But being a sucker for a Halloween-themed episodes, I tuned in to Fox's "animation domination" comedy block last night. What I saw was seriously awful. In this episode, we're introduced to Quagmire's little sister, Brenda, and Lois expresses her concern over Brenda's abusive boyfriend, Jeff: "She's still with him? Isn't he the one that beats her?" and Peter replies, "Yeah, but she's gotten a lot better." This is just the first of many, many disgusting non-jokes. The episode only gets worse from there. Quagmire begs Lois to talk to his sister about the problem, but Peter butts in, "Well, let's hope she's good at talking because we know she doesn't listen so good." When Quagmire asks Joe, a police officer, if there is anything in his power that he can do to stop the violence, he responds, "Sorry — police policy is that we can't step in until it's too late." Instead, Joe suggests an intervention, in which Quagmire reads a letter to his beloved little sister that goes something like this:
The person I see before me right now is just a punching bag. And I call you "person," not "woman," because a woman is a strong, beautiful vibrant creature. Sadly, the fact that you are with Jeff proves to me that you have made a choice to make your life worse.
The intervention ends when Jeff shows up and the couple announces that they're having a baby and getting married — but as Brenda says, "I'd show you the ring, but it's under this splint." And the "humor" is limited to the aforementioned one-liners; we've got Jeff violently dragging Brenda into another room, offscreen, where we can hear the physical abuse. This isn't a PSA or an after-school special; this is the fucking Family Guy. But given that this loathsome episode pegged itself to a very serious problem, you'd think maybe at the end they'd flash a hotline number or something. You'd be wrong. Definitely the scariest Halloween special we've ever seen.
Family Guy never seems to surprise me. Or make me laugh.
What the hell. I really really want this show cancelled.
They're trying too hard to appeal to the immature fanbase
I don't understand how domestic violence is where this guy draws the line, but all of the other equally as bad or worse subjects Family Guy jokes about are fine though.
The show was better before 2000.
Wow. That's just disgusting.
You're supposed to be able to joke about everything, but.. I dunno. Not a smart move by MacFarlane at any rate.
For those of you that watch the video, they're not making fun of domestic violence.
I'm guessing the message of that episodes is you have to be careful with your choice?
It seems today that all you see is violence in movies and sex on tv
I think Seth is purposely trying to run it into the ground, he even said him self in an interview this year that Family Guy should have ended a while ago but the Fans keep wanting more and Fox keeps renewing.
Its just a show, Besides they do something that makes people upset every episode.
Anyways they Don't make fun of Domestic Abuse in the episode, they do take it seriously at most parts.
the episode wasn't mocking domestic violence at all, the central plot point was how they were trying to get Brenda out of the relationship sure they had a few cheap jokes thrown in, but it's not like they were very immature when dealing with the actual problem and its not like this is the lowest that Family Guy's ever gone I don't like the show, but this really isn't anything to get worked up about
I laughed, I'm a dick :(
This seems like a massive overreaction, at least the way the article is worded. Why am I not surprised its a Gawker run website. That aside, from that clip it doesn't seem that they are trying to make jokes about, a joke would have to be funny. It just seems they are including it as part of the plot, if a sitcom decided to have a semi serious episode where the main plot was domestic abuse I doubt people would complain as much. That clip of course only shows the stuff the articles writer thought to include, I bet it makes more sense in context. I was intending to watch this episode anyway soon so I guess I will find out.
Anyone who acts surprised or offended by this is an idiot. Seth is a comedian. Comedians take uncomfortable or hateful topics and squeeze entertainment out of them. That is what they do. Shows like Family Guy make fun of war, Nazi Germany, murder, slavery - all things measurably, exponentially worse than domestic violence. Sure, maybe it was in bad taste. And maybe it wasn't. Who the fuck are you to decide? And I'm not even a fan. I dislike McFarlane.
Wow, really, people get mad over this? What about all the other "offensive" episodes?
What do you tell a woman with 2 black eyes? Nothing, you told her twice
ITT: A majority of people who didn't see the episode and are going off of a biased blog piece written by a female (who is thus more likely to be biased in this particular situation). Oh and the site's demographic is almost entirely women.
isnt simpsons just as bad?
Seth Mcfarland recently said he wants the show to be over. I wouldn't be surprised if he was trying to get it cancelled.

Seth is not funny, while still being an asshole.
to be honest it got a bit too uncomfy for me. sure i can understand dark humor, but it's a bit too much to throw into a 30 minute episode.
I laughed, I'm a dick :(
There we no jokes.
Meh. I like family guy, even though I don't watch it often. This won't change my view of it.
Uhh... what the fuck? The writer of that article has their head stuck right up their arse or something. Isn't it fucking obvious MacFarlane does this shit to make a point? Think of that episode about weed. Even a moron could understand his views on it from that.
When Quagmire asks Joe, a police officer, if there is anything in his power that he can do to stop the violence, he responds, "Sorry — police policy is that we can't step in until it's too late."
Shit like this has ACTUALLY HAPPENED. That's probably where he got the inspiration.
The person I see before me right now is just a punching bag. And I call you "person," not "woman," because a woman is a strong, beautiful vibrant creature. Sadly, the fact that you are with Jeff proves to me that you have made a choice to make your life worse.
It seems to me that they are trying to make the point that some women need to get out of abusive relationships, and not think that they can change something in the abuser.
For those of you that watch the video, they're not making fun of domestic violence.
Isn't this entire episode a satire, pointing out how ridiculous and horrible domestic abuse is? They're a comedic show so of course it isn't going to be straightforward, but for the love of god facepunch, use your analytic skills.
