I'm finally sick of using XP and have decided to upgrade to Windows 7. Unfortunately, I really don't know what this entails. Will I be able to upgrade directly from Xp to 7? Do I have to back up everything on my hard drive? Etc.

You can upgrade directly to Windows 7 and if you choose not to format all your old files will be put in a folder called windows.old where you can copy them over to your new installation.
I would go with a format on install based on the features of NTFS added in Vista and 7. I don't have it though so it's just hear-say.
You should put all of your important files on a external hard drvie and format when it installs so allof that crap from XP nolonger exists on the HDD. Remember to double-check the files before you format.

That's a fresh install.
