I have no idea how this happened, but as I was leaving the store today my shifter began acting up. It would shift from P to R to N fine, but after that the shifter just moved freely (not fell, it just didn't encounter anymore gear changing spots). In order to get it to shift in to drive, I have to slam it down moderately hard (doing it slowly will not make it shift) all the way to the bottom of the shift, where 1st gear would normally be.
It's an automatic '86 Monte Carlo.
If this didn't happen just now (5:45 PM) I would've taken it straight to a shop, but they're all closed, so can anyone give me an idea of what's going on here?
You might have a much bigger issue than just your column shifter...
Either it could be your shift tube is broken or your transmission cables are busted......Or your gear synchronizes are fucked.,
I have no idea what any of those three things are.

Time to call a mechanic then.
It's the weekend. They're all closed until Monday.

Call for a cab, ride a bus, or a train or something.

if you car is showing signs of an obviously blatant issue that disables you from using a major function of the car, but you aren't mechanically inclined, the most definitely take it to a mechanic. Because either way you aren't fixing it, so you won't be driving for the weekend. Good luck on the fix at the start of the week, hopefully its not too expensive. I love the old Monte's. I have a Caprice myself, same engine and such.

don't forget about airlines. :downs:
It is one of those things that even if you aren't mechanically inclined it is helpful to be able to tell the mechanic what is wrong or at least the closest idea you have to it and then try to learn as much about it as you can. My brothers shifter in his old bronco 2 kept wiggling loose of the base and we finally realized it was due to the heavy shifter we added onto it. He figured out how to take it apart and fix it and put it back together.
OK, got it to the mechanic today and it turns out that the thing that goes from my shifter to my transmission had a loose bolt at the transmission end.
He showed me where it was and there is no way I would've been able to get to it myself.
$65 labor later my car is working again!
not too bad for the price.
Hard to believe the trouble caused by a single loose bolt.
