A baby girl who was born with HIV has been cured after very early treatment with standard drug therapy, US researchers have said, in a potentially ground-breaking case that could offer insights on how to eradicate HIV infection in its youngest victims.

I thought people where only joking when they say this
I thought the cure for aids was $180,000 broken down into pure liquid then injected into the bloodstream?
I thought the cure for aids was $180,000 broken down into pure liquid then injected into the bloodstream?

I thought people where only joking when they say this
Tell that to the amish guy...
On the Facepunch Home page all I saw was "Baby born with HIV..." and I got all sad.
But then I saw the rest.
Glad we're doing some good progress with this disease.
Mississippi does it again!

The amish aren't against science, they're against being forced to rely on others.
Tell that to the Luddite...
Fixed.
I thought people where only joking when they say this
children are prevented from having treatments based on personal beliefs of the parents...

Why does this Baby remind me of Adam Jensen?
I thought there could never be a 'cure' for AIDs because they could never be sure if a few strains still existed here or there.
I thought there could never be a 'cure' for AIDs because they could never be sure if a few strains still existed here or there.
Careful. The child was cured of HIV, not AIDS
I thought there could never be a 'cure' for AIDs because they could never be sure if a few strains still existed here or there.
What does that mean. I don't understand the way you worded this.
Careful. The child was cured of HIV, not AIDS
HIV is the virus, AIDS is simply a term for low white blood cells.
Careful. The child was cured of HIV, not AIDS
You're the one who needs to be careful, AIDS is the one that is cureable, HIV is the virus, (human immunodeficiency VIRUS)

At the moment I'm sure it is just speculation, she will probably be tested for years to come to see if it is actually completely gone.
weee automerge
Wouldn't that be some shit if later in life she get's infected by Dennis Rodman?
Wouldn't that be some shit if later in life she get's infected by Dennis Rodman?
I don't think Dennis Rodman has HIV.
I need to show this to people who say science has gone too far.
who actually says that
HIV is the virus, AIDS is simply a term for low white blood cells.
And the child was cured of the former, not the latter - she couldn't have been "cured of AIDS" because she didn't have AIDS.
There is hope <3
Only for younger people born with HIV and as long as you treat it quickly.
"The treatment would not work in older children or adults because the virus will have already infected their CD4 cells."
"Prevention really is the best cure, and we already have proven strategies that can prevent 98% of newborn infections by identifying and treating HIV-positive women"
So they transferred the baby to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where she came under the care of Dr Hannah Gay
How ironic that Dr Gay cured a baby with HIV.
How ironic that Dr Gay cured a baby with HIV.
hurr all gays have HIV
plus, thats not even the definition of ironic. Irony would be a firetruck on fire. What you said is coincidental.
