Reuters) - Iran's military said on Sunday it had shot down a U.S. reconnaissance drone aircraft in eastern Iran, a military source told state television.
"Iran's military has downed an intruding RQ-170 American drone in eastern Iran," Iran's Arabic-language Al Alam state television network quoted the unnamed source as saying.
"The spy drone, which has been downed with little damage, was seized by the Iranian armed forces."
Iran shot down the drone at a time when it is trying to contain foreign reaction to the storming of the British embassy in Tehran on Tuesday, shortly after London announced that it would impose sanctions on Iran's central bank in connection with Iran's controversial nuclear enrichment programme.
Britain evacuated its diplomatic staff from Iran and expelled Iranian diplomats in London in retaliation, and several other EU members recalled their ambassadors from Tehran.
The attack dragged Iran's relations with Europe to a long-time low.
Washington and EU countries have been discussing measures to restrict Iran's oil exports since the United Nations nuclear watchdog issued a report in November with what it said was evidence that Tehran had worked on designing an atom bomb.
Iran says its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful.
I wish they'd stop droning on about this.
Oh come on calm down everyone ok? Don't start a war, please. That would be totally uncool. Lets sit down and talk it out as mature, intelligent people.
Same would happen with any country that has foreign aircraft entering it's airspace.

Yeah but this is Iran so therefore they did it evilly

America sends out spy drones to map out Iran's military bases so they can plan their invasion of Iran.
Iran shoots down said drone and captures it.
Iran are the the bad guys

Iran has been the bad guys since the beginning of time, haven't you seen 300? :v:
You should totally go and beat their asses America, they're totally asking for it. This is a declaration of war!
Wikipedia says that they apparently hijacked it and landed it.
"On 4 December, the Iranian military claimed it intercepted a RQ-170 UAV, which tried to penetrate Iran's airspace through the eastern borders. According to the Fars News Agency, Iranian Electronic Warfare Units managed to take control of the UAV and take custody of it with minor damage ."

If that is true then that raises some questions about how secure these things are. You would expect them to be pretty secure really.

Haha, no. There was a thread couple of months back about how the Afghan rebels could hack into the drones and watch from their cameras. Those things are God-damn child's play to hijack.

That's the camera feed which is (was?) sent unencrypted, you would think the control system would have some protection. Did the designers of these things not take into account the fact that someone might want to steal a drone.

Pfft, those silly Arabs and Persians aren't clever enough to hack high tech American technology! They still ride camels.
Well stop fucking poking Iran

Perhaps they were relying on the drones only being used against people who can't afford computers, or something.
This is interesting. I have no love for Iran, but defending its airspace is entirely justified, and if we were too lazy/incompetent to keep it out of their hands, then that's our own fault.

Thats just a clever plot to fool everyone into thinking that they are still in the 18th century while they build up their army of hovertanks and laser artillery.
Waiting for the US to claim it was an "accident" that it crossed Iranian airspace.
ITT: Fuck america :)!!!
Seriously I'm confounded by this thread.

Well US is to blame because they are not allowed to just launch drones in foreign airspaces. So fuck USA.
It's almost like they want a war with us.
It's almost like you want a war with them.
It's almost like they want a war with us.
They are just defending their air space. Every country on the planet would be okay to do this.
Without going the full tinfoil hat route, is it possible that the US are trying to bait Iran into doing something stupid so they can respond in self defence?

Just wait until Gunfox or some other "AMERIKKA=STRONG" nutjob comes and turns this thread into a debate how Iran military sucks and how America is totally going to take the whole world over with platoon of marines, 2 pikemen, and a potato.

Baiting, perhaps. War over a lost spy drone? I'd puke if we go to war due to that.

Then watch as they do invade and get stuck with hundreds of thousands of men for years.

Don't mess with pikemen. In AoE II, those things are a pain when massed.

Don't mess with potatoes, apparently they can be used as an improvised power station.
It's almost like they want a war with us.
So Iran should just let foreign countries prance around it's airspace with drones?
They were perfectly within their rights to do this (assuming that they're telling the truth of course).
