Yes, yo-yos.
Lets start with the basic idea here: The yo-yo is a toy consisting of two equally sized but not specifically equally weighted pieces of plastic, wood, or metal, connected with an axle, with a string looped around the axle.
Yoyos have spawned a sport, usually called yo-yoing. There is a cult following of it, especially in Japan.
NOT ALL YO-YOs ARE EQUAL:
Unless you're just buying to play with it like normal (boring), you need to pay attention because there are multiple makes and models of yoyos.
The Imperial

Named after the famous Duncan, imperial-shaped yoyos are popular for 2a yoyoing. (see below)
Modified Imperial:

Obviously, this a slightly modified imperial shape. These are also good 2a yoyos.
Butterfly:

Also named after a Duncan yoyo, this shape is used for 1a, 3a, and 5a.
Wing:

Similar to butterfly, but used for 4a.
What's with the A's?
Yo-yoing is broken down into 5 different branches. 1a, 2a, 3a, 4a, and 5a.
1a:

This style is defined by using "sleeping' yoyos. This means the yoyo is spinning on its axle at the bottom of the string. This is the style most people think of when yoyoing is mentioned. Butterfly-shaped yo-yos are most used in this style.
2a:

This particular branch of yo-yoing is defined by it's use of 'looping' tricks. 1a and 2a are the most opposite styles of yoyo, 1a needing an unresponsive yoyo, 2a needing a very responsive yoyo. Therefore, 1a and 2a yoyos show the most difference, using butterfly and modified imperial respectively.
3a:

Simply put, 3a is the use of 2 yoyos, performing 1a tricks with both hands.
4a:

4a, or "offstring" yoyoing is simply using a yoyo without it being attached to the string.
5a:

5a brings in the use of a counterweight, rather than the yoyo being attached to the hand. This allows the player to manipulate both the yoyo and the counterweight, leading to some interesting tricks.
Alright, I'll add more later.
all i could do was walk the dog

I used to yo alot a few years ago. Don't do it as much today but I still have all my yoyos and sometimes I break a trick or two. My favourite yos are the Hitman and Sirius. Both YoYoJam. BigYo is also a heck lot of fun to mess around with.

Two of them (green and transparent), but with Freehand 2 caps.
I have a $100 Fast 401 PPK (the limited edition 401k)
Duncan Imperials = the fucking shit.
I used to do Around the World a million fucking times every day with that thing.
Proyo is far better.

lol wooden bearing
lol wooden bearing
Ahh fixed axles.. I hate them. I only use string made of 50% cotton and 50% polyester. The polyester will melt from the friction and boom the string will snap!
I still remember the day I got my first ball bearing yoyo.
I picked up my yo-yo for like 8 bux at walmart
holy shit you got ripped off, they're like 1 dollar anywhere else
I got given a yoyo when I went for a job interview at Lionhead ages ago.
Sadly, I broke it a few months later :(
Yo-Yo's kick ass.
I found my mega old yo yo a few weeks back (super dooper spinners!), tried it, broke the string, can't be bothered to fix.
Yo-Yo's kick ass.
They're so amazingly nerdy and introverted that they're practically ironic to even look at

When you don't use one properly. :saddowns:
Where is that guy who modified a cell phone into a Yo-Yo ?
I think my Yo-Yo is broken.
It goes down but not back up.
I was sooo goddamn close to buying this. World record holder, sold out, stopped production.
