• Knife holding up or down?

In a lot of game's i see(STALKER, BFBC2, etc.), i see knives being held down, while in other games(GTA, CSS, etc.), I see them being held up. I would think that holding your knife up would be a lot more deadly since you can easily stab from a distance compared to holding it upside down and stabbing from a distance. Is holding your knife down better or is it just held "down" to look cooler?
Well i think with holding the knife down, you could slash straight across, or go up behind someone and stab them in the chest (i think he does that on assassins creed). However holding the knife up means you wouldn't have to bring it upand then back down to stab, you could just stab straight forward (if your target was front of you) reducing the time it takes for you to actually stab your target.
Hold it by the tip and throw it
Hold it by the tip and throw it
It's not that easy, some knives with heavier handle than blade will just hit them with the handle itself, better to hold it the other way then. And to answer your question: Depends on the knife.
From what my dad told me, (Who was in the military for 10 years, Forward observer, Fought in desert storm/desert shield, Yatta Yatta.) It's for when you slash, It's deeper and the cut is longer, If I remember right, But don't quote me on this.
if you hold it down with the blade parallel to your forearm you can quickly slash someone's face or whatever. if you hold it out you could stab from a bit further away, but it's not the best way as you're more likely to cut yourself in the process and just doesn't look as cool.
and just doesn't look as cool.
Military tactics  [editline]12:36AM[/editline] Also, if you hold it point down, you can get a lot more power in the stab and a much quicker upwards slash. Theres also less chance of you losing your grip and just somewhat punching the guy, and in a life and death situation, thats a no-no.
Down, as it's safer and gives you the leverage to stab.
Holding it up gives you more control and holding it down gives more power.
If the knife is held downwards, it's much harder to block. I've all these Krav Maga books that support me. But when you're attacking? I'd say you use the way you're more experienced with.

Always hold a knife up if you are in a fight. Unless you know what your doing don't hold a knife down to fight someone.
Up if you want to stab. Down if you want to slash. Also down if you're holding a weapon at the same time (metal gear style). The knife facing down could be used to finish them once in close proximity. Like when doing Chin Na.

Doesn't that always depend on the situation?
What about sideways?
What, between your rude and ring fingers?
Think it just depends what way you prefer it yourself. Holding down would more be slashing I'd say and up..stabbing i guess. I'm not entirely sure? Just kill the fucker whatever way is best D:
Hold down cos you da bomb.
Generally, when you throw something at someone, like said knife, you want to hold it by the lightest part of the blade. So if it's handle heavy, hold the blade. If it's blade heavy, throw it by the handle. Down if you're an Aztec. Down if you're a Ninja. Up if you want to stab them in the guts from the front. Down if you want to stab someone in the back from behind. Up if you're fighting someone else with a knife. ... And I don't know what to do if you're fighting someone with a gun. Throw it and run? And pray they're a crap shot?
Holding it down is for killing. Holding it up is to cut up yesterday's dinner.
always down easier on wrist allows you to "fillet" the back of peoples hand should they grab your wrist in defense

Down if you know what you're doing.
You do not hold a knife with the blade up. You are an idiot if you do so. Blade down in real life combat is how any military will teach you, and it is also just far more effective in any setting.
Hold the knife "down".. Holding it with the blade up is for newfags who can't use a knife for shit.. :smugdog:
Holding a knife down is obviously better because that's what the Spy does.
Knife have two common attack Stab Slash Either way they are both dangerous
Change between the two really fast and your assailant won't know what's going on and will run.
