• Hawking on Religion: 'Science will Win'

[release]Celebrated physicist Stephen Hawking knows more about the universe than almost any other person ever to walk the planet, but some answers still escape even him. When asked by ABC News' Diane Sawyer about the biggest mystery he'd like solved, he said, "I want to know why the universe exists, why there is something greater than nothing." Hawking, who was honored last week at the World Science Festival in New York, is famous for probing the deepest questions of the cosmos. Until he stepped down last fall, he held the post of Lucasian professor of mathematics at Cambridge University, a position once held by Sir Isaac Newton, the "father of physics" himself. Unnecessary thread, of course he's not religious. I wouldn't be if I had his disease.

Again, you state what you've already said.
Hawking is going to have a religious outcry against him
inb4 shitstorm
NO SHIT?! Seriously this is like asking the pope the same question
Stephen Hawking has contributed so much to science and astronomy. :science:
Steven Hawking is the Sigmund Freud of astrophysics.
Isn't being disabled a sin or something? Maybe he's just pissed at that
You're goddamn right science will win!
Stephen Hawking is the 2nd smartest guy in modern times, next to Einstien. I wonder if he could've accomplished even more than he has if he wasn't disabled
Unnecessary thread, of course he's not religious. I wouldn't be if I had his disease.
The fuck are you talking about? He was told when he was diagnosed he probably only had 2 or 3 years left. THAT WAS 47 YEARS AGO. If anyone has reason to believe in God it's him. That or he's got more willpower than the rest of the human race combined and we should elect him Emperor of Mankind.
"Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet." I do that, and that's why I want to study astrophysics.
He iz an athest so dats why JEsus made him an cripple. :downs:

I can see why people attack Dawkins, pretty smug, perhaps arrogant. But Hawkins is practically invincible....
He's such a pimp.
amen.
Steven Hawking is the Sigmund Freud of astrophysics.
Freud was addicted to crack cocaine and thought it was a miracle cure-all for disorders such as depression and sexual impotence
He's right- as he has been the rest of his life. I think this guy knows more than we can even imagine, but he can't express it due to his disability (as it is it takes him more than a week to write out a page of text for his computer)
The day Hawking dies will be an immensely sad one and a huge loss for humanity.
Freud was addicted to crack cocaine and thought it was a miracle cure-all for disorders such as depression and sexual impotence
Also, incest.
No afterlife for him then.
The day Hawking dies will be an immensely sad one and a huge loss for humanity.
It's true. His life has been absolutely remarkable. Doctors told him he'd die LONG ago, when he was around 22- far before he'd accomplished anything. Look at him now. [editline]08:14PM[/editline]
No afterlife for him then.
I'm not religious, but I believe in the Bible there's a verse that states that we, as humans, are to improve the quality of life for others... What has done that other than science? Certainly not religion... Refer to the religious crusades, Muslim extremists, etc.

Saying religion only causes bad things would be like saying the only thing science did was make an Atom Bomb that can kill millions, and you know as well as I do that that isnt true.
amen.
Was that a pun? Because :fuckyou:

If the atom bomb wasn't created, MUCH more blood would've been shed overall.

I have a hard time beliving Hawking would ask the question, "Why does existence exist" as it has a very simple answer. Being that existence; meaning the totality of everything, cannot not exist, and thus cannot come into being. The question of "What existed before nothing existed and what nothings gave rise to everything" is absurdly silly, you'd think Hawking would realize that.
