What if one of the world's most popular 3D engines, the same one used to power many of the most popular console games in the world, also ran in your web browser? That would be pretty interesting, right? Things just got interesting: Epic Games has announced that their incredibly popular Unreal Engine 3 now works in Adobe Flash, demoing a version of Unreal Tournament 3 running inside the new Adobe Flash Player 11. That means porting existing games to work in a browser-based solution—and there are a ton of games on Unreal Engine 3—would be more or less turnkey. A quick look at the screenshots provided by Epic indicate that the engine isn't as powerful as a non-browser-based engine—no big surprise there—but that it's still very much a "real" 3D experience. (I haven't yet seen the engine in motion.) Even better, developers will be able to migrate their games from, say, iOS over to a browser-based environment without much hassle, making it possible to easily sell browser-based games that play the same games as apps on mobile devices. But the real thing that should make you arch an eyebrow is Facebook. Nearly every game you can play on Facebook runs on Flash. And now Flash can run hardware-accelerated 3D, just like Real Games.
Source First the Faster-Than-Speed-Of-Light thing, now this.
Counter-Strike: FB edition. Like our page to get more weps! Now you have an excuse to play games on facebook. People rating dumb: butthurt a the truth :D
I smell an Unreal Tournament: facebook edition coming soon. Still, that actually sounds pretty badass. I am hopeful that we get some cool games using this.
Why Flash and not HTML5? Flash is supposed to get phased out.
Why Flash and not HTML5? Flash is supposed to get phased out.
Won't happen for a long time, simply because of how prolific its use is.
Why Flash and not HTML5? Flash is supposed to get phased out.
Maybe Adobe are "friends" with Epic?
Why Flash and not HTML5? Flash is supposed to get phased out.
WebGL?
WebGL?
Being part of the whole HTML5 concept, yeah.
I wish that this was done in WebGL.
http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1130128 Also has some demo's on it
Basically the Unreal Engine compiled with Adobe Alchemy. (performance decrease is 2-10 times depending on the operations)
Glad to see epic and adobe teaming up. Facebook is still shit so we don't care.
Epic games is one of my favorites. Good to see them doing very well for themselves.
Counter-Strike: FB edition. Like our page to get more weps! Oh, this sounds like it will be slow as hell.
I was looking forward to seeing flash get phased out, so that Adobe could start working on some new stuff. Oh well,
I was looking forward to seeing flash get phased out, so that Adobe could start working on some new stuff. Oh well,
Nothing wrong with Flash imo. And this HTML5 thing will take some time before it even comes close to matching Flash.
I was looking forward to seeing flash get phased out, so that Adobe could start working on some new stuff. Oh well,
You can take the Flash out of Adobe but you can't take the Macromedia out of Flash
Yep, Flash got nothin' on this.
Quakelive? So what. I played it before and it ran great, but it's been out for a couple years now. I don't think flash has anything to worry about. It's all about popularity, demand, knowledge on how to use it, and whether or not there is an easier way to do what you want to do. Right now Flash has all of that. Not saying HTML5 will never beat flash, it's just too young at the moment is all.
Quake live is one of the few free games i actually enjoyed without paying. Hope this will be simular.
Problem with super-duper cool graphics in browser games: Jesus, the fucking load times on first start, fuck. Downloading 45mb to play a game isn't too bad on my home connection, but anything slower than what I have at home... Just tried the driving game demo. 5FPS. Chrome 16 + Flash 11.
Counter-Strike: FB edition. Like our page to get more weps! Now you have an excuse to play games on facebook. People rating dumb: butthurt a the truth :D
Thats funny, i thought Counter strike was developed by valve, and uses their source engine.
aw sick now i can play 50 cent: blood on the sand in ie!
Just like Real Games
That part made me LOL
So...a steaming piece of shit?
Mommy, I bought Minecraft and now it runs like shit! And everything looks really good! Almost real! And now my web browser crashed!
Counter-Strike: FB edition. Like our page to get more weps! Now you have an excuse to play games on facebook. People rating dumb: butthurt a the truth :D
There's so many things wrong in this post.
UE3 is truely an amazingly adaptable engine. First, amazing graphics on PC and the consoles, then a future release on ipods, and now flash based.
Yep, Flash got nothin' on this.
That's just a plugin that loads the game as a regular executable.
