Atari and Champions Online developer, Cryptic Studios, have announced that the game will become a free to play title beginning in Q1 2011. Premium content and adventure packs will be available in the CStore for additional purchase. Current subscribers will be called 'gold members' and regular monthly subscriptions will be available to new players for $14.99 per month. These players will receive all content at no cost, while the "silver" free players will be asked to pay for thigns a la carte. "Transitioning Champions Online to the free-to-play model is a great opportunity to reach a whole new audience of PC gamers that view subscription fees as a barrier to entry," said John Needham, CEO of Cryptic Studios. "By taking care of our current subscription-based community and welcoming the addition of new players through free-to-play, Champions Online is poised to build upon its success and to establish a new leadership position as the first free-to-play superhero MMO." I figured this would happen soon enough. I might even try it. I wonder if it has any RP?
"regular monthly subscriptions will be available to new players for $14.99 per month." I don't understand this part.
You have to subscribe if you want complete full access.
Isn't this method of f2p the EXACT same as Everquest 2 extended?
I figured this would happen soon enough. I might even try it. I wonder if it has any RP?
As an avid CO player, there is tons of RP. Most of it good, too.
You have to subscribe if you want complete full access.
Ah, I see. The way it was all worded is confusing. Anyway, sounds cool, I really wanted this game but I didn't want it enough to pay. I love how they're all going F2P although it seems to me it's the sucky ones that resort to this. Sucks for the people who paid for those life-time memberships, I guess they're getting a little something.
I bet Rong's hero looks either like Flash either like the Scout
I actually tried the game on a free weekend when it came out a year ago, and it was really fun
I actually tried the game on a free weekend when it came out a year ago, and it was really fun
Same, the character creation is great. And I will definitely be playing this once it goes free.
Now im twice the gold member :smug:
I had a character named Achilles.
Character creation in this game is spectacular, but I never really had much interest in it after creation though.
Character creation and customization is insane...Gives City of Heroes a definite run for its money, if not more so A Melee character that uses some Ice powers? Why I don't mind if I do! Why bother having a girlfriend? This is free.
In the free trial early on in the game I got a character called Blade and a character called Commander, if it goes F2P I may re-try this.
So they're giving F2P players the "Runescape" treatment? Hey, whatever sells, right?
Chat for free players = limited. forum access = restricted screw this.
Chat for free players = limited. forum access = restricted screw this.
The game itself is way better than all those shitty F2P Korean MMOs, plus if you want to chat with friends, start a vent server or a skype party. Also, you could just have a Champions megathread on FP
Chat for free players = limited. forum access = restricted screw this.
Now take a guess why that is. You don't want gold spammers/sellers of random crap to register accounts en mass and spam your channels. In other MMOs (haven't played CO) they still do even though they have to pay for it, and get banned. Now imagine what happens when it is free.
Also, I think you can sign up for the F2P beta now.
I'm glad more MMOs are doing this because for one thing, if it's actually a game worth playing, then they won't need all that extra money from subscription fees. I mean look at Guild Wars, some people say it's not a REAL MMO but it was still wildely popular for a time and it had players just as dedicated as WoW players and it never had subscription fees. Also in case you haven't heard Guild Wars 2 will actually work more like WoW online rather than being seperated by loading screens and only you and your party being in the same explorable area(and still no subscription fees).
shitty
CO was actually a pretty decent game. Fun to make the characters, not as fun to play. After playing for a long time, really you can mix and match powers as they say, but it really isn't as practical as they make it sound. It's still fairly hard to make a good combo of powers to work well together. But Cryptic has made some progress on the game and it's picked up a little bit.
I suppose I will try it when it does free.
Like I said in the other thread, it's not really free-to-play if lots of the content is locked up behind an optional payment system. It should be called "free-to-play" or free-to-play*. Free-to-play implies that the game and all of its content requires no payment to access.
I don't think it'll be fun playing as a free user. Most of the cool travel powers will be restricted. The game is worth the subscription though.
oh shit, it really says i payed 14.99. Im so fucked
might actually try this game out. [editline]27th October 2010[/editline] oh wait... just noticed it said it will be F2P first quarter 2011, meh.

They have to make money some way and the "buy bits and pieces or subscribe for everything" approach is by far the most common. LOTRO, for example, is free until about level 25, where you start having to buy quest packs or use a $15 subscription to get everything. You can unlock most things through earned store credit, though.
