A leading psychologist has warned that young men are facing a crisis of masculinity due to excessive use of video games and pornography.
Psychologist and professor emeritus at Stanford University Phillip Zimbardo has made the warnings, which form a major part of his latest book, Man (Dis)Connected.
In an interview on the BBC World Service's Weekend programme, Zimbardo spoke about the results of his study, an in-depth look into the lives of 20,000 young men and their relationships with video games and pornography.
He said: "Our focus is on young men who play video games to excess, and do it in social isolation - they are alone in their room."
"Now, with freely available pornography, which is unique in history, they are combining playing video games, and as a break, watching on average, two hours of pornography a week."
Zimbardo says there is a "crisis" amongst young men, a high number of whom are experiencing a "new form of addiction" to excessive use of pornography and video games.
Zimbardo gave a TED talk in 2011 outlining the problems facing young men's social development and academic achievement, which he puts down to excessive use of porn, video games and the internet.
He cited the example of a mother he met while conducting the study whose son does not see the problem in playing video games for up to 15 hours a day.
Zimbardo said: "For me, 'excess' is not the number of hours, it's a psychological change in mindset."
Giving an example of the mindset of a gaming and pornography-addicted young man, he says: "When I'm in class, I'll wish I was playing World of Warcraft. When I'm with a girl, I'll wish I was watching pornography, because I'll never get rejected."
Zimbardo claims that this relatively new phenomenon is affecting the minds of young men.

I for sure wish I was at home jerking it to Brazzers when I interact with women.

And playing GTA killing a hooker at the same time
Maybe if humans were nice and not judgemental assholes when there teenagers that wouldn't happen.
When I'm in class, I'll wish I was playing World of Warcraft
Is there something wrong with that? I haven't seen many people who'd rather be in class than doing something else.

Grow some fucking balls. That's why there's a "masculinity crisis". Some boys never grow up.
two hours of pornography a week.
Pff, amateurs.
Women are already obsolete now that it's possible to enter the 2nd dimension
Seriously, fuck this guy. That's not why there's a "Crisis of Masculinity".
There's a crisis of masculinity due to our society's flawed view of men and how men are supposed to act; suppressing emotions, 'manning up', that sort of thing. Our view of masculinity is harmful to boys growing up, adult men, and yes even women. A good example of this is the John Oliver bit on Paid Family Leave that was posted in the Videos section. In it, two sports casters berated a Baseball Player for daring to take his measly 3 days of family leave to be with his new born son instead of playing Baseball, saying that baseball is more important than being a father. Shit like that is the real crisis of masculinity.
I've seen Zimbardo at a conference years ago while studying Psychology. Cool guy.
I'd say he's either right or wrong depending on what you judge 'masculinity' to be. The example given just seems to be too specific and in the minority. You shouldn't have a sample of one anyway, but that aside, most would want to do anything than be in class, and that rejection statement is about self esteem. There are way more reasons for low self esteem than video games and pornography.
This guy is just scared of the Waifu Age
There's going to be a lot of us claiming he's wrong but recall two things:
1. A lot of us are pretty biased, myself included;
2. This guy's got a PhD in Psychology and has been for a long time-- he knows his stuff, so let's not disregard it too easily.

What's your addiction? Is it porn? Is it video games?

with VR coming up, we might face our own lost generation, but instead of a horrifying war which sent millions into a meatgrinder for little to no reason and absolutely wrecked the psychological health of those who survived, its anime tittays and lotion
Pfft, masculinity is overrated anyways.

You'll get it when your a old fuck. I have no problem with balls, I get off on hurting people. Hell the thought of getting with a women well she has a gun pointed at my head turns me on.
I'm just a little extremely fucked up in the head, that's why I decided to become the many.

Just because someone has a PhD, doesn't mean they are automaticly right.
Just like with that doctor who claims that smartphones are damaging our brains with electromagnetic radiation
whose son does not see the problem in playing video games for up to 15 hours a day.
Of course the study only looks at casual players
the Stanford prison experiment was some highly wack shit. i don't feel it adds any credibility to his thesis. it was a test that ran completely off-rails and nearly killed a couple people. crazy but informative research
Pfft, masculinity is overrated anyways.
Same with femininity
Same with femininity
Hell no, I like my women feminine.
Of course the study only looks at casual players
How many gamers actually play that amount every day?
In it, two sports casters berated a Baseball Player for daring to take his measly 3 days of family leave to be with his new born son instead of playing Baseball, saying that baseball is more important than being a father. I don't understand how that's related to masculinity though.
Hell no, I like my women feminine.
Just like women like their men masculine

Wouldn't masculinity relate more to being a fatherfigure? Like being with your newborn son?
Maybe he has a wrong definition of masculinity
I don't understand how that's related to masculinity though.
Fatherhood isn't important to being a man (our society's view of masculinity), but rather playing sports and doing your job is. Those sports casters don't believe him being a father is important at all.
Just like women like their men masculine
And there's nothing bad there

Whoa that's the view of your society? I'm not american but this is the first time I hear this
I don't understand how that's related to masculinity though.
Because society is putting all this pressure on men to be "masculine" which means suppressing their own emotions and that it's ok to be violent and angry because that's the way we're supposed to be. I could go on and on about it but this is the kind of thing you spend a few days on in a sociology course

Last I checked if you're not a good dad you're called a deadbeat loser, not a macho man

NOW THAT'S EDGY!
On another note, what I'm less sure of is exactly what his definition of masculinity is. Does it relate to young guys not wanting to get with girls? Like, what is even the definition of masculinity here? Is the crisis that there's too little of it? That the masculinity has been perverted somehow? Hell, there are certain pundits out there which would argue that there's too much masculinity in american culture and entertainment! The crisis of masculinity part, despite being a major part of the headline, seems woefully underdeveloped in the article, and it comes across instead as just another article about addiction to videogames and electronics, and I mean everything should be taken in moderation, but it's not exactly groundbreaking to say that there are a lot of young people addicted to technology and that it's bad.
Personally, I'm in this weird state that I've been in since I hit puberty where I experience sexual attraction but feel not romantic desire to form a relationship. There's no childish resentment of women or fear of rejection in there, I'm sure that I could probably get a girlfriend if I tried, it's just... I don't see the point! There are a million other things that I'd rather spend my time on, with classes, programming, videogames, and hanging out with my friends pretty high up on the list.
Just because someone has a PhD, doesn't mean they are automaticly right.
No, it doesn't-- but it does significantly increase the chances.
I'm just saying that people should be careful with disregarding his claims and acting as if they know better than someone who researches this kinda stuff for a living.
Whoa that's the view of your society? I'm not american but this is the first time I hear this
What Dr. C said. Men in American society are generally not expected to be emotional, and stuff like that. Fatherhood isn't valued nearly as much as motherhood (they're both extremely important) because raising kids is a woman's job, being a stay at home dad isn't a career, if you do that you're not a real man.
The sportscaster bit is at about 5:30

Hearing them say that made me legit sick to my stomach. I'm someone who wants to be a father, and would gladly give up my dream career to raise a family or even be a stay at home dad if necessary and hearing them say that hurt.
