The position of prostitution and the law varies widely worldwide, reflecting differing opinions on victimisation and exploitation, inequality, gender roles, gender equality, ethics and morality, freedom of choice, historical social norms, and social costs and benefits.
In Western criminology, the research and analysis of prostitution usually falls within public order issues.
The legal status of prostitution varies from country to country, from being a legal activity considered a profession to being punishable by death.[1] In some jurisdictions prostitution is illegal. In other places prostitution itself (exchanging sex for money) is legal, but surrounding activities (such as soliciting in a public place, operating a brothel, and pimping) are illegal. In other jurisdictions prostitution is legal and regulated.
Should it be legalized? We basically already sell our bodies to use them for labor. I don't think it is a huge deal to sell your body in the gains of money. Some people should just be able to pay for sexual desires.
I think if it were to become legal, rape would decrease massively. And just like legalizing marijuana, it would have huge amounts of jobs available. From people filing work criteria to being the prostitute.
If it were legalized and regulated so contraception like condoms and stuff were enforced I don't see a problem with it.
Legalise it and make it a branch of the government like any other thing such as transport, healthcare, etc.
I like it illegal as it is here in Sweden.

It's just not appropriate to cast out there in society as an ordinary career path or entertainment or whatever.
I'm fine with it, as long as the women aren't abused, and the money goes to them rather than asshole pimps.
I'm fine with it just as long as there is strict regulation both for protection of the women as the customers. And as long as there is strict regulation and control on where the women come from (slave traders etc, yes they exist in the modern world).
Regulate it just like any other form of employment.
Who would even consider becoming a prostitute anyways? Is there dignity in prostitution, and would you have a life to go back to if you decided to quit?
Who would even consider becoming a prostitute anyways? Is there dignity in prostitution, and would you have a life to go back to if you decided to quit?
If society sees prostitution as shameful then yeah.
Surely if it's endorsed by the government and regulated it would lose its taboo?
Well, someone who sleeps with anybody is usually looked down upon as a whore or so, even if it isn't for money. People who go into porn are also looked down upon. It isn't necessarily because it's illegal.
No I don't think we need more sex in society, it's everywhere now.
Regulate it, License it, have a working limit on there, etc. etc.
Just make them do it in a Personal Building instead of on the Streets.
As long as there were strict health regulations to go along with it I'd say legalize it. STD screens, condom use, etc.
Also how would prostitution decrease the amount of rape?
[editline]21st September 2011[/editline]
There is usually quite alot more than sex drive involved in rape.
Well, someone who sleeps with anybody is usually looked down upon as a whore or so, even if it isn't for money. People who go into porn are also looked down upon. It isn't necessarily because it's illegal.

Why does society get to decide whether or not two or more consenting adults can have sex?
I have £200 going spare.
Legalise it now.
[editline]dont ban me please[/editline]
In the end it doesn't cause intentional harm if the hookers are self-employed.
Why does society get to decide whether or not two or more consenting adults can have sex?
Society doesn't say people can't have sex, society says it doesn't want prostitution (people paying for and selling sex) to be a part of our everyday life.
[editline]21st September 2011[/editline]
Should it be okay for our kids to learn about prostitution? If not, should it be illegal to advertize prostitution?
Society doesn't say people can't have sex, society says it doesn't want prostitution (people paying for and selling sex) to be a part of our everyday life.
That just shifts the issue. Why does society get to say prostitution cannot be part of everyday life?
No. A lot of prostitutes do it because it's their lost choice; they're out of money and in order to keep on living they do it. I find it immoral to sleep with someone for money while
she only does it to keep on living. Not to mention that sometimes there are cases in which women are kidnapped and are forced to be prostitutes
That just shifts the issue. Why does society get to say prostitution cannot be part of everyday life?
Because of our kids and other cons.
[editline]21st September 2011[/editline]
Nobody, well almost nobody sell themselves because they want to.
If it were legalized and regulated so contraception like condoms and stuff were enforced I don't see a problem with it.
I agree. Nevada has it right.

So you would deprive them of a revenue source?
Not to mention that sometimes there are cases in which women are kidnapped and are forced to be prostitutes
If that's already happening while it's illegal then I don't see how making it legal will make it worse. If anything it would improve the situation, since there wouldn't be as many criminals running the industry.
Because of our kids and other cons.
What?
I don't want my future children to be exposed to prostitution and I sure as hell don't want my children going into prostitution themselves.
Definitely, as long as it's properly regulated just like any other job.
It's just not appropriate to cast out there in society as an ordinary career path or entertainment or whatever.
Why not?
[editline]21st September 2011[/editline]
Because of our kids and other cons.
SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN!
Really...?
Because there is nothing to have in prostitution.
My children would never be able to marry or have children themselves and I don't want them to look at the human body and sex as an object you sell, because it is not.
[editline]21st September 2011[/editline]
Sex is a big part of love, and that's where it should stay.

So you get to impose your morals on everyone else?
So you would deprive them of a revenue source?

What?
I don't see it like this. If prostitution was legal, they would just go there, without completely checking if there is any other source. If it is illiegal, so they would do anything to find a decent job, which isn't involved in selling your body out of no choice
Because there is nothing to have in prostitution.

You're making absolutely zero sense. What does prostitution has to do with your children marrying or not?
Sex is a big part of love, and that's where it should stay.
Water is a big part of the ocean, and that's where it should stay. So stop drinking it.
See? That doesn't make any sense either.
Did you know that it's legal to have sex for money in Sweden as long as you're filming it?
So you get to impose your morals on everyone else?
I'm not forcing my morals onto anybody by doing that. Would you get together with someone who looks at sex as an object, something she/he's shared with an innumerable ammount of people an innumerable ammount of times?
Did you know that it's legal to have sex for money in Sweden as long as you're filming it?
Yeah, that doesn't exacly make any sense and I'm not standing by that.
