I am interested in playing around with 3D, anyone have any experience in this? I wanted to start with open source engines, Irrlicht to be exact. Would you recommend a different engine?
Engines??? this isn't Automotive Addicts! Come back when you want to play around with motherboards or Arch Linux. (you should probably try the Programming subforum)
Have a look at: Unity: (Game engine) http://unity3d.com/unity/download/ or Unreal SDK: http://www.unrealengine.com/udk/ Blender:(modelling and animation) http://www.blender.org/download/get-blender/ Gimp: (texture editing) http://www.gimp.org/ Everything you need.

OT: Are you looking at creating something specific such as a game or just wanna screw around?
If you need tutorials on Unity+Blender check out Unity Cookie. http://cgcookie.com/unity/

OT: Are you looking at creating something specific such as a game or just wanna screw around?
I plan on making a game but I know that it is a lot of work and that there is much to learn before I may be successful. At first I am gonna play a bit around and get a hang on it. And I know what you think, "there is another guy who wants to make a game, and he doesnt know how much work that is and that you have to be really passionate about it if you wanna get things done", I know that, but you gotta start somewhere, right?
Good luck, you'll need it!

Unlike many people around here in Facepunch, I'm not one of those guys. Been there many times with trying to make one but I always just got bored of it. So good luck to you and I hope you have the time to complete what you wish and stay with. Don't give up!
