I know this is kind of long, but please, I have tried everything I can think of
Where to start... a bit of background:
About 3 weeks ago I upgraded from my AMD Phenom II x4 965 to an i5 3570k, which also involved buying a new mobo of course. Reinstalled windows along with the change and everything seemed to work fine for about 2 weeks. I began getting some blue screens and found that my RAM was faulty, I then RMA'd it and got a replacement which appears to be just fine (memtest86). About a week and a half ago I began playing Just Cause 2 again, and still everything worked fine. Then about half a week later; the freezing started.
I would find that when I loaded my save game on JC2, the game would work for about 10 seconds and then freeze, I couldn't ctrl+alt+del out of it most the time and I would have to reset my PC. I also began frequently getting "AMD Display driver crashed and has recovered" popping up, even when just browsing the internet.
I tried everything on AMDs page suggesting how to deal with this, as I assume these 2 problems are linked, and it seemed nothing helped so I tried the last thing they suggested, a clean install. I did so and....
I kept having the same problem. I tried more things and eventually tried changing to AMD's beta drivers, which seemed to fix the crashing in JC2... for a while then it came back. I clean installed AGAIN this time using a different, more up to date windows 7 installation disk... and you guessed it, still having the problems.
My PC specs are:
i5 3570k, stock settings. (3 weeks old)
MSI Z77A-G45 mobo (3 weeks old)
Corsair vengeance 1600mhz 2x4GB (8GB) RAM (About 1 week old and according to 2 passes of memtest, nothing wrong)
2 6870's in Crossfire (1 Sapphire Toxic, 1 XFX DD, both are factory overclocked)
I am getting bluescreens pretty frequently, not necessarily in games.
I should also point out, I have been getting the same crashes in other games, so it is not JC2's fault.
JC2 seems to crash (usually taking the PC with it) every time I try and play it.
I have been using WhoCrashed to find out a bit about the bluescreens, and it seems that in every crash it says something like "This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem." so hopefully this isnt a hardware problem.
I dont seem to get bluescreens in game, it just freezes and I have to reset the PC, the bluescreens come about doing other things, like browsing the web.
So, any ideas at all? I can upload the minidump files if anyone thinks they might help. But as I said, I dont get bluescreens in the game crashes, just freezes.
I don't think you mentioned it, but have you checked if its overheating?
I had. But I believe I have found the problem.
I decided to try putting the old ram back in and lo and behold everything seems to work. I am going to put the new ram back in later to check that it is indeed that, but I think that that was the problem. Kind of annoyed that the replacement ram was broken, but oh well. I probably should have tried that earlier, but I didn't really think of it until I typed this out. I'll report back once I try the other ram again and confirm that it was that.
