NOTE: Sorry for the image quality. DSLR took a shit on me the day we explored, so we had to revert to ye olde iPhones. It was also a poorly lit day and we were in a bit of a rush to see the whole thing, so not our best photo work here.
Explored an abandoned cement plant outside of St. Louis a week or two ago. It was abandoned a good while back, then bought by artist Bob Cassilly (creator of the City Museum in STL, if any of you have been/seen it - great place). Cassilly was killed in 2011 when his bulldozer rolled down a hill at the cement factory, which we was working on converting into a public art exhibit (hence the name Cementland). The place has been pretty much in disrepair since then. We did find a few documents that gave evidence that someone had tried (and failed) to clean it up in 2012.

We entered via a set of railroad tracks that bypassed the fence. About five minutes after we got off the tracks, a massive train sped through. Turns out they were still in use.

Overview of Cementland. Excludes two or three buildings to the left.

This was taken about halfway up the catwalks leading to the top of the silos in the previous picture. All the walkways were rusted to hell and an entire portion of the structure (seen here) has rusted out and collapsed.

Taken a little above the collapsed portion. It was a solid 150-200 feet down beneath the catwalk my friend is standing on here.

Where one of the collapsed portions landed.

Me descending into the basement of a manufacturing facility.

In the basement. The entire floor was submerged in 7 or 8 feet of water, which had subsequently frozen to ice in the cold depths of the basement. It was very eery looking at all the rusted machines and equipment frozen under 7 feet of ice beneath our feet. The catwalk in the image just descended beneath the ice and into darkness.

Me adjusting a timer in the basement. Swag.

Another shot from the basement.

Funny? Creepy? I dunno.

Box of checks we found next to the monkey. All were for over 2 grand. Most written by Bob Cassilly himself for the construction of Cementland.

Unintentionally artsy photo of me walking across an I-beam to the massive smokestack in the middle of the plant. Didn't have the balls to climb it.

The smokestack.

Accidentally creepy picture of me coming back from a piss break.

Massive stirring arms in one of the concrete silos. Easily 100 feet tall.

The second image in this post was taken from the fourth floor of a massive factory. Some loading ramps inside that building.

Electrical box in the factory building.

Frozen water pouring out of a drain. The water on the floor was several feet deep easily, but was frozen solid.

Some very fitting graffiti on a chalkboard.
Looks sick!
Did you find any other signs of activity there or just the train?
Not much, really. The surrounding railyards and scrapyards were still in use, but the plant itself was largely derelict.
That just looks incredible
Thanks! I was hella lucky to find it at all. Hopefully I can find a few other places nearby too.
