The number of US households signing up to online video subscription services such as Netflix has grown by 4%, at the expense of premium pay-TV channels like HBO and Showtime.
Subscriptions to pay-TV channels fell by 6%, according to an NPD Group report on viewing behaviour between March 2012 and August 2013.
A third of American homes paid to watch premium TV channels in August 2013.
The number of homes signed up to streaming services had risen to 27%.
The study also found that seven out of 10 films and TV shows were watched through on-demand services - including subscription firms like Netflix and Amazon Prime, or as a feature from a cable provider like HBO Go - instead of being rented or bought from Apple's iTunes or Walmart's Vudu.
Because premium channels are horrendous. we paying an extra 80$ on the cable bill for some movie channels that have a slow as fuck movie rotation. Meanwhile Netflix have an assload more movies and TV shows. Most people who have a digital TV around here outright got rid of cable and just use hulu, netflix, youtube, and the Internet instead of cable.
Now if only the entertainment industry would stop money-grubbing and provide content on Netflix so users could just have everything with one subscription and not have to resort to piracy because EVERY company wants to keep their programs for their own subscription-based services
But who am I kidding
Classic cable tv is outdated in pretty much everything. Good to see it die out.
I'm considering ditching my cable package and going solely with Netflix + Internet. The price isn't what gets me, though it is a pretty hefty price. What really irks me is that I'm forced to pay for shitloads of channels I'd never watch. Oh, you want to watch the Science Channel and HBO? Those channels are only available in our SUPREME ULTRA DELUXE SPORTS MEGAPACKAGE for an introductory cost of 149.95 a month*! We'll even throw in religious and Spanish language channels ABSOLUTELY FREE*! Not to mention our incredible ONE HUNDRED CHANNELS OF HD 1080P MUSIC!
I just wish Networks would offer some form of a la carte service on Netflix. For example, basic Netflix service would be the regular 8(?) dollars it is now, but then if you wanted you could add on HBO for another 10-15 dollars a month. HBO already has their own private streaming site that uploads shows the day after the TV premiers, I don't see why doing a similar paid service on Netflix would be difficult.
I'd gladly pay more for Netflix if that mean't getting decent stuff.
Canadian Netflix subscriptions would soar if they'd put more than 2 movies and 1 season of 1 show on there.
I pretty much subsist off of Netflix + Vudu. If it's not on either; I'll wait.
As per TV; it's a total joke now. I get better news on my computer. And the one time I tried to watch the new season of The Walking Dead on my TV - there were so many commercials that I was losing track of what little bits of show I was allowed to watch. I think there were actually more commercials than show. Fuck that.
Of course it is. People are tired of the bullshit that cable companies like to go through.
Netflix makes watching whatever movies they want EXTREMELY convenient considering its on every conceivable platform in existence. Cell phones, consoles, PCs, hell, even handhelds like vita and 3DS are benefiting from it.
Plus, you even get none of the bullshit commercials. All for...what? $8 a month? I call that a win win for the consumer.

