"Narrative experience"
Call of Duty
But I do agree with the easy to jump in and play multiplayer, it appeales to an incredible large audience.
The only thing CoD makes right with the experience is the presentation.
It's like a Michael Bay movie. And his movies make a lot of money too, so yeah, people like getting explosions and slow mos thrown at their face.

But just like Michael Bay movies, CoD has as much narration as a sack of potatoes.
Well, again, Black Ops 2 tried to be a little bit more than just simple, "STOP THE RUSSIANS, OH NO THE GUY YOU WORK WITH IS BAD TOO / SOMETHING TERRIBLE HAPPENS, DEAD HERO, KILL THEM ALL", but I gotta agree that, at this point, the series is a multiplayer cashcow rather than a singleplayer-oriented one by any means.
Would've been cool to actually go through historically accurate battles again, even if it's not World War 2, though.
Only thing I hate about CoD is lag compensation

I can consider Call of Duty as a narrative experience (sort of) since the original's campaign was so authentic for the time.
my dad plays the shit out of CoD1: united offensive and (no bias or such) hes extremely good at it
I enjoy playing Call of Duty because they aren't really bad, but I never buy them. I either play them on free weekends, rent them, or play them at a friend's house.
call of duty isn't a bad game by any means but it's ruining the first person genre. the influence that it has over other first person shooters is undeniable and I'm getting so sick of playing what is basically the same game in a different setting each time.

I personally disagree with people who say that CoD is ruining the FPS genre. I think it's just developers that are afraid to explore something new and actually make it play well. We aren't ever going to get out of this age of the same rehashed shit if developers are not willing to make innovative FPS games. I think the only reason why CoD games(or CoD styled games) are selling so well is because there isn't much else on the market that is as easy to get into and have fun with.

The problem isn't games developers, the problem is publishers. Look at how Infinity Ward split after CoD4, and look at how franchises have been trashed by publisher acquisition. That should say it all.

Yup. It's pretty much because of out of touch publishers trying to tell developers how to make their game.

Does anyone have an actual source on this actually SIGNIFICANTLY changing a game or is it just dumb speculation?
The money to develop games usually comes from the publisher. That's what they're there for. You are very silly if you think the publisher doesn't care about where their money goes. They want what will bring them maximum profit, not risks.
Publisher needs the game to sell a fuckton of copies. The developer's job is to develop the game. It's kind of Treyarch or IW's fault if their game sucks, especially considering the colossal amount of funding they get.
For the most part, Call of Duty games are solid and fun, so they're doing a nice job. Just because they are too "casual" for PC gamers like us doesn't mean that they're inherently bad games.
MW2 was pretty much the first AAA FPS game I played, it was tons of fun and it lasted about 414 hours. I tried the other games and liked Cod4 the most out of any of them. Black Ops had enjoyable multiplayer and I liked the campaign. I got bored of MW3 very quickly, it was bland and the lag compensation was disastrous. BO2 was better than MW3 but not as enjoyable as the earlier games, and I never finished the campaign, finding out half way through that there were alternate endings and realizing I probably picked all the shitty decisions.
also IW/3A are very trusted developers considering the gigantic profit they've made activision, so chances are they have plenty of freedom as long as they don't fuck with the core "shoot guys with the guns and run" formula.
the multiplayer is addicting, and even though its just a call of duty with a new coat of paint, its still Call of duty and i like to think of it as "if it aint broke, dont fix it!".
Each year CoD breaks some sort of sales record, they must be doin something right!
Yeah the multiplayer is what makes Call of Duty, and although it might not be something special, it's addictive, at least for a lot of people including myself. Although I really dislike the fact that they release a new one every year with such minor differences, I've still got modern warfare 2, I was planning to get black ops 2 but soon that will be obsolete
Call of Duty X? I guess they ran out of names to fit it in.
