We’re not there yet, but when Valve release the VR update for TF2 later this month, we’ll be a big step closer.
Expected, but not this soon. My Rift is ready.
Oooooh now I really can't wait. My dev kit should ship any day now.
Hey, this reminds me of that other peripheral that TF2 supported way back when. Y'know, the failed one with the pistol grip.
Anyone remember what it was called?
Novint falcon. Issue with it was that it was only XYZ movement, no rotation, so it made your wrist hurt after a short session.
The razer hydra is going to shine brilliantly with this however.

EDIT: Ninja'd.

God I want this, but 300 bucks is steep for me.
this will never be practical for competitive gaming, and the screen resolution and LCD panel quality will probably always be bad
this will never be practical for competitive gaming
that was clearly not the reason why they designed this
that was clearly not the reason why they designed this
but TF2 is a multiplayer game so no one would wanna nerf themselves in in a multiplayer game
they should have done it with Half Life 2 or L4D2

I bought a GPS even though race car drivers don't need them, what's your point? I doubt any competitive pro gamers care in the least about immersion, for them it's all about twitch controls and keeping an eye on as much available data with minimal effort so they can prepare for and react to encounters accordingly. Does that mean that RPGs and more story-oriented games should just be left as-is to cater to that? This is a branch off to the side, everything will still be accessible normally, but the existence and popularity of the device will drive developers to shift focus a lot and refine things/find ways to optimize best

Oculus Rift is going to sell like hell because of that hat.
I can cover the cost of my Rift for the price of the hat, this is going to rule!

People wear giant sniper magnetic hats in TF2, I'm sure they won't mind this
I hope the final version of the Rift ships with those googly eyes.
I hope the final version of the Rift ships with those googly eyes.
I don't.
I hope they have googly eyes which are literally molded into the case as opposed to stuck on.
This'll certainly get those dev kits flying off the shelves, even if the people buying them are most likely doing it for the novelty of having a dev Rift :v:. Still pretty neat.
Can't wait til a consumer version goes out.
Expected, but not this soon. My "Rift" is ready.
:v:
So any of you bought the thing? how much should the commercial version cost? the HL2 demo was really impressive i really want to try this out
My biggest problem is the 'low-res' factor, honestly. And it'd probably jack up the production costs to fix that problem.

nifty, looks like this comes with a promo

it has been mentioned that the 'screen door' effect from having noticeable pixels is minimal if not laughably non-existant by everybody who isn't a picky snob or sensationalist gaming news writer.
Best part, they're coming out with a bigger screen for release
It's so stupid that they have to put tf2 promos with absolutely everything, a tf2 hat wont make people buy a vr headset for $500. If this continues we will eventually have burning unusual hat promos for nvidia cards.
you're a few years late to that complaint, though given TF2 is one of the first huge supporters of the oculus I think it's got more bragging rights to merit a hat than any other promo I've seen

Can't you already get unusual hats with fire effects?
Goddamnit.
I need this.
2013 is going to be an amazing technological year but BY GOD is my wallet on fire...
Oculus Rift... Google Glasses... LEAP Motion...
So many good products... ;__;

a sizeable number of dinks ordering a dev kit for the novelty or 'gotta have it NOW' factor are going to be disappointed it doesn't magically work with their game library and throw around a bunch of shit reviews/grips, muddying up its image a little. What's worse is a lot of them are getting in the way of actual devs getting their kits earlier.
This is why you should put dev kits out for a bit larger price (like google glass), so you only get people serious about developing software that will ideally make some money back. Then again, people won't pay attention to why the price is like that and just bitch and moan that it's too expensive and not worth it, muddying up the potential market in its own way

Seems there's really no easy way to cut it in this situation. Though I personally can't wait to see what games will take the biggest advantage of this tech and do it properly. First person games are going to shine like diamonds.
Horror games are going get the most out of this technology, it will be like having your head trapped in a box full of spiders and Vegemite.
Oh man, a fatal frame game using this would be boss.

I did, that was the implication actually :v:. Supposed to be getting it soon, and I still haven't decided if I'm going to do $25 credit and get an Oculus shirt or something, or get $20 in steam credit because of not releasing Doom 3 BFG with it.

Probably if there isn't much movement it's more noticeable, but in an action scene it's probably less noticeable.

I hope it's instead equipped whenever you're using the Rift. That'd be a better dynamic than another promo.
