With a goal and an assist to his name Charles Aranzguiz led the Chileans on paper but it really was a team effort from La Roja that dismantled Spain. Things began in the 15th minute when Diego Costa dribbled his way into the box only to mis-hit his shot low and wide of the far post. Andres Iniesta collected it and served it back in where Xabi Alonso emerged unmarked only for his point-blank shot to be well saved by Claudio Bravo. Five minutes later and the high press of Chile paid off. After Claudio Bravo‘s long ball to midfield, Xabi Alonso had his back-pass intercepted by Alexis Sanchez, who quickly found Arturo Vidal on the one-two pass and then brilliantly split the Spain defense to find Charles Aranzguiz, who cut a pass to the back post for Eduardo Vargas. Iker Casillas challenged, Vargas pivoted to the right and dispatched low to score from 6 yards out. 1-0 Chile. With Spain controlling possession things went back and forth for the next 20 minutes before Chile were awarded a free-kick 25 yards outside of Spain’s box in the 43rd minute. Sanchez’ free-kick was punched by Casillas into the middle of the box where Aranzguiz stood and hit a one-time, outside-of-the-foot stab that Casillas couldn’t save and Chile doubled their lead. Casillas’ decision to punch the ball was a bizarre one, adding to his long list of woes in this cup. At halftime, Koke was introduced for Xabi Alonso and the Atletico Madrid man had an immediate effect on the match. After intercepting a pass down the right side he found Iniesta who slipped a beautiful ball through Chile’s defense only for Diego Costa to be let down by his touch once again. In the 52nd minute a Sergio Ramos free-kick was punched out by Bravo and the ball bounced to Costa to bicycle a cross across the box to an unmarked Sergio Busquets, who missed an open goal from two yards out. Spain continued to press but had nothing to show for it. It took until the 64th minute for Vincente del Bosque to have seen enough from the out-of-sorts Diego Costa, who was taken off in favor of Fernando Torres. In the 68th minute, Vargas broke down the right side and his cross found Eugenio Meno to rip a shot across the goal where a sliding Mauricio Isla strikes his shot over the bar from three yards out. Seven minutes later it was Sanchez dazzling through the Spanish box and making it all the way to the by-line but his pull-back was unable to find Gutierrez or Isla. Despite sloppy play and looking a shell of their former selves, Spain continued to press forward with substitute Santi Cazorla, on for Pedro, ripping a left-footed effort inches wide from 20 yards out. With five minutes remaining a flurry of decent chances ensued for Del Bosque’s men including a Cazorla free-kick that Bravo did well to push wide and a Sergio Ramos flailing side-volley that flew over the bar.
http://prosoccertalk.nbcsports.com/2014/06/18/spain-eliminated-from-2014-world-cup-as-chile-cruises-to-2-0-victory/ :v:
Tiki taka is finally dead!
RIP 5pa1n
When you play THAT badly, you kind of deserve it.
I'm glad that this happened.
They got beaten so badly that their King is abdicating in shame
And now Chile must face the fury of a thousand suns that is the Dutch.
I really want a sub-par team to face off against Brazil and win. Mexico tied them which is hilarious enough.
The Cameroon Croatia match in less than an hour will boot the next team out.
Glad we don't have to pay the expensive bonuses they get with every match/tournament win
I'm laughing at this but I'm worried England could do the same. Would be some cruel payback for laughing if they do go out in the group stages.
RIP 5pa1n
Why not sum all the goals? 7PA1N makes more sense vocally. (S-even)
YES YES YES
Yay, my people have won!
Why not sum all the goals? 7PA1N makes more sense vocally. (S-even)
eh..
that was fast, I expected spain to last longer
I can't have been the only person who saw Barcelona's dethroning in European football as a good reason that Spain would do badly this year. Tika taka has met its match and now the Germans/Dutch rule. I bet by 2018 there will be another club/nation as the next dominant force.
what's the joke with calling spain 5pa1n?
I am honestly astonished Spain were eliminated before us. I thought we'd score 1 goal for the whole thing at max.
what's the joke with calling spain 5pa1n?
5-1
I am honestly astonished Spain were eliminated before us. I thought we'd score 1 goal for the whole thing at max.
Well to be fair Australia was eliminated before Spain (AUS v NED was before the Spain game). Just this is making news because Spain is ranked #1 (plus they were the holders of last world cup) What I mean by that is that Australia doesn't have enough points to progress even if they win the last group game against Spain (Hence Australia and Spain are eliminated).
Holy shit has Spain had its head up its ass this entire cup. its like they got to the very top and said "fuck it im not doing it again" and proceeded to watch cat videos for 90 minutes.
Watch as Portugal goes through the same exact path next sunday.
big deal
Spain will always be #1 in my heart.
How Australia wasn't worse in that group amazes me. We actually nearly beat the Netherlands.
"We".
Jeez fine. "I" nearly beat the Netherlands.
They even gave them SIX minutes of overtime. Six fucking minutes. Everyone was joking that was almost a lifetime
