Tesla shows off it's charger that automatically connects to car
Remember when Elon Musk said Tesla was working on a car charger "that automatically moves out from the wall and connects like a solid metal snake. For realz"? Maybe you do, maybe you don't. It doesn't really matter because now you can see a prototype in action, for realz — and on a "stuff of nightmares" scale of 1 to 10, it's about a 6.5.
To be clear, I'm not saying this isn't impressive — an automated system that can plug itself into a Model S is impressive. It's also, to be sure, very creepy — especially in the slow but deliberate way it twists itself to make a connection. "Solid metal snake" is indeed the best descriptor I can imagine, Elon. Thanks a lot.
That literally looks like something you'd find in tentacle porn
That literally looks like something you'd find in tentacle porn
That IS tentacle porn.
But in this case, I think like it.
Seems a little unnecessary
Cool as hell though

Well with the orifice tracking technology this has I think it would do just fine as a sex toy.

Someone needs to make an edited gif of that.

I just want someone to add some text at the end that just flashes, "Boop".
Though its really idea, aren't Tesla charging stations free for owners? Because it'd be awesome to just pull up, have your car be charged for you while you just sit inside. Especially if the weather outside is frightful.
They sped it up quite a bit. Isn't it actually half the speed of that in the gif?
I think this would be cool if you could have it in your own garage. Just park and forget and next day you're fully charged without even having to think about it.
Maybe a bit over the top but ideas like this sprout off into other delicious ideas later down the line.
Well in the video in to OP it took nearly 40 seconds to find the port
Impressive but not really useful
If you are parking overnight, 40 seconds is essentially irrelevant. Drive into your garage. Go to your house. Come back the next day and the car is fully charged.
Seems strangely phallic.
It's for when Teslas have full autopilot and have the ability to park themselves without an occupant. They want to be able to drive up to the front door, get out, push a button on your Tesla app, and the car with drive and park itself. If it parks itself at a charger, the charger needs to be able to connect automatically.
Once you're done your business you'll be able to press a pick me up button and the car will come and get you wherever you are based on your phones gps. You'll be able to time it so it's there by the time you get out of your office or whatever. "Pick me up at work in 10 minutes."

It's also not as fast as the gif makes it out to be right now. I'm sure they may be able to change that in the future.
Fair enough. But is it really worth the potential thousands this thing may cost just to save a few seconds that it'd take to use a normal charger that you put in yourself?
I'm sure they said this about automatic sliding doors.
Fair enough. But is it really worth the potential thousands this thing may cost just to save a few seconds that it'd take to use a normal charger that you put in yourself?
If they make it faster, it could have you charging before you get out of your car. Or maybe you're unloading kids or groceries, or maybe someone calls, or maybe you're running late, or maybe you had a bad day and forget to charge, or maybe you really need to use the bathroom and then forget.
Tesla likes to combat all the inconveniences people say EVs have.
"They're not fast enough."
It can do 0-60 in 3 seconds.
"You can't go far on a charge."
It can do 280 miles per charge.
"Well it takes too long to charge."
Here's a nationwide supercharger network that can charge it under an hour.
"Still not fast enough."
Here's a battery swapping machine that can do it in 90 seconds without leaving your car.
"Well having to plug it in every day is inconvenient"
It can plug itself in.

"It costs too much."
Here's a factory the size of a small town that'll drive down prices.
Well after reading this it seems like a useful feature, I guess.
But it depends on how much this thing costs extra.
If they can market it in a sleek design package like the at home fast charger and the powerwall battery pack, and sell it under $5,000 its going to sell like hotcakes.
Fair enough. But is it really worth the potential thousands this thing may cost just to save a few seconds that it'd take to use a normal charger that you put in yourself?
When you buy a $100k+ car, I don't think this matters too much. Convenience is very big in every industry.
People just like to be lazy.

If you're a person in the market for a tesla I don't think you'd care about how much this thing costs.
This is simultaneously absolutely terrific and terrifying.
The fast motion gif does not help.
The only way I'll feel comfortable around that thing is if you make the base look like an elephant's head or if you put googly eyes on the end of it.
unless if tesla decides to go the extra mile and makes the googly eyes stare at you
I'm kind of glad it's meant for auto-pilot charging, though. I won't have to see this thing as much.

that's actually pretty cool, i haven't really thought about selfdriving cars without occupants yet, i only thought of it as handy when you are too lazy to drive or something

Cars without drivers at all have the coolest implications, though. Fully automated taxis could revolutionize public transport, especially for American cities, which tend to have very bad public transit networks.
Taci depots with automated chargers, combined with fully autonomous vehicles, combined with an app to call for a ride could be run on a skeleton crew quite cheaply and conveniently. You think Taxi companies hate Uber? Wait until robo-cars hit the streets!

Elon said the cars in their current hardware configuration could do it now, as all the new cars since late 2014 have the autopilot sensors. However, it's currently not legal to have cars drive themselves in most places so it's really down to legal and software. As they roll out the autopilot (like the upcoming 7.0 firmware update that allows autosteering cruise control), the cars will get more and more autonomous-ready. Elon said due to legal reasons, the self parking ability will at first only be legally allowed on your private property, like parking at home.
I'm liking the idea of getting dropped off at home and having the car go hit the gas station for you. Even if there's a lot of the cars (somehow) and only a few chargers, nobody's stuck waiting in line, and maybe they can even sort themselves out if one has a more immediate return time than others

That's going to be a nightmare for transportation workers. Transportation is currently one of the biggest, if not the biggest industry in the world. And it could believably be unmanned in 10-20 years. Once we got self driving taxis, we'll have self-driving semis, construction equipment, ships, boats, commercial jets, etc.
It's going to raise an interesting labor question.

Finland's taken good care that it costs way too much to buy over a normal car. On Teslas site the prices for Finland are between 82000€ - 115000€ (89 564$ - 125 608$). I can get a brand new Audi for half or even the THIRD of the price depending on which version I choose. I really want a Tesla but GODDAMN!

But it's not 100k, it's ~65k. $80k for the fancy one. (Yay Tesla!)

It wouldn't be too great in my town.
I don't even know where I'd charge it, and the electric bill at home is big enough already. Plus, if I DO get problems with it, I wouldn't be able to fix it for a small price, unlike the stone age of a car I already have. Plus, it costs WAY too much for anyone's pocket, unless you're stinking rich, and I do mean rich.
But I'll be damned if it ain't a marvelous car. Interior could be a tad better, beamer levels of better, but its still a great car.

This is just the way the world works though. If your skill can be replaced by something cheaper and more efficient, then you need to learn a new skill, or risk becoming irrelevant. The lack of these jobs just means more automation of low skill jobs, and more skilled jobs in the electronics and computer science fields.
The jobs don't go away, they just move to more skilled jobs since we are creating more effective ways to deal with them.

Carpool taxis would be neat, where you call in a taxi, pay more or less based on how urgently you need to get somewhere, and if you pay less for a less urgent arrival you get given an absolute latest arrival time, which means the taxi could detour to pick up and drop off others before/after it drops you off. More efficient use of traffic volume hopefully

How much do you spend on gas though? I guarantee you that electricity does not cost more than gas. The interior on the newer ones is actually quite luxurious compared to some of the same priceline vehicles.
Holy fuck, I've gotten merge sniped like 3 times in a row now...

Oh, I know. I'm not against automation. I encourage it. I'm just aware of the shitstorm it's going to cause. I believe it's inevitable though if we want to progress into the future.
