My father owns one, my brother owns one, my uncle used to own one, and I'm planning on owning one. I have yet to hear bad things about these cars.
I can only hope to find a nice one someday, but I've already got my first two cars planned out.
One of my favorite cars. Too bad they're so damn expensive.

A couple issues, but...eh I'd probably buy it.
Great car, I drive one.
I had a 1987 318i. Bought it for 850 euros. It had Great handling, sharp looks, it was easy to maintain and got good mileage. I drove mine to Moscow and back and I would never even consider such a trip without a car I could trust. If you want one you definitely should get one.
They're cool cars, but they're getting a bit long in the tooth. As with all older European cars, be prepared to stay on top of maintenance or suffer the consequences. If you can, you'll be rewarded with a very sweet handling car.
That said I think prices for them are increasing because people are realizing the worth of them. I dunno if it's worth it to buy a 20 year old car for 4000 bucks.
I've got a 1988 320i which I bought in 2008 as my first car and I've never had ANY problems with it except for... the wipers making noise. I've done an M52B28 engine swap last year along with an LSD and a few other bits. It's got a factory M-Technik suspension and it still handles like a dream after 23 years and 220000km of use. The only real problem with those cars is rust.
And that when something goes wrong you pay out the ass for it

Well except for maintenance issues due to the car being old and possibly mistreated during it's lifetime.

Although they are killer cars. BMW's best era imo.

Depends on where you live obviously. Parts here are really cheap.

No shit it's cheap, you live in Germany. These cars are pretty rare here in the US and very expensive to maintain.

not entirely true, i frequent a BMW forum based in america, there seems to be quite a few, and a lot of people who do everything themselves, and for not much money.

That's why I said "Depends on where you live", not everyone on FP lives in North America.
