The studies -- run by Maastricht University in the Netherlands on an individual, social media, and societal level -- all concluded that people who swear are more honest. "The consistent findings across the studies suggest that the positive relation between profanity and honesty is robust, and that the relationship found at the individual level indeed translates to the society level," the study read. While foul language is thought to be impolite, people who use curse words are less likely to care what others think and thus more likely to speak the truth, according to researchers. In one part of the study, 276 participants were asked to self-report the use of profanity in everyday life, give reasons for the use of profanity and answer a lie-scale.
http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2017/01/new_jerseyans_are_profane_but_honest_study_reveals.html#incart_river_home NJ pride :words:
Wasn't there some bullshit that said that people who swear are insecure? Seems to directly contradict the study.
Wasn't there some bullshit that said that people who swear are insecure? Seems to directly contradict the study.
I don't see how insecurity and honesty are mutually exclusive?
I feel like if you swear constantly it loses some impact, also that it is very unprofessional to constantly swear. Just my personal opinion and I don't swear at all unless under very specific scenario. For example when I get pretty mad or angry at someone or a group of people (which happens very rarely) and they know me and I start swearing. It makes it a billion times bigger impact to them because they know I don't swear so when I do its a bigger deal and that im 100% serious and not joking about anymore.
That's fucking incredible. I swear pretty often but it's become a part of my speech so I don't really notice it myself.
Wasn't there some bullshit that said that people who swear are insecure? Seems to directly contradict the study.
insecurity doesn't correlate with dishonesty, it may correlate with unnecessarily aggressive/defensive verbal behavior but not necessarily lying
they should come down here and see if they can match us for how many times the word fuck is used in 1 sentence. I can understand when in a professional environment you've gotta tone down the cussing and in some other occasions, I don't mind it at all really.
I feel like after reading this, now it's going to be something that's self-fulfilled. I don't pay attention to the frequency I use profanity, I actually rarely use it around other people, the most used instances is to just vent out frustration, but it doesn't feel like it's too common.
I don't see how insecurity and honesty are mutually exclusive?
If you're insecure about yourself you're more likely to want to make yourself appear differently, to try to hide those insecurities, which by default means telling a few lies here and there.
its a jersey thing
Nice one cunts.
Nice one cunts.
Cunt is more of a Aussie/British thing. In the US we mostly say 'fucker'.
It's pretty surprising how offended Americans get when you say cunt. Honestly it's no big deal to me.
shut your fucking mouth cunt - best insult
If you're insecure about yourself you're more likely to want to make yourself appear differently, to try to hide those insecurities, which by default means telling a few lies here and there.
nah I don't think insecure people lie a lot they just think people are looking at their flaws all the time and if you ask them they'll tell you they don't think they look that good at all
Australians are still the best in the world when it comes to swearing. Americans swearing just sounds annoying with most accents. Eastern Europeans come second, very few can beat a good 'Kurwa' every now and again.
Wait, people in other states don't swear as much as us? Fuck, dude, I thought others were just trying to be more polite when not swearing as much as my friends or I.
Wasn't there some bullshit that said that people who swear are insecure? Seems to directly contradict the study.
There was a study saying that intelligent people swear more, but its flawed.
Fuckin' Italian people
I'm kind of surprised that even though swearing and honesty correlate, the volume of swearing in New Jersey correlates with honesty. If swearing is normalized, wouldn't swearing often not really indicate that they don't care how they're perceived?
This is some cocksucker tier fuckery type of bullshit I've ever squanched in my pussified life, goddamnit.
Maybe they're just in pain a lot. I've read that swearing produces endorphins and whatnot that relieves pain and stress. Which is why you curse every fucking time you smash your goddamn cunt of a finger in the car door bloody hell.
Fuckin A
