A Minnesota Democrat who had sex with a 17-year-old boy at an I-35 rest stop says he is dropping his re-election bid, just hours after he said he would stay in the race, according to news reports.
"I changed my mind," 56-year-old state Rep. Kerry Gauthier told the Associated Press. "Too much. It's just too much."
He also told AP that an overdose of muscle relaxants he took last week was a suicide attempt.
AP's report appears to follow a call Gauthier made to Northland's News Center to announce his withdrawal from the race, which could decide whether Democrats or Republicans control the state House.
The station writes: "Gauthier says there's too much political fallout and it's too hard on him psychologically. He doesn't know what he's going to do but he knows that staying in the race will be too hard on him emotionally."
Gauthier added that he was not resigning, because he wants to keep his health benefits through the end of the year.
The St. Louis County Attorney is not charging Gauthier for having oral sex with the unidentified teen at the rest stop near Duluth late July 22. Gauthier said that he met the boy after posting an ad on Craigslist and that the boy claimed he was 18 years old. The teen admitted to police he had lied about his age.
Democratic leaders had been pressuring Gauthier to withdraw, as did Republicans. One GOP House member called him "a child molester."
Earlier today, after vowing to stay in the race, he told News Center:
"I am a better person than this incident portrayed me … and I will demonstrate this in my future behavior. I can change my behavior, but I cannot change the fact that I am a gay man, and have known this since my college days. I simply must act like a mature gay man would act, and not as the incident portrays me."
He also said he was getting counseling and "will not get involved in this type of unacceptable relationship again," the station writes.
the age of consent there is 16 but still why would you do this if you are running for office?
Look in those eyes. Tell me he doesn't just want a lot of young boy penis.

wow, dude's totally falling apart. can't say I blame him, honestly.
17 year old boy? Sure, I could understand if the boy was 10 or something, but 17? Maybe it's just me, though..

It's 18 here in CA which sucks because most CA girls get really gross after high school

we have no clue what the 17 year old boy looked like and the boy did say on a craigslist ad that he was 18
i dont think the guy meant to have sex with a minor, but now that everybody knows about it he's pretty much just watching everything he's worked for in his life fall apart

the age of consent feels pretty arbitrary when the teenager's only a year off imo
Normally it's Republicans that get caught doing things like this.

Tbh I can't actually recall any Republicans getting caught for things like this in recent years.

Happens all the time dude. Except they use rentboys.
Damn, I know him. Even helped his campaign for city council back in 2009. He's a pretty swell guy in person.

I can see the logic there; personally I think using time as the main measure of age is kind of outdated and arbitrary. If anything, a person's age should be measured in maturity and "fortitude", both biological and psychological, with the time measurement being on the sidelines. That way we wouldn't be troubled by arbitrary nonsense that fails to take into account how well-developed an individual is, since often times there are people who're biologically mature yet mentally "young" and vice versa. For example, in regards to drugs and alcohol people are affected by different chemicals with varying degrees of "severity", like a Japanese businessman who is singing karaoke after a single cup of sake, or a burly English bricklayer who can handle several pints before he falls off his stool.
Another example would involve media with "mature" subjects, such as violence, sex, fear, discrimination, drugs, etc, that kinda stuff. Some people are easily influenced by fiction, whilst other folks know to take such things with a dose of salt and appreciate them for what they are; some do not react well to mature subjects, whilst others aren't too badly affected by them. Taking these elements into account and formulating appropriate tests would help to formulate a somewhat universal standard of mental maturity and stability, which alongside a well-devised universal standard of biological maturity and fortitude would allow for greater precision in judging a person, rather than the primitive, arbitrary and rather generic system of counting years that humankind has used since time immemorial.
With a "Mind and Body" system of personal statistics, we'd be able to judge the maturities of people with more precision and clarity. Sure, I know it sounds vaguely gamey, but all it really is is numbers used to measure the many aspects of a person, and numbers are what we use for precise measurements of pretty much anything, so I don't see much of a problem with it. I don't have the specifics pinned down, since this is a theoretical barebones concept, and I am not an expert in biology or psychology; the system would require a team of biologists and psychologists to fully flesh out and make legit, even though it'd probably take decades or even centuries to become fully interwoven with the fabric of human society, especially since census takers would have a lot of work cut out for them. When complete and engrained in popular culture, it'd help to allay confusions and misunderstandings based on arbitrary time-numbers, like Mr Gauthier's tryst with that teenage "twink" on Craigslist, or that situation involving a 13 year old Chinese boy (Peng Peng, I think his name was) in a massage parlour.
For all we know the lad could have been of the correct standards of maturity in mind and body according to the Mind & Body "benchmarks", or he could've been below said standards, and thanks to the lack of said system, coupled with dependency on the archaic method of standalone chronological measurement used for age, we'll probably never know. The system would require a lot of effort to set up and maintain, and semi-regular checkups and re-evaluations would be required to give proper measurements and updates on one's statistics, but in the end i'm certain it would be worth it for humanity as a whole.
On a more grounded note, hopefully Mr Gauthier gets the support and counseling he needs; these kinds of situations can be difficult tests of personality and whatnot.
Even straight guys can go to jail because the girl lied when she said she was 18. The point here isn't that he's gay, it's that you can't use "I thought he/she was 18" as an excuse.
Hooking up through Craigslist, meeting at a rest stop, all that is cliché as hell but it's the underage part that's a killer to his career.

Definitely a creepy face.

Jesus Christ, have you ever heard of the concept of compartmentalising?
