Just yesterday, dozens of LGBT activist were arrested across Russia for staging pro-gay protest. While in jail, one activist tweeted that Russian police have beaten them and threatened them with sexual assault. Looks like the IOC ain't got a problem with that!
The International Olympic Committee has said Russia was acting in accordance with its laws when police detained 14 protesters in Moscow and St Petersburg on the day of the Olympic opening ceremonies. Some of those held in Moscow report being beaten while in police custody. “We understand that the protesters were quickly released,” Emmanuelle Moreau, the IOC’s head of media relations, said in an email to BuzzFeed. “As in many countries in the world, in Russia, you need permission before staging a protest. We understand this was the reason that they were temporarily detained.” The speed of the police response in both cases made organizers believe police may have been tapping their phones to monitor their movements. Russian police arrested at least 61 protestors nationwide on Friday — some protesting for causes other than LGBT rights — according to a count by the New York Times.
IOC is probably more corrupt than Russia. As long as they're getting money, they'll turn a blind eye to anything and everything.
So why, exactly, do we keep giving these fuckwads billions of dollars every two years by watching/attending the Olympics? They don't stand behind any of their ideals anymore. They don't deserve the viewership.

Because. Corporations make a lot of money off of it.
the Olympics are about the athletes. it was never about politics and should NEVER be about politics. all this shit does is take away from people who practically trained their entire lives and probably will only have 1 or 2 shots at gold. seriously, 16 days and then everyone can stir up as much shit as they want.

They didn't care when Nazi Germany hosted the Olympic Games which was pretty much at the start to their hateful Jewish movement
[editline]9th February 2014[/editline]
During the Munich Massacre, the IOC didn't stop any of the organized Olympic Events despite harsh backlash, only later on they suspended it because people were so furious with them

The IOC have always been assholes
Don't understand how Russia won for hosting it. It should only be held at places that support basic human rights. Beating and sexual assault? Can't wait for Saudi Arabia 2020.
what the fuck can we do except protest. they will get their money even if they start beating people themselves.
This isn't about politics anymore, this is about a country being cartoonishly evil. if those athletes think their shots at winning a prize is worth funding a shit government that shoves peoples well being and basic rights under a bus then they don't even deserve medals made of compacted horseshit.
The truth is though, that from a legal standpoint, to an extent even a moral standpoint what russians did right now is alright.
They didnt get arrested for being LBGT, they got arrested for doing a protest without notifying about it ahead of time.

then beaten and threatened with rape
Hitler didn't even arrest Jesse Owens. I'm sorry if you're a Russian citizen and you're going day-by-day just fine and think your country's okay and all, but The Olympics (should be) an event celebrating humanity not the abuse of it and yeah Russia isn't the worst host for it but it's definitely scraping the bottom of the barrel.

AT LEAST THE OPENING CEREMONY WAS BETTER THAN LONDON
well the olympics can get fucked as far as i'm concerned from now on
This is why I'm not watching this year.

Oh come on, I don't think the US is being Cartoonishly evil. That's a little excessive.

I'm not watching because the winter Olympics are pretty damn boring. The ski jump is okay I guess.
To think that there are people who actually support abuse like this, how much of a piece of shit do you need to be?
Russia has a massive boner for being evil as fuck.

I never saw anyone complain about North Korea participating in the olympics before, and what they do to their people is significantly worse than what Russia is doing to these activists.

The athletes don't get a choice in where the Olympic games are held.
Someone who spends their entire life and career training for something such as this shouldn't be expected to just lay down all efforts and give up over the political situation in a country that is frankly, of no concern or responsibility to the athlete.

"Their lives are more important than your lives". Yeah fucking brilliant. Fuck athletes for valuing their really hard work, their dedication, their lives basically. Fuck them for not doing something that would change absolutely fuck all and only make all their efforts wasted for fucking nothing. I agree with you that my government is being shitbags, but you are a colossal dick for shitting on athletes.

That's very naive.
Russia won't stop even if the Olympics backed away.
General reply: I support the athletes, but i'll be damned if I'm gonna watch this year and give money to Russia that will likely be used to further their anti-LGBT agenda. To me, human rights for the country at large are more important than some athlete's life's work, plain and simple. The only thing I can do is choose not to watch and provide that income.

I was talking about boykotting the Olympics to my friends and most of them drew the "poor athletes" argument.

They aren't training for Olympia alone and who says that the few athletes are worth fucking over thousands of other people by arguing with the stupid "but the athletes" argument and then there's also the locals who got fucked and the workers who got fucked some more just so we can watch other humans in hhightech suits and skis fly down a ramps while sitting on our couches.

Remember. Nazi Germany hosted the Olympics twice in 1936.
