Lord Howell of Guildford argued there was "plenty of room" for developments and less concern than was the case over "beautiful natural areas".
But the Archbishop of Canterbury disagreed, calling the North East "beautiful, rugged, welcoming".
Downing Street said Lord Howell did not speak for the government.
Fracking - short for "hydraulic fracturing" - involves drilling deep under ground and releasing a high-pressure mix of water, sand and hundreds of chemicals to crack rocks and release gas stored inside.
Water companies are worried the process could contaminate drinking water aquifers that lie above shale gas reserves. But supporters of fracking say it is safe and essential to making the UK more energy self-sufficient.
Widespread fracking has not started in the UK yet, but Cuadrilla began exploratory drilling in Lancashire in 2011 and many other possible sites have been identified.
yeah
um
no
His brain is a desolate area.
These 'desolate' areas are called farmland, national parks and beautiful landscapes. Nah mate, we're alright
Shit Guildford has a fucking lord? Thats one of my local towns.
-nevermind didn't read-
Hi guys I speak bullshit allow me to translate:
Fracking should be carried out in the North East of England, where there's a large amount of money for me to get my grubby shitstained hands on while not caring about future generations or the planet.
Cant we fucking dig somewhere desolate then just tunnel sideways?
It should be done so we can get energy independence. He seems to mistake rugged beauty for wasteland, probably doesn't get out enough.
Fracking is just bad. We act like we're going to be better off because we use natural gas than coal or oil, but I believe studies say it's as bad as those if not worse due to the methane released in it's production.

Fracking isn't sustainable and can have lots of knock-on affects on the environment.
Its already been proven to destroy the groundwater and kill forests . You can't be serious.
Ahah. Ahahahahaha.
No. For the love of god, no.
I really hope there is a major breakthrough in energy sources such as fusion, otherwise we're fucked.

There really isn't an impending energy crisis anymore, it's just oil and elec companies who want to overcharge you
Thorium, among other things, is ready to step into play

This is something I'd rather see done if we ever entered another world war, just quickly fuck up the environment before the nukes even have a chance why not.

Why aren't these things already in play?
Tory peer Lord Howell has apologised for saying fracking should take place in the north east of England because it was "desolate". His comments caused a huge stir on Twitter, as users sprang to the area's defence with photographs like this one of Low Newton

In his original statement, former energy secretary Lord Howell said fracking caused less concern in the North East than in "beautiful natural areas". Richard Scrimshaw's response was this picture of Beadnell beach in Northumberland.

The River Wansbeck also made an appearance, courtesy of Andrew Hall. The Archbishop of Canterbury and former Bishop of Durham, the Most Reverend Justin Welby, said on Twitter: "North east England very beautiful, rugged, welcoming, inspiring, historic, advancing, not 'desolate'."

Why aren't these things already in play?
Because Uranium based power plants produce plutonium as waste which you can use for production of nukes.
Thorium waste isn't really weaponizeable.
It's as simple as that.
Why aren't these things already in play?
Yes, what Awesomecaek said, and the fact that Governments want to keep energy prices high (though not too high so that people can't buy it) but they couldn't do that if people didn't think we were in an energy crisis
Funny that these Desolate Area's are the area's that consistently never vote for Conservative's.
Lord Howell can go fuck himself.
C'mon humans.
Get your shit together already.
Well, at least I learned a new word. I always thought "Fracking" was just a Battlestar nerd euphemism for knockin' boots, which made his statement seem considerably more awkward.
E's right you know.
Northerners technically aren't human. I train them to catch frisbees for me at the park. More loyal than dogs I reckon.

We ought to replace dogs wit em. Bring em down ere so we can get them out of that awful north.

it really upsets me that you've replaced one euphemism there for an even more obscure one and I really don't know why
I blush and start giggling when people say the word "sex."
The protesters in Sussex are so stupid. They're drilling there, not fracking.
It's about time we caught up with the US on this anyway. Still rather develop something new though.

Americans
<3
If they frack, say goodbye to the environment, clean air, and clean drinking water as well.
It's 100% garuntee'd to screw up the ecosystem as a whole.
You should watch the Gasland Documentary's
