• 3 men jailed for separate sex assaults of underage girl on OKCupid, victim continues to use OKCupid
A trio of Lancaster County men recently stood before a local judge and admitted to sexual abuse of a 12-year-old girl they met in an online chatroom. In turn, President Judge Dennis Reinaker ordered these men to serve one to two years in prison, followed by five years of probation. Each man told Reinaker they met the girl through OKCupid, an online dating website. Each claimed they believed the girl was over 18. She was, in fact, 12 at the start of the contact, police reported. The three men sexually abused the girl, in separate incidents, during a month-long span last summer. ..... "The facts of these cases, on their face, make it easy for the defense attorneys to blame the victim," Mansfield said. "However, the child in these cases is (now) only thirteen and it is the responsibility of the adults to refrain from the behaviors that occurred here." Cory Miller, Jarvis' lawyer, said the victim continued to use the website even after the men were charged. "The victim in this case continues to do this," Miller told the judge. Jarvis was the first man charged in the case, according to testimony. He gave police information about the victim's online profile, which led them to her online, according to Miller. Local Children & Youth services, along with District Attorney Craig Stedman's office, intervened and provided help to the girl and her family, according to Mansfield. It is believed her activity on the site stopped then. How do you believe someone is eighteen when they are twelve?
How do you believe someone is eighteen when they are twelve?
You don't. You lie and say you did to (poorly) try and cover your pedo ass.
How do you believe someone is eighteen when they are twelve?
It's entirely possible thet never met her in person
How do you believe someone is eighteen when they are twelve?
In an online chatroom anyone can pretend to be any age. I for example am 7. What is this?
It would be helpful to know in what way they consider this sexual assault. The article doesn't say how they got caught. Was it in person or not?
You don't. You lie and say you did to (poorly) try and cover your pedo ass.
Do you ask to see the ID of your potential sexual partners? Like, genuinely? I've never asked to see the license of someone I've had sex with, and that even seems like an unreasonable request for anyone to make. It's pretty clear they did not go out, or plan to become pedophiles. After all, they used OKcupid, and none of them conspired or colluded with one another. Perhaps there was a point where, after meeting, it was 'suspicious' and they may have known better but at the same time? To me, it seems unreasonable to put this massive punishment on them when the so-called "abused" (which is itself loaded language, since she's voluntarily undertaking the task, multiple times, over a fairly sizable period of time) hasn't really been "abused."
Why are they referring to OkCupid as an "online chatroom" Is this 1998
In an online chatroom anyone can pretend to be any age. I for example am 7. What is this?
In chat you can't commit sexual assault.
What exact sexual abuse was it? Have they physically met or was it sexual abuse in form of something that went on online or what? If they physically met I find it hard to believe they confused a 12 year old for an 18 year old.
In chat you can't commit sexual assault.
Sexual Abuse could be kissing her. It'd be statutory rape if they had sex. Gonna suck having to live far away from schools and report in with the police for the rest of your life for it.
In chat you can't commit sexual assault.
In quite a few countries it would be considered grooming a child for sex

Did the girl lie about her age? If so she should be the one being punished here. In fact, the article says she was 12. They should have struck OKCupid with a COPPA lawsuit instead, because 12 is under 13.
i'm pretty sure you can tell the difference pretty easily in person between a 12 and 18 year old
I wouldn't say it's always that easy. Girls go through puberty far earlier than boys and there are a lot of 18 year-old girls who look really young for their age. Sure, you could assume it was a bit fishy if she looked a bit younger in person, but not everyone automatically assumes their date is a pathological liar. I swear, if things continue in the direction they've been moving in, men are going to be carrying around paperwork for their dates to sign verifying their age and having them sign for consent before and after sex. They should have struck OKCupid with a COPPA lawsuit instead, because 12 is under 13.
The girl clearly lied about her age when registering (and I'm not sure of how OKCupid would be at fault for that) and put that she was 18 years old. I mean really, what kid hasn't lied about their age to sign up for a website? I did that kind of stuff back on places like Neopets, CokeMusic, and Habbo Hotel back when I was 10. Of course, doing it on a dating website to intentionally hook up with men is another thing entirely.
Because lying about your age is so hard right?
Exactly. And it got three guys jailed and presumably ankle strapped ("They must notify police of their whereabouts, under Megan's Law, for the rest of their lives."). That's an issue. OKCupid has a clause in their ToS that Coment pointed out that the site is explicitly meant for those over the age of 18 only. [editline]27th July 2015[/editline] Hell why don't we just do a mass jailing and encourage kids to sign up on dating sites and lie about their age to get lots of people who assume kids are automatically shut out jailed instantly with no repercussions for those kids?
Is this the thread where we blame twelve year old girls for being victims?
Is this the thread where we blame twelve year old girls for being victims?
A 12 year-old girl intentionally lied about her age to register on a dating site *for adults* and proceeded to meet up with not one, but three different men at different times. After these men were charged with sexual assault, she went straight back to using OKCupid until authorities stepped in and stopped her. How exactly is she a perfectly innocent victim in this case? She clearly knew it was wrong, especially after the court sentence, yet still went back for more. There comes a point in your life that you have to take a tiny bit of responsibility for your actions, especially if those actions are illegal and cause harm to yourself and others. I could understand if these guys were typical predators that were looking for younger girls on an online game or something, but they were using OKCupid which requires all users to be 18 years old. Clearly, they weren't using it with the intention of hooking up with local 12 year olds.
Why are they referring to OkCupid as an "online chatroom"
Because in the media, "online chatroom" means "hidden place where evil and creepy men prey on young women and plan terrorist activities".
Is this the thread where we blame twelve year old girls for being victims?
youth = innocence is a pretty trash fallacy
Guys were probably aware but playing oblivious, 12 year old girl has mad mental problems.

You're gonna have to provide a pretty compelling argument that she fully understood her situation. She obviously had problems which is why she received help from child services to keep her off the internet. It's interesting 'cause in threads like these the barely pubescent girls are somehow temptresses who ensnare innocent men when these guys are pretty obviously guilty of blatant abuse, esp. if they think a 12 year old resembles an 18 year old.
The three men sexually abused the girl, in separate incidents, during a month-long span last summer.
This is adult manipulation of childish naivete and you're kind of a disgusting scumbag to suggest otherwise.

Are you living on Earth?

What "sexual abuse" amounts to isn't clear however, as the men weren't charged with rape and were only sentenced to 1-2 years in prison. Unfortunately, without further details (which I can't seem to find anywhere), this could mean practically anything, though it likely wasn't very severe given the light sentences.
Because all 12 year old girls are innocent angels and can be at no fault. Are you living on Earth?
A 12 year old girl with obvious issues was in over her head on a dating website and three adults who should know better exploited her immaturity. Yet all I see being discussed is the girl's responsibility and not the fact that three grown men are scumbags who fuck with underage girls, and I'm the one not living on Earth?
The girl obviously lied about her age. You can't make an account on Okcupid unless you are 18. I've used it in the past and had several people lie to me about there age. Its more common than people realize. The kids that get on there are stupid as fuck too. They don't realize all the creeps that get on those sites. Even people my age "23," can be creeps.

But 3 in a row? Seems suspicious. And then she still continued. The information presented is so vague it could go either way. Hell, we don't even know what they classify as sexual assault/abuse in this context.
