WATCH THE VIDEO FIRST
A police dash cam video contains audio of an officer who fatally shoots a man from Vancouver Island in Seattle last summer. The video, released on a Washington state judge's order on Friday, shows John Williams, 50, a woodcarver, crossing a street in Seattle with a knife and chunk of wood. He exits the frame, then audio is heard of officer Ian Birk yelling at Williams three times to put down the knife, before five rapid gunshots are fired. Right after the shooting, Birk is heard telling a passerby the man had a knife and wouldn't drop it. When backup officers arrive, Birk tells them he had the "knife open." The shooting occurs off screen and it is unclear what level of threat Williams posed. Williams, a carver at Seattle's popular tourist area Pike Place Market, died at the scene Aug. 30 from four shots to the chest. A friend of Williams said he was deaf in one ear and likely did not hear the officer's demands to put down the seven-centimetre blade. Protests of the shooting have been held in B.C. Birk, 27, was ordered to surrender his gun and badge. An inquest is scheduled for Jan. 20.
:saddowns: I hate it when a sheriff starts tantruming. Always goes after the Miners or Woodcutters first, and there's no one to punish, stop, or imprison him.
sounds perfectly reasonable
wow... don't even know what to say. this is pretty disturbing shit
sounds perfectly reasonable
WHAT sorry I'm deaf
Trigger happy cop, fire him, send him to prison for murder, basically. Normally I'd say deaf in one ear doesn't mean deaf in both but it doesn't seem like he gave him enough time to react, and five bullets is way too much. Your job as a cop is to preserve life and diffuse situations, not to end it and over react. I'd say to give him a second chance in the military but come on, seriously? Five fucking bullets? Inb4 all cops are exactly like this guy, no, they're not. Your sheltered ass doesn't know anything of the outside world if you even think it.
shoot first ask questions later [editline]23rd December 2010[/editline] I can't believe he shot him 5 times, if it's an older dude and he has a knife + chunk of wood at the most he should have been tased

Sometimes, people just make spur of the moment decisions and unload a round into a person, then, out of panic/adrenaline, unload four more.

You cannot tell me there's better ways to defuse a situation of a drunk man with a pocket knife. Note that I'm not bashing all cops, just this guy. Once more your job as a cop is to preserve life, not end it. So if you're a cop and the first thought that enters your head to stop a drunken older man with a tiny little knife is to put 5 rounds through him you should not be a cop.

Can I really be blamed?

Not to mention the fucking arsenal of non lethals an average officer carries.
saving america one bullet at a time
I don't think this justifies it. I'm simply trying to make the cop's motives seem slightly more reasonable. Put yourself in his shoes for once. Maybe he was just strung out. Maybe he was playing Amnesia. Maybe he just went through some really tough part of his life and is not ready to deal with anyone's shit?
I like how the girl is walking, hears the shooting and jumps kinda, then continues walking.

Bull fucking horse shit
I like how the girl is walking, hears the shooting and jumps kinda, then continues walking.
She did stop..and then later on she said " Did you just shoot that guy?? he wasn't even doing anything!!" and the cop responded by saying that the guy didnt drop the knife.. its all in the video
I like how the girl is walking, hears the shooting and jumps kinda, then continues walking.
Why would she want to see someone dieing?

[editline]23rd December 2010[/editline] Just putting myself in his shoes I guess.

It really sucks, that guy probably didn't leave his house thinking "today's a nice day to be killed by a cop for doing shit-all :)"
Then he shouldn't be on the job.
Hind sight is a bitch. They didn't expect him to act like that.
As I said, spur of the moment and adrenaline.
if you easily succumb to adrenaline and knee-jerk reactions, you should not be a cop, yet alone be allowed to carry a gun in public
Wow, I can't believe that cop shot that guy to deaf in the middle of the street. I just realized this guy lived down the street from me.
Life in jail please.
If this guy was playing SWAT 4 he'd get a -50/100
If this guy was playing SWAT 4 he'd get a -50/100
dr. fishtastic inappropriately relating real life situations to video games since 2010
if you easily succumb to adrenaline and knee-jerk reactions, you should not be a cop, yet alone be allowed to carry a gun in public
Do you remember those days when you were just having a shitty time, and someone or something did something completely innocuous, and you just flipped a shit? Now, imagine you had a gun. Imagine that someone had a knife. Would the situation be any different if you were that cop (and those former two sentences' conditions had been fulfilled)?
