But the World Health Organization’s new chief is making the longtime African leader a “goodwill ambassador.” With Mugabe on hand, WHO director-general Tedros Ghebreyesus told a conference in Uruguay this week on non-communicable diseases that he’d agreed to be a “goodwill ambassador” on the issue. Tedros, an Ethiopian who became WHO’s first African director-general this year, said Mugabe could use the role “to influence his peers in his region.” A WHO spokeswoman confirmed the comments to The Associated Press on Friday. In his speech, Tedros described Zimbabwe as “a country that places universal health coverage and health promotion at the center of its policies to provide health care to all.” Two dozen organizations — including the World Heart Federation, Action Against Smoking and Cancer Research U.K. — released a statement slamming the appointment, saying health officials were “shocked and deeply concerned” and citing his “long track record of human rights violations.” The groups said they had raised their concerns with Tedros on the sidelines of the conference, to no avail. The southern African nation once was known as the region’s prosperous breadbasket. But in 2008, the charity Physicians for Human Rights released a report documenting failures in Zimbabwe’s health system, saying that Mugabe’s policies had led to a man-made crisis. “The government of Robert Mugabe presided over the dramatic reversal of its population’s access to food, clean water, basic sanitation and health care,” the group concluded. “The Mugabe regime has used any means at its disposal, including politicizing the health sector, to maintain its hold on power.” The report said Mugabe’s policies led directly to “the shuttering of hospitals and clinics, the closing of its medical school and the beatings of health workers.”
I feel protected by the WHO
I feel as reassured as I felt when Saudi Arabia was elected to the UN Human rights Commission.
Is it really opposite day again already?
Is this one of those things where an international organization sucks the dick of a deplorable country or person because they hope it will improve their behavior since criticizing them isn't working I imagine Saudi Arabia being elected to the UN Human Rights Commission was the same deal. It seems assbackwards but there has to be a reason they're doing it. For some people, showing them insincere respect that they've done nothing to earn might give you more control over them than giving them criticism they deserve.
What is it with the UN and wanting to appoint the worst possible candidates for their cabinets? This isn't helping inspire confidence in the UN's ability to do it's job.
Ah good old Robert "I am the Hitler of the time" Mugabe.
Already cancelled.
The World Health Organization has revoked the appointment of Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe as a goodwill ambassador following a widespread outcry.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/world-africa-41713919
Already cancelled. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/world-africa-41713919
Should have never happened in the first place, and the fact that it did to begin with shows something is fundamentally wrong with these UN organizations.
maybe jospeh kony can be the next ambassador

He's been removed http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/22/africa/who--mugabe-controversy/index.html
In making the appointment, Tedros, an Ethiopian and WHO's first African director-general, had said Mugabe would use his role to ensure other leaders make noncommunicable diseases a priority.
this is still some pretty flimsy and poorly thought out shit. comunicable diseases are still africa's single largest threat, you can worry about heart attacks and diabedies once your people aren't dying from malaria, ebola, HIV, cholera, PLAGUE....
