• Galant-like Desk Model and Dimensions

Well after seeing the Ikea Galant, I love it, but what I don't love is the price tag. ~300? I can make it for a quarter of that. So I decided to model up a Galant-like desk and post the renderings and the dimensions here for anyone who would like to build it. Desk in question: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S79807274/ I think this thread may belong in a different forum, but then the people that like the galant would probably not see it, so I put it here. And if anyone wants the files, just pm me, they were made in Autodesk Inventor 2013. Seeing things like this makes me disappointed that this forum only let's you rate once...
Looks amazing! Can't wait til see the finished product!
Looks amazing! Can't wait til see the finished product!
I'm tweaking the design a bit. Because as awesome as this one is, it's not very practical due to the price of sheets metal. I had it programmed in a trumpf cnc punch too. I'm also going to be changing the material from steel to aluminum, because for some reason the aluminum pieces I need are cheaper.... There is no point in making an awesome desk that costs twice as much as the original. I'm hoping to get started this weekend.
Great idea. Could you post a materials list and build process images, would be interesting to see.
Great idea. Could you post a materials list and build process images, would be interesting to see.
Yea sure thing, I'll be updating the drawings too. I'm using angle iron instead of a .25in plate.
Woo, another Inventor User!
Woo, another Inventor User!
Best cad suite imo. Ilogic blows other automation products away. ----- Also, I am making this modular, meaning that if you own Inventor, you can adjust the length and width of the table with the input of a button and all the parts will flex to those set lengths. Including the drawings.
For those curious to what I meant, I made these pictures. I literally made everything flexable to almost any circumstance. Lowest point: [t]http://i.imgur.com/0MIWW.png[/t] Highest Point: [t]http://i.imgur.com/VIWxc.png[/t] 96"x96": [t]http://i.imgur.com/zAfDD.png[/t] 48"x48": [t]http://i.imgur.com/rfbAW.png[/t] Bottom Angle Design: [t]http://i.imgur.com/QuxAw.png[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/Kp3Dg.png[/t] Angle Sizes: [t]http://i.imgur.com/SO0ui.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/So6AA.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/0ZeiM.jpg[/t] Tube Sizes: [t]http://i.imgur.com/9hodQ.png[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/ztaZF.png[/t]
Just ordered the angle iron for about $30 bucks. Since I am doing the 6ft long version, I only needed 224in. But here is the materials list minus the wood. The tube is turning out to be pricey so I'm going to improvise with what tube I have left over from other projects.
Why go to such lengths to make an adjustable-height desk?
Why go to such lengths to make an adjustable-height desk?
Because I figure if I have the knowledge, and the means to do it, then why not. Plus, then it'll be really close to the Galant. The only real difference is that Ikea just uses square tubing instead of angle iron.
I wish I could do this!
You sir, are a winner. I cannot wait to see you begin production. You have inspired me to make my own. Funnily enough today by chance gained a desk from a family member with no further need of it. Still gonna build one.
As requested, I have started it, and have a bunch of pictures, sorry if some are blurry. The metal: [t]http://i.imgur.com/oxMgL.jpg[/t] Started cutting and tack welding: [t]http://i.imgur.com/cPACd.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/OsDVt.jpg[/t] All lined up: [t]http://i.imgur.com/tHSxu.jpg[/t] Grinding after the weld: [t]http://i.imgur.com/gS0H5.jpg[/t] Done welding: [t]http://i.imgur.com/bI1w3.jpg[/t] The movable leg idea ended up being way out of budget, due to the odd sizes I needed. The tube alone would have cost me $100 if I went that route. I made the legs 32in tall. Legs: [t]http://i.imgur.com/6zvSv.jpg[/t] Since I didn't want to just weld the legs to the table, and I didn't want to buy tube to slide over it, I decided to make it: [t]http://i.imgur.com/mqMeF.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/UVNU2.jpg[/t] Leg holder on table: (I let my brother weld those two corners, turns out, he isn't the best welder) [t]http://i.imgur.com/HpgLJ.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/020Bh.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/cSchL.jpg[/t] I ended up making the feet .125in thick, and well, it wasn't strong. So i made it out of .25in stainless steel: [t]http://i.imgur.com/mWIYi.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/PGbek.jpg[/t] Feet on legs: [t]http://i.imgur.com/BhJ2d.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/wn5Pt.jpg[/t] Table set up: [t]http://i.imgur.com/8qA6y.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/klcmh.jpg[/t] Disassembled: [t]http://i.imgur.com/Hyatn.jpg[/t] The hard part is done, and it is being sent out to the powder coater monday. Tomorrow, I am going to build the wood top, which is going to be particle board and formica on top.

That looks really fucking nice. About how many hours do you estimate you've worked on this?
About 10.
Wish I had access to all that stuff.
Yea it is really nice, but I can't do this all the time. My dads boss just owed me one, so he let us use the shop and materials. Bam! [t]http://i.imgur.com/WGDRa.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/7ERaD.jpg[/t]
It's beautiful.
What a creation! I wish I could build stuff like that
If that was mine, it would be filled with water bottles and shit within like, 1 week.
Fuck, I want one and I already have a GALANT
Between paying me, my father, and the materials, this would have costed over 500. So the galant is a better choice
Between paying me, my father, and the materials, this would have costed over 500. So the galant is a better choice
I think it's more commednable the skills you have to create such a masterpiece.
Thank you, it's more of tools of the trade. You do this long enough, it becomes second nature. I only have 5 years, but my dad has been doing it for 30 years.
I envy you. awesome job
