I do agree with him how different WoW felt around the time it came out. I felt i was about to jump into this massive worlds with lots of people people including my friends and we had an incredible time for 3 years. After that it went from a jolly colorful Warcraft game to more serious 'gotta go level up' stylish game. That or my friends just didn't knew how to have fun.
Which is why again i hope Wildstar is going to be a success with its colorful worlds and fun looking characters.

I sunk so many hours into WoW basically just exploring, I was part of an exploration community in vanilla and we practiced techniques like wall jumping for hours, then spent further hours trying to climb to the most stupid places and find ways to get out of the map.
It was hella fun, it took hours but one time I found a neat path to climb from outside of Org and run all the way along the top of the cliffs, then drop down through Thrall's building and land on the banner right above him. I taught two guild members and as a warlock, went there with them then summoned everyone for a surprise attack on Thrall. Screenshot: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/nightmarejkiii/WoW/WoWScrnShot_071407_160348-1.jpg (800x600 resolution, when I started I played the game with 256mb RAM and like an 80gb HDD, after a year or so of intense lag spikes I paid almost $100 for 1gb RAM and it sped it up massively)
I did so much exploration and it was tons of fun finding easter eggs and unfinished/cut content (Lower Ironforge, hidden campsites, flag on top of IF), spending ages climbing mountains and buildings. Then they nerfed wall climbing into the ground :(
Half the fun of the game was just the experiences, with the global LFG channel in vanilla we ended up having server wide celebrities and a real community spirit going on. Now the game is just like a big grindy blur...Everyone is just focused on getting their next piece of gear or levelling up as fast as possible and they don't care about interacting with anyone else or having a good time.

This is the problem I have with WoW. It seems like nobody wants to just have fun. They take it super serious and if you make even one mistake you're a moron and get ridiculed and kicked out of whatever group you're in.
Now all anyone wants to do (from my experience) is grind gear and levels.
I'll admit I never played it when it first came out but my friends used to talk about it all the time. They'd go on and on about all the cool and funny shit they did. Then as the years went on all they started talking about was clan applications, gear, and percentage points and shit.

I remember WoW used to be fun. Then came the gearscore addon and everyone became elitist as fuck and looked down on anyone having a score below the accepted threshold of the moment.
As a raidleader i tried to be forgiving to people being new to things in the game but after a while it became clear raids changed from being a team effort to being someones best interest in getting their loot.
During and after playing WoW i tried several other MMO's but none of them have the same charm and are often cluttered with panels and menus.

There are plenty of avenues to take if you want WoW to be a more social experience. Just don't expect everyone else to play to your standards. Some people do just play the game like they doDiablo or Torchlight, as a gear hunt.

I'll let you in on a secret: There have been elitist elements of the community since the day the game launched.
