Still happening ATM [release]An 18-year-old Sydney schoolgirl is caught up in a horrifying bomb scare tonight after a balaclava-clad man entered a Mosman house and reportedly placed a device on her this afternoon. Police said they were treating the device as live until they knew otherwise. Bomb squad officers had been inside inside the Burrawong Avenue home examining the suspicious device and supporting the teenager. In a statement issued at 7pm, police said the process "demands a high-level of skill and must be meticulous". As the incident entered its sixth hour, a bomb disposal expert in full body protection was seen outside the home. Photo: Brendan Esposito "We are treating the device as live until we know otherwise," assistant commisioner Mark Murdoch said. Earlier police said they were not treating the case as self-harm. Police have refused to confirm reports that a ransom note was left on the girl with the device. Photo: Ben Rushton The drama started when the girl, who was home alone when the man entered the house, phoned police about 2.30pm. Police have cordoned off the house and closed several nearby streets. Some homes have also been evacuated and police are urging people to stay away from the area. Police are appealing for help and anyone who noticed suspicious activity around the home or on Burrawong Avenue this afternoon should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Holy shit?
This is a developing story, the bomb is a collar. The girl has one of Australias richest families. The assailant is wearing a mask. EDIT: IT's the type of collar bomb you see in movies.
Wonder what whoever is behind this wants to do exactly.
This is pretty scary, there really haven't been any kind of bomb threat type things in Australia for atleast 20 years or so. Though the port arthur massacre was horrible.

My cousin goes to her school and is in her year. She says that there is a ransom but I'm not sure if that's just a rumour. Edit: Just found out my brother is at the same school and is in the same year as one of her brothers.

police conference in 10 minutes
Holy fuck, this girl is a year younger than me. I can't imagine how terrifying this would be. "A senior police police officer described the device as an unusual "collar bomb" which has never been seen before in Australia." ...So basically they have no actual experience with these type of devices; that's comforting.
Guy that did that went to my school. Aparently he was messed in the head.
Well no shit, Sherlock.
This is pretty scary, there really haven't been any kind of bomb threat type things in Australia for atleast 20 years or so.
There have been a planned attacks in the last decade, the sydney five and the lucas reactor, and others e.g. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) reported it had 76 new counter-terrorism cases to investigate in the 2006-7 financial year, and they finalised another 83 cases. As of 30 June 2006, the AFP had 83 cases being actively examined by its counter-terrorism unit. [editline]3rd August 2011[/editline] I'm rather interested in what family she is from. I suppose it will inevitably come out, though.

I wonder what kind of trigger mechanism was used, as all the remote-detonation methods I can think of aren't the safest. It would be rather difficult to collect a random if the bomb was unable to be activated, or was activated prematurely. The only thing I could think of would be a dead-man switch radio signal (which obviously would go off in the event of jamming), but that is risky (if the signal was interrupted), and besides, the signal can be detected and used to determine the location of the transmitter. Based on that, I suppose a ransom seems unlikely due to the technical difficulties. We'll see soon enough. [editline]3rd August 2011[/editline] That being said, obviously I'm not some kind of bomb expert (probably wouldn't be free if that were the case).

Oh wow...I really really do hope this ends well...
I'm pretty sure I saw a movie about this once.
Yes they make movies about things that haven't happened yet.
Then i guess you have to hand to our police in that they've been keeping the country pretty safe.
Not necessarily. I mean, Australia's not exactly a politically charged country, or anything; there's very little reason for most Australians to bomb something. In America, for example, there are far, far more people (and arguably more reason for said people to bomb something, at least in terms of the country's collective psyche inasmuch as one exists), and therefore, statistically, it makes sense that some people are going to get lucky and pull a bomb attack off successfully.
oh dear god
I read what you said, saw the picture and I saw the yellow spot and thought it was an explosion and I felt really, really bad. Than I figured out what the joke was.
Guy that did that went to my school. Aparently he was messed in the head.
He actually is stuffed up in the head - he has a sub 70 IQ as well as getting a pension for having mental health issues
Yes they make movies about things that haven't happened yet.
It's Battle Royal I was thinking of, and this is hardly a unique case either.
