I'm not religious, but I believe in the Bible there's a verse that states that we, as humans, are to improve the quality of life for others... What has done that other than science? Certainly not religion... Refer to the religious crusades, Muslim extremists, etc.

A lot of medical breakthroughs of the olden days were done because of churches, it pretty much let us know as much as we know now about ancient history(Islam keeping Roman and Greek records and literature etc.) It brought MANY people together for good purposes before we had 100 different branch offs for every religion. Saying religion only causes bad things would be like saying the only thing science did was make an Atom Bomb that can kill millions, and you know as well as I do that that isnt true.

I have a hard time beliving Hawking would ask the question, "Why does existence exist" as it has a very simple answer.
Being that existence; meaning the totality of everything, cannot not exist, and thus cannot come into being.
The question of "What existed before nothing existed and what nothings gave rise to everything" is absurdly silly, you'd think Hawking would realize that.
