On Aug. 17, Jess Jones waited on a table eight diners at D’Jais Bar & Grill, a restaurant and dance venue in Belmar. Though Jones says she told the large party the kitchen was running slower than usual, at the end of the meal she received a surprising note on the receipt, reports USA Today.
Some asshole patrons right there. Not her fault the food took a while.
Slow news day, huh?
Is this really a necessary news article? At what point do we start shaming people for giving a low tip? Why not point this righteous furry at the restaurants for not paying the servers enough.
This is surely news
aaaaaand the world moved on
Fox News is reporting this?!
When will people realize that 95% of the time when your food is late, ITS THE COOK'S FAULT. The other 5% is where we're too busy and must've forgotten. I'd probably leave in a really big huff if that were me. Actually happened to our Bartender on Saturday, he had a $102.82 tab, with him making drinks over and over again for these people. Had I known, I'd have stepped in and served so I could get a tip and share, but.. Nothing. Nada. Not a cent. Literally put 0 on the Tip line. Worst part is? The customer was good friends with our veteran server... So, it didn't make sense and it pissed us both off. Even though I didn't serve them.
whats great about this is in her facebook post she complains about only receiving pay of $2.50/ an hour and that some of her paychecks are less than pocket change, but the federal government forces your employer to make up the difference if you dont make minimum wage from tips. what a shitty way to spread misinformation, but i guess anything to help support your position right?

People that do what these customers did are pricks and need to be called out on it.
If you ordered over $100 worth of food, it might take a while to cook.

None. Mine don't. If I walk out with $10 in tips and get a $50 paycheck... I just have to have $60 last me the week.
Jones wrote that, as a server in New Jersey, she earns $2.50 an hour—according to Department of Labor statistics, the minimum wages for tipped employees can legally be as low at $2.13 an hour.
Fucking disgusting. Over here even the mentally handicapped earn more than that - and they get the most mind-numbingly boring, repetitive jobs (cause for them that's actually fun).

Bartenders are probably the service employees I tip the most, because ya know, they give me my alcohol.

I never made below minimum wage as a waiter and I worked in a relatively slow restaurant in an area that doesn't have the best tippers. Life is easier if you spend less of it complaining
tips are stupid, outdated idea that needs to die how about pay your employees and living wage instead

So? My friend wrote "fuck you" on a tip. That's probably worse

I work at a Bowling Alley as a server. I DO make $5/hr but that's because its a bowling alley; not everyone will order something. Our menu is small, so I don't write things down because then I write so fast I can't read my own hand writing and fuck up. I get called out on it all the time from customers, but when I come back with exactly how they wanted it, they're pretty impressed and I may get a bigger tip. Servers are funky.
tips are stupid, outdated idea that needs to die how about pay your employees and living wage instead
I'm pretty sure the concept of paying your employees enough that they can live on it is a concept that's been dying for several years now
If you ordered over $100 worth of food, it might take a while to cook.
Not really. [editline]25th August 2015[/editline]
Fucking disgusting. Over here even the mentally handicapped earn more than that - and they get the most mind-numbingly boring, repetitive jobs (cause for them that's actually fun).
$2.50 is a normal wage for people who work for tips.
tips are stupid, outdated idea that needs to die how about pay your employees and living wage instead
They still get paid, it is just at a different rate and the employer is required to make up any shortage that does not put the employee over minimum wage.
what restaurant doesn't do automatic 15% gratuity on that size party usually it kicks in at party of 8
tips are stupid, outdated idea that needs to die how about pay your employees and living wage instead
To a lot of people its traditional and customary. For someone who is basically your slave for your entire stay, doing a lot more leg work than anyone else in the building, some people just feel its right to I guess.. Sort of.. "Compensate for the trouble" is how I see tipping to be. And if I made a minimum wage, PLUS tips, I'd be making a lot more money than anyone there and it should be "equal" right? That's why they can't pay minimum.
tips are stupid, outdated idea that needs to die how about pay your employees and living wage instead
Honestly agree with this, but then again it could just be because in the UK tipping is virtually non-existent. Its not a required thing like it appears to be in the US because they actually get paid at least a livable minimal wage (which one person could happily live off, gets questionable when its two or more). Only times I've ever tipped was at a nice restaurant where we ordered a large meal, and even then the tips don't go to the individual servers, they go into a massive pot that the place has and they then distribute them over everyone and save about half of it for emergency needs (like water damage, place got flooded a few years back and the tip pot actually saved them from most of the work that the insurance wouldn't pay out on). Also ignore flagdog, I'm from the UK if this makes the post make more sense.

Usually parties over 6 are subject to a mandatory gratuity here. Also when I went to the US I had no idea why they gave me 2 copies of the receipt to write the tip in, I thought they were trying to scam me by writing a higher amount on it. I then learned the other copy is meant to be for your records. Swipe and sign is terrible, thanks to Chip and Pin, I just enter my tip percentage on the machine and it automatically adds it on. That's why I had no idea how a receipt at a swipe and sign restaurant worked, because nobody uses swipe and sign here anymore.

Its so rare to find a US card with a chip on it even though they are trying to introduce chip and pin. Hell if you come to europe some of the cards we issue don't even have a magnetic strip anymore.
