The atheist group Central Florida Freethought says a recent Collier County court ruling gives them the right to distribute books such as "Why Jesus?," "What is a Free Thinker?" and "Why Women Need Freedom from Religion" after the World Changers Religious Organization was allowed to place bibles in the schools.
"The county has invited people in now to do this, and what we need to do is put the views of the biblical creationists into perspective with our perspective," said David Williamson of Central Florida Freethought.
"It's not tit for tat. Our effort is to ensure the county realizes this is the wrong policy."
Williamson said his group is affiliated with the national organization "Freedom From Religion Foundation."
That group's attorney sent a letter to Orange County Public Schools objecting to the district's policy allowing outside groups into schools at all. If the district doesn't change its policy, they will go ahead with the plan to distribute their atheist literature.
The general counsel for Orange County schools said their policy will stand, with very specific rules for what can be distributed.
"Anything that contains pornographic material, any references to advertising, alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs, or anything disruptive to school district and their educational facility" will not be allowed, according to Diego "Woody" Rodriguez.
Volunteers will be subject to background checks, can't have contact with Orange County students and must plan everything in advance. They must only set up a table and leave the books and brochures there.

Oh you cunts. The Bible has societal, cultural and historical significance and hence requires a look-over even though you may not agree with the contents.
Distributing propaganda like that is just a douche move imo; its not like the students aren't smart enough to make their owned damned decisions
I see no problem.
Oh you cunts. The Bible actually has societal, cultural and historical significance and hence requires a look-over even though you may not agree with the contents.

You're right, only the Christians should be allowed to do it. The bibles are being placed into the schools for indoctrination, not to be studied as literature.
That group's attorney sent a letter to Orange County Public Schools objecting to the district's policy allowing outside groups into schools at all.
Seriously? That sounds rather petty.
This is a good idea, it'll help balance things out.
I see no problem.

There's a difference between ancient text and text made to disprove it imo
I suppose its ok to do so; not necessary in my eyes though. You could just, you know, not read the Bible?
You know, aggressive atheists are just as bad as aggressive religious folk, distributing books and shit? Yeah that's cool you're trying to prove a point that the policy is retarded, why not just open an actual debate with policy makers instead of distributing books.
Lay out an actual fucking argument for your side of the debate and present it to the appropriate people, not parcel out books and shit to everyone, because it just comes across as tit for tat no matter how much they don't want it to be taken that way.
In better words. Aggressive atheists
The Bible has societal, cultural and historical significance
because this is exactly what the religious organization that placed them in schools was thinking.
There's a difference between ancient text and text made to disprove it imo
Not disproving, just encouraging active inquiry and rational thought. If a person decides that a religion doesn't hold up rationally after thinking about it, then they probably won't believe it.

It's different when taught comparatively for social/cultural perspectives.. Outside of that framework it's just peddling one view over another, which can cause a huge divide for anyone who doesn't adhere to that religion, or that religions interpretation of the scripture.
This is mainly to demonstrate that if you wish to endorsing one, then you have to have all..
Otherwise you are discriminating against the rest..
In better words. Aggressive atheists
In better words: Defensive atheists.
It's good to have a group pointing out the inherent flaw in legislation, when the legislators only had (a/their) religion in mind hoping to forward it at the detriment of others, in a captive environment.
he bibles are being placed into the schools for indoctrination
That's a new one.

Because nobody has ever tried this ever. Right.

It's a book with little actual relevance to modern society, it should be kept in museums and libraries as a testament to the great effect it has had on our cultures and societies but it's a waste of paper now.
That's a new one.
Care to give an actual response?
Because nobody has ever tried this ever. Right.
Then they should keep at it, drawing media attention and laying flawless arguments for their side, continuously striving to the point where it is impossible to ignore.
Not fucking sending their bullshit "Why Jesus?" pamphlets to schools.
There's better uses of their time and funds.
"Anything that contains pornographic material, any references to advertising, alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs, or anything disruptive to school district and their educational facility" will not be allowed, according to Diego "Woody" Rodriguez.
The irony here is that bible itself was allowed then.

I'm sick of this "aggressive atheists are just as bad LOL" drivel. For one, I'd argue that's not even true. Secondly, every piece of atheist news I've seen in the last few months/years that people go "wow those assholes" is usually done in response to a religion doing the same thing, and yet no one goes "wow those christians are assholes!"
It's handing out a fucking book advocating skepticism and freethought and you act like they're going "FUCK YOU CHRISTIANS DOWN WITH RELIGION."
Care to give an actual response?
I'm just saying that I've never heard of someone describing the Bible as a tool of indoctrination. The group aren't forcing anyone into reading the book.
I remember in first year of high school every single first year pupil got given a bible. Now this isn't a faith school mind, this is a standard state school. They've continued doing it every year since. All the school's end of term assemblies are christian oriented with a vicar, prayer and everything. I'm happy to sit through it, not like I'd have anything better to do, but I still find it a pretty massive failure on the school's part to foist a religion on us.

Placing them in schools and encouraging young kids to read it is an attempt at indoctrination.

We ended up throwing those books at each other.
Oh my days.
What do you think the Christian groups are trying to accomplish by putting bibles in schools then? They aren't trying to give a lesson in world culture. It's one of the main duties of Christians to spread "the good news."
I suppose its just right not to let outside groups interfere with educational processes. It does create a distraction and a divide
My highschool was such that groups often were not allowed into the school and were forced on the streets outside if they wanted to prove something

Here is how I see the situation.
Imagine a pit, miles wide filled with people and shit, the only way to tell the people apart is they have their respective denomination/belief stamped on their forehead.
Now imagine they're slinging pig shit at each other.
Welcome to the debate.
They're all retards, they're all slinging pig shit and it's all fucking retarded, instead of handing out fucking books to people who won't give a fuck they should be drawing worldwide media attention and should be getting into the actual politics of it instead of having a public debate because they won't get any major support from the American public for at least a generation or two.
Oh you cunts. The Bible has societal, cultural and historical significance and hence requires a look-over even though you may not agree with the contents.

I'm not seeing anything valid here.
1. Atheism also has societal, cultural and historical significance, but for the better as far as advancement in the sciences goes.
2. Distributing propaganda like that is just a douche move imo: You are also describing the handout of the Bibles by saying that.
Really, this was just leveling the playing field. If one side can input their opinions, why can't the other? The truth is, everyone has the same right to share their beliefs. Whether you're okay with that is your problem.

"All religions and beliefs or lack thereof are the same."
That is what you just said. That is incorrect.
I get that if it were the Koran or something, it wouldn't have been allowed.

I think you're the cunt here. Also, have you met these fucking "kids" that are apparently smart enough to make their own damned decisions?
If you had, I doubt you'd be saying the same thing.
The bible is an important piece of literature, and I mean as a book, not a source of history or facts. Many idioms we use today came from the bible. Even Richard Dawkins enjoys reading it and thinks everyone should read it in a literature-y sort of way.
I think it would be nice to have this and other religious texts in literature classes (not science like these politicians want) in the older kids classrooms (like 15-18 year olds).
"All religions and beliefs or lack thereof are the same."
That is what you just said. That is incorrect.
No, the beliefs themselves are everyones own business, the rampancy of most religions and certainly all abrahamic religions is absolutely ridiculous.
