the Imperial system.
It's funny how Imperial is still so relevant in Australian society, yet Metric was adopted decades ago. Some land recently acquired by my father was measured in acres, some bolts and other associated things also may have Imperial measurements and in typical conversation, Imperial measurements are used instead of Metric (especially with older people).
Why the Imperial system is still used is beyond me.
It is, like others have said, really confusing.

Ignore the D/M/Y thing.
Metric is superior because it is far more logical.

the UK.
nearly all of its cars have speedos in MPH, the news usually usese miles and feet and inches
Obviously the Metric system is better but to be honest I prefer the Imperial system because that's what I have always used.
Metric, because it just makes more sense than Imperial.
the UK.

metric is the official system of measurements of the uk
almost all industries are metric, all packaging is metric and all buildings/infrastructure like roads are only constructed using metric and signage is converted afterwards.
also any trader that measures the weight of fruit and vegetables or other goods at say a market must have metric scales and then convert to imperial if they wish to display imperial units (but they must display alongside metric ones, otherwise it is illegal)
with the news you will often find that people are using both systems at the same time in one article or whatever (have seen this more times i can count)
There's this inexplicable measurement unit called "furlong per fortnight".
It's a barely noticeable measurement of speed, 1 furlong per fortnight = 0.000166309524 m/s.
Anyway. How do you Americans "deal with" science? This question, of course, is primarily aimed at people actually having experience with any mid-high level physics, mathematics and/or chemistry so that they have actually spent a significant time with their calculator. Surely you need to paraphrase any imperial unit to metric, or how does that work?
Dunno, I prefer metric, but I use imperial out of habit. "It's a few miles down the road" etc.
Imperial units, at least the ones that are commonly used, are more relevant to everyday experience. More things are roughly an inch, a foot, a cup, a pound than the corresponding metric units. It loses out fast though once you start calculating with it, so metric is the better choice for anything beyond basic use.
Pretty sure the only reason the US hasn't switched to metric is because the conversion will be ridiculously expensive.
Imperial is nice too.
In a boxing match you can't really imagine the guy saying "IN THIS CORNER, WEIGHING IN AT 80 KILOGRAMS"
it doesn't sound right..
same with kilometres per hour...

I can. That way I would actually know how big the guy is.

'It sounds better' is NOT an acceptable, or even half-way decent argument.

How about, yes it is.
People saying their weight in Stones is socially excepted, also babies being weighed in pounds is accepted.
Why should everything be Metric because it is "perfect".
Quarter Pounder With Cheese.
Royale With Cheese.
Metric
I want to get a job welding but I suck at the imperial system
FUCK THE IMPERIAL SYSTEM, it makes utterly no sense in modern times, it is literally useless.

I disagree with the kph thing. It makes it sound like the subject is SO FAST they had to get scientists to measure it.

That's why! Because it's perfect. Because unit conversions are simple and easy. Because the numbers aren't retardedly arbitrary and are a lot of the time are actually based off of useful, everyday occurrences. I mean what the fuck kind of temperature is 212 degrees for the boiling point of water (and 32 for melting point)?!
0 Celsius and 100 Celsius make so much more sense.
Is this going to turn into an "all Americans are retarded" thread?

Uhm, normally babies here are being weighed in gramms, for example "He was 3510 gramms".
I prefer imperial because that's what I grew up with. If you forced me to use metric, I'd still use imperial because that's the one I'm used to.
But I agree that metric makes more sense, what with powers of 10.

Well yeah, I didn't talk about temperature.
Stones and Pounds and Miles are good quantities that will live forever.
Fahrenheit, Yards and Ounces can die.
Feet is also socially acceptable so no..
6 foot tall is more acceptable in conversation than 1.9 metres tall. Think about it.

For you it is. If you said somebody in Europe that you are 6 foot tall, they'd have no idea how tall you really are.
