So this is for Linux systems only then? Or no?
So this is for Linux systems only then? Or no?
it is a linux system
I wonder if I could Dual boot this on my laptop. I'll wait and see others try it first. [editline]12th December 2013[/editline] Actually, are there Virtual machines that support Linux?
it is a linux system
Correct me if I'm wrong again here but. Would installing it replace my Vista OS? [sp]I'm not too knowledgeable on PC customization.[/sp]

[editline]12th December 2013[/editline] Actually, are there Virtual machines that support Linux?
I've tried Microsoft's virtual machine, (only really got it to work well using singularity OS and that's because it was a MS operating system), it's not so great. People say VMware is good which I don't disagree, but I personally use oracle's virtualbox because I'm cheep and don't care for performance. There's probably going to be thread somewhere in FP that will address this linux distro when it comes out. Edit: opps, typo on vmwave. I meant to say it's good software
I'm curious if it's like debian or like arch, what if it's completely custom :\o but I doubt that.
Correct me if I'm wrong again here but. Would installing it replace my Vista OS? [sp]I'm not too knowledgeable on PC customization.[/sp]
you can probably dual boot so you can have both OS's at the same time - that's what I'd recommend
This is important:
However, Valve advises to "wait until later in 2014" to try the OS "unless you're an intrepid Linux hacker already," suggesting the initial release of SteamOS won't necessarily be mainstream-friendly.
Also, I wouldn't run it in a VM if you intend to actually play games. Getting hardware acceleration working in a VM is usually either a huge pain in the ass, or glitchy as hell.
I wouldn't mind dual-booting it with my Windows 7. I've never dual booted before though so I'll have to do some research and see how people do it with SOS.

I dunno if VMware server is still free but even if its not player is more than sufficient for pretty much every normal use of it (if you can find someone to create you the required files, or use one of those tools that does it).
If they've done things to minimize input latency, I'm thinking this will be a good os for music production, am I right? Edit: Dumb rating without an explantion nice.
I hope it has streaming, that's literally all I want to try.
I wonder if Valve could actually make SteamOS something worth switching over to from Windows 7.
I wonder if Valve could actually make SteamOS something worth switching over to from Windows 7.
Unlikely if you are using a desktop.
They are almost releasing an early build already, and I have no idea as to what features it'll include (other than game streaming which is kinda useless unless you have another powerful PC). Wonder what they'll do to make SteamOS different.
Correct me if I'm wrong again here but. Would installing it replace my Vista OS? [sp]I'm not too knowledgeable on PC customization.[/sp]
Partition your hard disk in two, install the system and use EasyBCD to add it to the windows boot options so you can choose which system you want to use on boot.
I wonder if Valve could actually make SteamOS something worth switching over to from Windows 7.
I'm optimistic about the future and I think that what Valve is trying to do here. Since they dislike the direction Windows 8 has taken, they are trying to nudge people towards a more open system. I feel like they could cause it to become a viable alternative through increased native support in more games and applications, which is nice considering the OS itself is much less bloated, faster and takes up hella less RAM. All its lacking is universal support.
Holy shit! I'm going to go and buy a HDD tomorrow and format it, ready for install. Woohoo.

The 13th of December? Knowing valve, that would be December 2015.