I jumped the netflix ship and use hulu plus now. Netflix can't keep up with content, and even some companies are pulling content off to hulu.
wait... subscriptions?
you mean people will PAY for things, instead of evilishly pirating them while eating babies???
THAT CAN'T BE POSSIBLE!!! WHAT ARE WE GOING TO TELL OUR BOSS NOW?!??
I've found some decent shit on Netflix but honestly not enough to keep me coming back to it. I feel like they need to be much more aggressive in getting new and exciting content on the platform in order to be a viable alternative to paid television.
Commercials drove me to my PC.
I'd be fine if they ran 20 minutes of commercials between TV shows, but they know people would get up and use the bathroom, find some food, and ignore them, then sit back down for the show. So instead they take your hour long show, strategically break it up into chunks to be interrupted with commercials. So many that your hour long show is actually only 40 minutes, with the rest filled with people spending a million dollars to try and get us to spend a million and one, and it's starting to just get completely out of hand.
Like during the Broncos game on Sunday. 4 minutes of commercials, it came back for the kickoff. The football landed out of bounds in the back so it was a touchback. Instantly back to commercials. It was commercials with a 20 second football break, all in the name of greed
I just can't stand it, it's annoying. I already pay out the ass for cable to watch this shit, put the commercials on a separate channel or something. Fuck me
My cable provider, Brighthouse, is all digital now, so when I switched from Knology/Wow!(they charged too much for 10mb downloads and no cable boxes or phones), and Brighthouse brought and set up their digital cable box, it blew my fuckin' MIND.
Watching Adventure Time in glorious 1080p HD is amazing, and it astounds me that apparently it's(digital cable stuff) been around for a while.
As for netflix, it has lots of shows and stuff, but it's not up to date. Using Adventure Time again as an example, it's seasons behind. I'd definitely give up cable for it if it wasn't for the fact it doesn't air at the same time as cable shows.
Netflix (in the UK) reminds me of Steam a few years ago where whenever a game came out everyone was like "I hope the devs put this game on Steam" and it was still kind of exciting when a new big publisher started putting their games on there.
Nowadays it's surprising when a game isn't on Steam. I hope Netflix is like that in a few years.
I stopped using Netflix after breaking bad ended. I play too many video games to watch movies/shows.
I'm interested in finding out what effect Netflix and Lovefilm streaming are having on Pay TV over here (In particularly Sky) and whether it will be a permanent downward trend.
It's official. cable television is going to go up in smoke. Unless they can provide a better service, there is no way cable networks can compete with the internet. They better do this quick before Netflix becomes global and totally mainstream.
I can almost feel the shareholders sweating.
Personally I'm pleased that Cable is finally starting to fall into the pit, the literal/metaphorical monopoly they have is outright horrendous.
However, I've always had Dish Network :v:

why don't you bypass that?
it's done with like 2 clicks installing some extension.
Good, normal TV is absolute garbage.
We saw a film that we have on DVD about to be played, so we decided to watch the DVD, then see how much of the film is left on cable to judge the amount of adverts.
There was about 65 minutes of adverts in a 120 minute film.
Sod these cable companies.
I like that HBO and such are taking a cue from Netflix and adding online streaming services with their subscriptions, but they should really separate their services. I'd happily pay for online streaming only.
TV is awful, the only thing I ever stop and watch as I see it is the news or a film that I REALLY enjoy. Other than that I can just go and look it up online
I miss the days where i went to Discovery Channel to learn about science and cool shit, National Geographic for awesome nature stuff and MTV for all these crazy music videos.
Seems everything turned into a reality show..
I just have my Wii in the living room with Netflix, Hulu Plus, and youtube. Also picked up a digital antenna for like $2 to get local news and the standard non-cable channels for free. It just doesn't make sense anymore to pay an arm an a leg for cable/satellite when you only watch a few channels. Television killed radio, the internet will kill television.
I do wish Netflix would update their shows more often, but I expect it to get better over time.

Discovery is still mostly untouched, its channels like TLC that have hit the pits with reality shows. (I miss shows like Junkyard Wars, or Scrapheap Challenge for everyone in the UK)
national Geographic "brain games" is super informative and interesting.
Literally the only good show that isn't reality on there.
Too bad its never on. Gotta make room for Yardsale rednecks in Alaska!
My favorite History program is modern marvels and that is never on anymore either.

Discovery has gone down hill too, just not to the extent that TLC has. Its only a matter of time before discovery becomes "D channel" and has nothing but soccer mom shows.
Got 6 month netflix for free when I bought my new tv right after Christmas. Not activated yet but I will see how I like it. The only minus I know about netflix (if I don't missed anything) is live sports. Still need to buy some other service but the price is not that fun.

Modern Marvels was one of the best engineering shows on History, now its only reruns sadly (Then again they covered quite a bit of ground throughout their run).
But you've got a point, sadly they axed shows like Prototype This! (Which was wildly informative, fun and imaginative). Even if Mythbusters is still around, the quantity of good shows has gone down.
