Portions of the settlement released Friday do not specify how much money Martin's family will receive, but according to the Sentinel, the figure is believed to be in excess of $1 million. The settlement does, however, state that Zimmerman is not part of the agreement. Lawyers for Martin's family have made it clear that they still plan to file a civil claim against Zimmerman at a later point.
They just got a million dollars but still plan on filing a civil suit. Yea...

They got a settlement from the homeowners' association that operated the neighbourhood watch program, they're probably waiting to see what happens with Zimmerman himself in the trial before suing him

The justice of the case aside, what's a million bucks good for today? Five tanks of gas?
Okay, I joke. But let's not be too quick to cast judgement on a family whose teenager was shot dead.
As for their lawyers? With all the media attention that got, every greedy vulture for miles would've been circling. They'll push for every penny, if there's even the slightest chance a settlement is possible. And lawyers, alas, can be very convincing. They've had practice.
i hope if i get killed my family is able to exploit my death to make millions

Yeah, that's not even accounting the MASSIVE amount of money they've made through fucking merchandise such as T shirts and other clothing, bumper stickers, etc.
They're only trying to $end a me$$age $aying murder i$ not okay.

I may be ill-informed, but I don't think they're the ones making the money - The schemes certainly aren't theirs.
It's too bad no amount of money can bring someone back

not yet

Don't worry, we just need to donate $500,000,000,000 to their kickstarter so that they can create the technology to bring the dead back to life
This is not a money grab, this is trying to find some sort of sense of justice for whatever happened. They are trying to fill an infinite void in their lives with a pile of money, and it will never work.

But a million dollars will help redecorate our house and pay for the new sports car. RIP my child, my sweet prince forever in our hearts.

Pretty idiotic.

Not at all what I was trying to say.

It's hardly the family's fault, they probably just got told by their lawyers that they could file for a huge amount of money and probably get it, since this is such a high profile case. It's more a problem with the system; the only way it knows how to help people experiencing grief, pain and loss is to just throw money at them.

It's a very sad situation I understand, they've lost someone. But suing the homeowners association is going to fix this? In fact that may actually ruin more lives, there may be loss of jobs now due to the missing 1,000,000 Dollars. Just because the lawyer "told me to do it" doesn't make it right.
Loss of jobs due to this? Explain how that works Endoftheworld.
By that logic we should ban the lottery and rich people.

Someone had to pay that money, if it was a company, they may not be able to afford to keep their employees or worse, close down completely.

This is how America works.
What would you choose, a million+ dollars or knowing that somebody has kept their job?

Let me paint a picture for you. Grieving family, nation-wide media attention. Every lawyer around wants to take their case, and these lawyers are hungry.
So some slick guy approaches the family and says "I can make the people responsible pay for what happened to your son."
Bam, family's on board. If the lawyer suggests they should sue someone else and they're reluctant, all he's got to say is "Are you really just going to let them get away with what they did? Do you want it to happen to someone else?"
Lawyers gotta eat too, but it's not exactly complicated or difficult to use the family's guilt and grief to make them agree to starting almost any ridiculous lawsuit.

Then why even try with millions of dollars

punitive damages are necessary to encourage change in operating practices by private organizations
the fact that zimmerman was not explicitly trained to avoid tailing martin is a huge problem and a liability for the housing association, you can be damn sure that housing associations across florida are going to amend policies and training procedures to make sure something like this doesn't happen again
