What is The Hunger Games?
The Hunger Games is a trilogy of books written by american writer Suzanne Collins, and are now being adapted to movies. The first one, called "The Hunger Games" was released on march 23rd worldwide to great reception.

What is this movie about?

The movie takes place in the future, in the country of Panem, that rose from the ashes after the US fall due to wars, disasters and droughts. It follows the story of Katniss Everdeen, a 16 year old girl from District 12 who volunteers to participate in the so-called "Hunger Games" to save her little sister to do so after she was picked against all odds.
The Hunger Games is a televised event in which two participants of each of the twelve districts fight to death in a wide arena while the whole country watches. It was instated by the capitol (the ruler of the districts) after these rebelled against it 75 years ago, as a way of conmemorating the rebellion and instigate fear to the districts. 24 go in, only one can come out alive.

Is it worth watching?

Very much. it was received with high acclaim from critics and public in general and holds 88% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes currently (may fluctuate). It is an entertaining film and Jennifer Lawrence performance is outstanding.

Is this the next Twilight?

I'll be happy if this has the same success as Twilight (or Harry Potter to give a more decent example) had. Though hopefully the fanbase isn't as stupid as these two movies' fanbase. (though it's already shaping up to be).

What I think
The movie is really great and it's quite faithful to the book as a movie lets you be (though they left out many details to not overcomplicate the plot, I guess). Jennifer Lawrence embraces the roll of Katniss very well and looks just like I pictured Katniss while reading the books. The pacing feels right. Though I don't like the guy they casted for Peeta a lot. The visual effects feel cheap (all of the CG stuff looks bad) and the freaking shaky cam everyone complains about.
So, what do you think about this film?
I liked it. It was pretty good and followed the books fairly well. They only thing i didnt like on it was the damn camera was always moving, it never stayed still and made it a little distracting.
Great OP
[Sp]Doesn't use movie poster, it uses a album cover of a Taylor Swift single[/sp]
I was a fan of the first book, so i'll probably be seeing this soon.
But was anyone else dissapointed with the third book? Basically [sp]Everyone died, then Katniss sort of has a mental breakdown and settles for Peeta, then does nothing much with her life.[/sp] it seemed like it could have been a bit more cheery.

those fight scenes were really ruined by it
I haven't read the books yet, but I've started the first, so my opinion doesn't exactly matter. But I liked it, and from what I've read so far, there's a few details the movie didn't go over, but it didn't necessarily have to. Also, [sp]the girl with the tracker jackers...[/sp]
I felt the movie followed the book nearly to a T. I mean the games themselves were almost a one to one copy! I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Needed more gore. I really wanted to see [sp]Clove's face get completely crushed by a rock by Thresh, especially since she went all crazy-rape-murder on Katniss.[/sp]
Yea, I was disappointed when [sp]she shot the guy who speared Rue. In the book it describes how it pegs his neck, but he rips it out, doubling the already bad bloodflow and halving his already short 10 seconds of remaining life. In the movie it was just "*thud* im ded"[/sp]

i think this is how they got away with the pg-13 rating
and yeah i liked the movie quite a bit. they had to skip a lot to cram it into a movie, but what was there was very faithful.
Does it live up to the books? I really enjoyed the book series, I dont wanna see this if it totally butches that, though.
I loved the book, but a few friends told me that the movie basically turned the book into Twilight.
Would you guys agree with them? Did the emphasis turn from conflict and violence to romance?

The emphasis on the book was never conflict and violence, how many people did Katniss actually kill? She spent most the time worrying about guys in her life and her feelings, while counting the dead people in the sky. It was romance through and through. Katniss spent god knows how many chapters in a cave practically sucking the guys dick to make him feel better and get presents, the whole time she's wondering if she actually likes him or just wants to win.
It was a romance, just one bedded in action.
From what I've heard the film picked up on this pretty loyally.

I'm surprised this didn't have a thread already actually. the film made about $20 before it even opened. What a sad waste of OP. I'm sad now.
IT seemed based heavily on battle royale. The ending was kinda sad, to me it was kind of a reflection on how when people are young they are rebellious then become indoctrinated into the system and settle for something they are not entirely happy with. Very sad
From the perspective of a person who has not read the books, if you think that the movie's crap because they toned down the gore, you have missed the point entirely! They were ultimately irrelevent.
Yeah I thought it was alright. I honestly was only bothered by the camera work for the last fight scene, but if the two guys weren't dressed somewhat the same and fighting in the dark I probably could've followed it better, fucking hell.
Given the box office numbers this movie looks to be about to take in on it's opening weekend it looks like this is shaping up to be the new twilight book-based movie phenomenon. I'm ok with that.
Also some stupid bitch with a horrid grating voice screamed at the top of her lungs before the movie started "WHO'S HERE FOR DISTRICT TWEEEEEEELVE!!!!!!" and absolute silence (thankfully) followed, before some awesome guy with a lisp shouted back "LADY, YOU NEED A DRINK". Laughed more at that then anything else in the film.

If this does become as big as Twilight, I will be happy. Deserved success in Hollywood blockbusters is rare and should be cherished

All that happened to me at the theater was some chunky lady accusing me of stealing her ticket...
All that happened to me at the theater was some chunky lady accusing me of stealing her ticket...
When I saw it, the sound cut out 3 times and the movie had to be rewinded, and the lights came up twice [sp]including when rue died, totally ruined the mood[/sp]. Thankfully I got a free movie pass out of it.
I'm glad the movie followed the book so well and still managed to expand upon it in ways that made sense. All in all, it was a good movie. (except for the camera shake in the final fight, what the hell)
[sp]i actually laughed when rue died[/sp]
but only because all of a sudden everyone in the theater started sniffling and shit and i just found that funny as fuck and i lost it
Wired put out an interesting article on Katniss' role in future female leads. I quite agree.
After seeing the movie, the only moment that really bugged me was the shaky cam during the last fight. At the same time, my friend and I agree that it was really well done compared to some other book conversions (e.g. the majority of the Harry Potter series). I really liked the pacing, and although the shaky cam wasn't that great, the vast majority of the time it was used to skirt around getting rated "R" for goring up teenagers.

The vast majority of the time in the books, the deaths were used to set the tone of how gruesome the games truly were. Everything was also from Katniss' perspective, and again, that was used to emphasize how horrific it was. The movie did a fine job without the gore.

I've never seen Battle Royale, but from what I've heard it has the same arena style that this has. Does it carry the same political revolution that happens in the later books, though (Catching Fire & Mockingjay)?
I really want to read the books now. Anyone have a list of the books?

If you read the books, the description used was a lot more saddening than what the movie portrayed. In the books, Rue has a very significant role (to the point where she shares the same sleeping bag as Katniss) when compared to what the movie had. The poem that Katniss sings is drastically shortened in comparison to what the book has as well (that section here: http://puu.sh/mgfU ).

It wasn't really shown in the movie, but his only job was wiring the explosives. When everything exploded, it genuinely was his fault.
I laughed when [sp]the food got blown up and he twisted the little kids head[/sp]
twisted his head is an interesting way to say breaking his neck
the movie was good, but it could have been so much better. when I look at it, I'm not sure if I should think "good film" or "wasted potential"

Actually from Catching fire and onwards, she's less of a heroine to be more like a puppet. [sp]district 13 uses her as the image of the revolution against her will and she just wants it all over so that she can go back to what she had before the games, and then has an emotional breakdown after losing her sister, the one she cared the most about.[/sp]

It was 2 1/2 hours long and did a good job following the books. I think it was a good movie.
