Source:here
Microsoft has pulled instructions that previously offered Xbox One owners a way to update their console without connecting to the Internet. The company had previously listed a 20-step guide for downloading the latest Xbox One firmware to a USB stick and then using that to update the console, but the company has now pulled the instructions and the associated files. For the best experience, the Xbox One will require a day one update when it is first switched on. "The site was not an alternative way to take the Day One update and customers still need to connect to Xbox Live for the update," said a Microsoft spokesperson to GameSpot. Microsoft has previously said the new console will "do very little" without the update. Microsoft is now encouraging customers that might require an offline update to contact its customer support directly. "Because of the complexity of this customer support process we’ve actually removed the page and we will work with customers directly to make sure they have a smooth experience."
Updated thanks to TheJoker Source2:here
UPDATE: Microsoft has removed its instructions for updating Xbox One without connecting it to the internet. The company issued Eurogamer a statement contradicting its earlier claim that the site could be used to manually update an Xbox One's firmware. The files which users could download to do so have also been pulled. "The site was not an alternative way to take the Day One update and customers still need to connect to Xbox Live for the update," a spokesperson said. "Because of the complexity of this customer support process we've actually removed the page and we will work with customers directly to make sure they have a smooth experience." It may be that the process was simply too difficult to explain - and would probably only have been used by a small percentage of the console's new userbase. That said, anyone who runs into difficulties now may be forced to go through Microsoft support channels to get the files they need, rather than simply obtain them from Microsoft's server. "That file was never designed to replace the day one update," Microsoft exec Albert Penello explained via NeoGAF. "It's a recovery file in case something goes wrong. Instead of risking customers get themselves into a bad state by installing the file, we are going to troubleshoot on a case-by-case basis. It is not a replacement for the online update."
Ah, the good ol' bait and switch. Well played microsoft.
According to a couple of people... it was just a recovery file.
Ah, the good ol' bait and switch. Well played microsoft.
They're not returning always online or something they're just making you download an update by connecting through the xbox instead of on a usb stick or something.
Unless I'm reading wrong, they just pulled the instructions? Now instead of doing it yourself, you get to get put on hold for 45 minutes just to be redirected to another person to also wait on.
That's correct, they are either very optimistic about their servers being able to deal with ~1 million people downloading the day 1 patch or there's something going on they're not telling us. [editline]22nd November 2013[/editline]
Ah, the good ol' bait and switch. Xbone is becoming less appealing every day. I don't want to spend the best part of an hour on the phone when I could have probably followed the instructions without too much problem.

Xbox... 360?
For some reason When I try to edit the Op it's blank, so I copy and pasted the whole thing so this will either work or fail spectacularly
This blind MS hate is getting retarded. PS4 had a day 1 update as well. I didn't see you guys flipping shit over that.
This blind MS hate is getting retarded. PS4 had a day 1 update as well. I didn't see you guys flipping shit over that.
Bad reading x1
Bad reading x1
No, i read it. It requires an internet connection, just like PS4's update. Also, this update removes the 24-hour online checks that you guys cried about.
No, i read it. It requires an internet connection, just like PS4's update. Also, this update removes the 24-hour online checks that you guys cried about.
Except PS4's update didn't require a connection. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2427080,00.asp
This blind MS hate is getting retarded. PS4 had a day 1 update as well. I didn't see you guys flipping shit over that.
It isn't the fact that there was a day one update, it was that the update removed offline updating instructions in favor of live customer support.
No, i read it. It requires an internet connection, just like PS4's update. Also, this update removes the 24-hour online checks that you guys cried about.
Missed the point. It's about microsoft closing one of the avenues of acquiring the day 1 patch, basically you can't install the day 1 patch by yourself, you need to call MS customer support and ask them to help you. Also read the comments this has been explained.
Except PS4's update didn't require a connection. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2427080,00.asp
I stand corrected but why is this such a big deal. If you can download the update to your usb, then you should be able to connect your console to the internet and do it directly.
I stand corrected but why is this such a big deal. is microsoft even real. this could be satire of itself but it's actually fucking happening. [editline]yay[/editline] or maybe I was reading their previous announcement wrong?
I stand corrected but why is this such a big deal. If you can download the update to your usb, then you should be able to connect your console to the internet and do it directly.
The only situation I can think of is someone like me who has the internet on one side of their house and the xbox at the other end of the house might as well be on the moon as far as Wi-Fi is concerned :v: way easier to bring a usb key across the house than it is to bring the xbox downstairs and hook it up on one of the other tvs
That's correct, they are either very optimistic about their servers being able to deal with ~1 million people downloading the day 1 patch or there's something going on they're not telling us.
Microsoft has some of the largest datacenters in the world, and they're rolling out updates to over half a billion Windows users quite frequently. Sony's day one patch seemed to go fairly smooth, and they had almost twice the pre-orders of Microsoft. And I don't think the topic of the OP would've eased the situation by any measurable margin.
People were downloading the update so they didn't have to wait when they get the console, microsoft only wanted it to be used if there was problems installing the update. More things are bound to go wrong installing off a USB its a recovery option not an initial setup.
Sony's day one patch seemed to go fairly smooth, and they had almost twice the pre-orders of Microsoft.
I know you're making up numbers but, ps4 and xbox have very close preorder numbers in regions where they both launched. The only reason sony is higher is because they are launching in more regions at launch.
Good thing I've had internet since 2000
Good thing I've had internet since 2000
not the point at all.
This blind MS hate is getting retarded. PS4 had a day 1 update as well. I didn't see you guys flipping shit over that.
you could actually play your games and watch movies without the update though lol [editline]21st November 2013[/editline]
People were downloading the update so they didn't have to wait when they get the console, microsoft only wanted it to be used if there was problems installing the update.
That's correct, they are either very optimistic about their servers being able to deal with ~1 million people downloading the day 1 patch or there's something going on they're not telling us.
So lets just ignore the fact that MS has more bandwidth at their disposal than some first world countries for a moment here. They push out thousands of patches for their products every year to hundreds of millions of customers and pirates. They have relatively seamlessly pushed out massive overhaul updates for the xbox 360. On top of this they have direct digital downloads of most of their recent operating systems, service packs, and most of their software suites. In fact the direct downloads are so well hosted that when some russian script kiddie breaks into a VPS, it's standard operating procedure to try and download something from Microsoft's servers to test the box's connection because it is assumed that Microsoft's servers will saturate literally anything. And yet a day 1 patch for a console that hasn't even moved that many units yet is going to somehow bring their servers to their knees and cripple their infrastructure? Think about that for a minute.
not the point at all.
What is the point then? I understand that not everyone has access to internet, but according to the source this doesn't remove the option to install it through USB. It only removed the instructions so people would call tech support instead (which is stupid, but you can still google for instructions from another site so it doesn't really matter). If someone can afford an Xbox or PS4 and an HDTV (neither support SD without an adapter) what are the chances of them not being able to access internet at all? Of course, not having a day one update at all would be much better, but this is just an inconvenience, it's not a huge problem
xbox one launch is such an amazing trainwreck to watch :v:, it actually manages to be fascinating in a horrible/funny kind of way.
