Yeah, the new start menu looks kinda neat.
I'm still irked by the fact they refer to programs as 'apps'. It's a very minor semantical thing but in my mind, a phone has apps and a computer has programs.
A TV has programs, a computer has applications (apps)

You got it right garry.
Apps are the hip new thing, instead of programs. Micro$oft is just trying to fit in with the crowd.
Wish there was an option so when you hit the windows key it takes you to the desktop not to the metro menu :(
I don't like calling Windows programs apps because of smartphones. Apps are for your average consumer electronics user. Programs are for power users.

Do any modern computer course, they're apps.
Why does it even matter whether it's application or program? they literally mean the same thing and you guys know that. I find it funny that this is being focused on, guess it means the hate bandwagon is out of fuel

Do i have to call myself an apper instead of a programmer now?
Mac programs have been called apps since forever

Holy shit they made the right-click menu actually behave consistently in both modes

This was one of the most glaring indications to me that 8 was two different OSes thrown together

If you use StartIsBack, update to the latest version for full Update 1 support
Did they finally fix that bug that kept your computer from detecting network drivers? If so, I may just finally upgrade to 8.1.
I was hoping they'd make it so you could run metro apps with UAC off
nope
oh well
It was never bad in the first place, just a bandwagon of Windows 8 hating because of some reasons.
Ofc, It might not be worth the cost of upgrading for some.
And I really don't think personally that the start screen was any good in Windows 7, hopefully they won't just copy paste that with metro apps included.(I never used the start button thingy cause I thought it wasn't good).
But this is all opinion anyway because it isn't broken or more broken then Windows 7
Cool update but I think I will wait for the start menu update whenever that gets added.
I just updated trough Windows Update and nothing changed, weird. Maybe because my ultrabook has a touchscreen?

Look at your update history and check if you have KB2919355 installed
For some reason by default it's not ticked in windows update even though it's set as recommended

It is coming to windows 9
I wish I could make my own tiles.

And here was I, thinking that TV had shows.
pcgamesn writers are worse than kotaku ones (well maybe because kotaku stuff doesn't reach FP popular)
For one, it’s blazingly fast: I’m still a little bit surprised just how quickly it will get to the desktop. For another, I’ve found that snapping some Windows Store apps on a multi-monitor desktop computer is quite useful - in my case I’ve permanently got Skype and some more messaging apps available on a second monitor. It’s blast proof: I think I’ve seen just handful of blue screens in the past six months of using it. And as Steve mentioned in our podcast, it also has some exceptional loading bars.
so the guy's admitting that he's a whiny baby about having to click once to get to his desktop or twice to shut down his computer, because all of that has been around since day one (besides snapping, which was introduced in 8.1, six months ago)

He's also wrong, you could boot straight to desktop even in 8.1, and to shut it down you can right click on the start button, hover the mouse over "Shut down or sign out", and click shut down

How did you get the update?
The article doesn't say shit about how to get it, and google yields no results.
Windows update doesn't have it, I can't find it in the Windows Store either.
[editline]o[/editline]
oh they edited the article to say that you get it via Windows Update.
So, it's one of those 3-4 generic security updates? I figured it'd have a more proper name.

Windows Update, it shows as "Windows 8.1 Update for x64-based systems"
Tried clicking 'check for updates'?

I figured that was just a generic security update, I expected this to be more like when Windows 8.1 came out.

It's KB2919355
You should try the pre-release versions and you will find out how much they had desktops in mind. You might start to notice everything with the mouse is extremely buggy.
I actaully did and they were just fine I loved it back then and love it now.
People were just scared about windows becoming closed off due to the store,
