US prosecutors have added wire fraud and additional criminal copyright infringement counts to their case against file-sharing site Megaupload.
New details have emerged as officials filed a 90-page superceding indictment against the company and its founder Kim Dotcom.
The site is accused of costing copyright holders more than $500m (£320m) in lost revenue.
The company says it was diligent in responding to pirated material.
In the indictment, the Department of Justice alleges that Megaupload organised the company's computer system's architecture around the "rapid and repeated distribution" of copyrighted works.
The company allegedly reproduced materials from other websites, including YouTube, and made them available on Megaupload.
User 'VV'
The new wire fraud charges are based on communications from the company to copyright holders.
In those emails, defendants falsely represented that infringing content had been removed when it had not been removed, Justice Department officials say.
The document also highlights one account holder that uploaded 16,950 files to sites the company owned, generating more than 34 million page views over the course of six years.
User "VV" was subject to numerous requests for removal, but records show no deletions of any of VV's uploaded files.
Megaupload paid user VV $3,400 through its rewards programme over the course of two years.
The indictment also contends that the site did not have have as many registered users as they claimed, and that of the 66 million registered accounts, only 5.4 million had ever uploaded a file to the service.
The Department of Justice has also added various properties, jet skis and jewellery to the list of assets subject to forfeiture.
Earlier this month, Mr Dotcom was denied bail in New Zealand.
He has denied the charges and has said he would fight an extradition application by the US.[/release]

They literally want to bury the founder in charges at this rate.
I'm really supriced it's just $500m you'd think it would be more, like in billions atleast with the way copyright cases are done nowadays.
Throwing the book at him. Megaupload was such a great site though
Fuck off US, and stop letting Hollywood ram you up the arse. Megaupload didn't take shit in revenue from you.
I'd say "Only in America will piracy result in consequences arguably worse than death" but they did some bad shit.
Of course, the reason they got taken down was probably because they were the biggest US-based host of illegal files, so...

Add in murder aswell since you want to bury him. They can probably cook one up aswell.

They still did plenty of illegal crap, you know.
You do all realise this goes beyond piracy right. It appears they were running a criminal network with a filesharing site as a front. If that is the case they deserve everything they get.

No, it wasn't, it was a genuinely terrible file host, it had no redeeming factors other than the metric fucktonne of warez on it, because like fuck the majority of users actually used it for legitimate purposes once they realised warez was never take down.

And this, we have to repeat this every fucking thread. The site was taken as evidence for various breaches of the DMCA, and to tie it in with his other misdeeds.
This guy completely deserves what he gets. The people I feel sorry for are the few that got charged with "downloading" a few mp3's years ago. $150,000 per song is just absurd and stupid, but noooo lets all feel sorry for the guy who knowingly made himself a millionaire by committing crimes.
How many years is he getting?
They're making an example of them. Or trying to at least. Nobody's really all that scared as they are appalled.
They really sure did change the world!

Trust me, murder tends to be less important than lost pocket change (if it was even called "lost") in America.

Go read the indictment against him, its not just about file sharing.

I wouldn't say that considering the U.S still enforces the death penalty in a good many states.
