Genesis are an English rock band that formed in 1967. The band currently comprises the longest-tenured members Phil Collins (lead vocals and drums), Mike Rutherford (guitar and bass guitar), and Tony Banks (keyboards). Peter Gabriel, Anthony Phillips and Steve Hackett also played major roles in the band in its early years. Genesis are among the top 30 highest-selling recording artists of all time with approximately 150 million albums sold worldwide.
Genesis began as a 1960s pop band. During the 1970s, they evolved into a progressive rock band, incorporating complex song structures and elaborate instrumentation, while their concerts became theatrical experiences with innovative stage design, pyrotechnics, elaborate costumes and on-stage stories. This second phase was characterised by lengthy performances such as the 23 minute "Supper's Ready" and the 1974 concept album, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. In the 1980s, the band produced accessible pop music based on melodic hooks; this change of direction gave them their first number one album in the United Kingdom, Duke, and their only number one single in the United States, "Invisible Touch".
The members of Genesis are as follows:

Since the band changed so much over the years, it's hard to recommend a starting point for their music. If you're after the prog, go for Selling England By The Pound. If you're into the pop, check out Invisible Touch.
Either way, here's all the band's albums:

Favorite band right here. And holy shit is that Peter Gabriel? when was that taken?
I also see you left out "I can't dance" "invisible touch" and "Thats all" your not a fan of "new" Genesis?
No "Watcher of the Skies"? Awwwwww, it's :krad2:
Thank you for making this threaaaad.
I grew up listening to these guys, I bloody love them. I often get into arguments with my friends after mentioning that I preferred the Collins era. :v: Peter Gabriel's damn awesome too, though.
Supper's Ready still blows my mind.

It was from the Foxtrot tour ("A flower?")
And I do listen to the Collins era, moreso than the Gabriel era in fact, but I was trying to make an overview of their career and the songs I posted are what I consider to be the best tracks of their respective albums.

But you skipped Foxtrot! And Trespass, The Knife is awesome, though its very strange for Genesis, really heavy for them. Still good though.
Land of Confusion <3
I kinda liked calling all stations, even though it was their least popular album.
My favourite Genesis tune will always be "The Cage". Prog heaven!

Also OP, you forgot Chester Thompson on drums(when Collins sings live).

I gave it a listen, and it's alright. Definitely underrated.
Gotta admit
I love Calling all stations.
It is a great song.
Favourite album?
Mine is Selling England, closely followed by The Lamb and then Duke.
I didn't come in here just to be snobby and say I prefer the Gabriel era but...well actually, I did.
[editline]18th December 2010[/editline]
I also think that OP's picture of Ant Phillips is actually Mike Rutherford.

You might also be interested in a couple of facts about Genesis.
- Peter Gabriel was the first recorded person to stage dive.
- Steve Hackett was the first recorded person to 'finger tap' his guitar. Hear the solo in The Musical Box.
It isn't Mike, but they do look remarkably similar:

Christ they do!

Invisible Touch followed by We can't dance. Grew up to that soundtrack still listen to it today.

Foxtrot, then Lamb, then Selling England, then maybe Duke.
I love Genesis with Peter Gabriel, but frankly nothing after Lamb really does it for me
I love Genesis with Peter Gabriel, but frankly nothing after Lamb really does it for me
Yeah, after he left they kind of dialled down the crazy which was sad. But Mr Collins did try and his drumming was still able to lift the band to better places.
I've been watching the interviews about the albums they made that are up on youtube. They seriously made, half an hour interviews with the entire band on EACH album... no band does that.
The Lamb interviews really make me feel something eerie about the making of that album. The music is a lot different to their state of mind back then. It makes you think a bit.

I've watched those as well
Seems like Peter Gabriel is the only one who thought the Lamb was actually a swell album, which made me laugh a bit. He's got a bit of a huge ego and I'm not sure I like him that much. Tony Banks is the best in those interviews - definitely the driving force behind the band in my opinion.
I only have Nursery Cryme on CD unfortunately, but I've listened to their discog - Genesis CDs are seriously expensive in Australia, I'm talking $40 at my local store for a normal CD copy of We Can't Dance.
Also imo their best pop album was definitely not Invisible Touch, it was the self-titled one. That's a fucking stellar album, really dark but still catchy. Also Collins era was still great for their prog as well, I don't get why people just dismiss it. Blood on the Rooftops, One for the Vine - Wind and Wuthering was a great album too.
Probably my favourite prog band though. Favourite album has to be Selling England, followed by Nursery Cryme/Wind And Wuthering, Foxtrot, then Genesis. I like Lamb but I think something was missing from it.

It's fair to say Tony Banks was the heart of the band. He pretty much was the rock that held the music together.

I agree with the Mama album being their best pop record, that thing is like a driving force of a record. Real gem on LP.
man I just fucking love genesis argh
What you people need is the Archive Box sets.
B-sides and live performances and demos. Some of the Bsides in their pop years are SO GOOD.

The first archive box set is pretty much the live stuff of the Peter era, some great things there too.
The remasters are really nice as well - I got the remastered edition of Nursery Cryme and it really shows just how solid an album it was whereas the original was hampered by pretty poor audio quality - Musical box is just perfect.
Also I think for me Genesis ties with Porcupine Tree in the "incredibly satisfying to go through each members solo work" at first place. Mike and the Mechanics, Steve Hackett, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins and even Tony Banks's stuff is fantastic. You can't go wrong with it.
I love Peter Gabriel's solo stuff but i don't think fantastic is something I'd personally apply to phil collins solo stuff.
Call me weird (i'll be flattered tbh) but Lamb is my second favourite Genesis album after Selling England by the Pound

Lamb Lies Down is probably the most intriguing out of the lot imo. There's a movie Gabriel was inspired by to make it, and I'm gonna see it.
As for Phil, yes he's not "brilliant" he's just a very good pop song writer. :v:
He didn't do anything as great as Melt or Us.
