http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2012/06/14/mac-malware-apple-marketing-message/
Up until just a few days ago, Apple's website was keen to point out that Mac OS X doesn't get PC viruses, and that the operating system "defends against viruses and other malicious applications, or malware" with "virtually no effort on your part". Now, Apple's changed its tune a little and revised the wording on its "Why you'll love a Mac" webpage: [t]http://sophosnews.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/mac-osx-before-after.jpg[/t] I think it's pretty interesting that Apple has made this change to their messaging. Clearly they've decided that pointing out the size of the Windows malware problem isn't going to look terribly convincing unless they are also open about that Mac malware also exists. After all, it was only a couple of months ago that it was found one particular piece of Mac malware had infected 600,000 Macs worldwide, including 274 in Cupertino. In short, people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. And there's no longer an emphasis on Apple customers having to "do nothing", to keep their Macs malware-free. Mac malware is a reality these days, with regular users finding their computers are becoming infected. The problem may not be as significant as Windows malware, but it exists.
What it said before was true. It doesn't get Windows virii. It does and can get ones designed for macs. Still funny though. However it is good they changed it, it made it sound like it was invincible before.
i remember when my gcse graphics teacher said to me "macs can't get viruses" my how i loathed that woman
Wow, I didn't realize they just outright fucking lied on their page. +1 reason to hate apple.
Wow, I didn't realize they just outright fucking lied on their page. +1 reason to hate apple.
But they didn't. They said Macs can't get Windows viruses. Which is true.
But they didn't. They said Macs can't get Windows viruses. Which is true.
They said it didn't because of "built in defenses", which isn't the reason at all. They also used the line "Safeguard your data. By doing nothing." which is also a lie.
You're shocked because a company made a slight lie while advertising its product? Man are you in for a surprise.
Didn't you hear? Apple is the only company that does this.
All Flashback did was hijack Google's sponsored links in search results and took you to some other page where the virus dudes would get the ad revenue. My Mac having friend said he wish he got that virus. Wrap it up Microsoft, Apple even has better viruses than Windows.
Yeah, saying "no viruses" is a sure-fire way to get someone to write a virus just to prove you wrong. Same with the phrase "hacker-proof." Fucking asking for trouble.
To say that the security of any OS is foolproof is merely asking for somebody to prove you wrong.
But they didn't. They said Macs can't get Windows viruses. Which is true.
This may sound silly but... Windows malware on Wine anybody? Not entirely sure of how possible that would be.
Windows can't get Mac viruses.
apples can't get windows
But they didn't. They said Macs can't get Windows viruses. Which is true.
Might as well put 'can't get the common cold or aids unlike humans'
Might as well put 'can't get the common cold or aids unlike humans'
I recall something about a women taking her computer completely apart only to begin cleaning every inch of it with a scrubber and cleaning fluid because she was told her computer had a virus.
apples can't get windows
I'm sorry, but [t]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/14742854/ShareX/2012-06/2012-06-27_01-20-58.png[/t]
Oh yeah? Well Windows doesn't get Mac Viruses. GG Apple.
Oh yeah? Well Windows doesn't get Mac Viruses. GG Apple.
It would be enjoyable if Microsoft put this on the Windows 8 or Windows 7 features page.
Safeguard your data by doing nothing, I always believed, was referring to the fact it was built off Unix. The thing is, Mac malware has always been there although it's been virtually non-existent: Back at OSX 10.1 (in 2001) there was something like 50 viruses available. There's considerably more now, but Macs have been overall harder to infect due to the precautions taken within the OS such as sandboxing. Shit's always going to get through though, because it's still a computer after all.
apples can't get windows
bootcamp.exe
Flashback was a trojan anyway. It wasn't even a true virus.
Flashback was a trojan anyway. It wasn't even a true virus.
No but it showed mac users who thought "lol macs cant get viruses, silly pc user" that macs are well capitale of getting viruses

But looking at the first image.. It says "It doesn't get PC viruses" .... And that stands true still today because Mac is a UNIX bassed system, and does not use the same arch. It may get Mac viruses, But not PC.
But looking at the first image.. It says "It doesn't get PC viruses" .... And that stands true still today because Mac is a UNIX bassed system, and does not use the same arch. It may get Mac viruses, But not PC.
PC is a computer architecture pioneered by IBM in the 80's, as opposed to some of the other architectures that floundered and failed in that era. It is used basically for every single home computer in the world. Including Macs. There is no such thing as a non-PC Mac. Get this through your head, please.
But they didn't. They said Macs can't get Windows viruses. Which is true.
Yeah and Windows can't get Mac viruses. The statement means nothing
But looking at the first image.. It says "It doesn't get PC viruses" .... And that stands true still today because Mac is a UNIX bassed system, and does not use the same arch. It may get Mac viruses, But not PC.
It's not just about the kernel, and even then Mac OS X does not use the UNIX kernel (fun fact, XNU is an Acronym for "X is not Unix"). And they should have had a site saying "Mac OS X doesn't run Windows programs" as well.
