Political people in the United States are watching the chaos in Washington in the moment. But some people in the science community are watching the chaos somewhere else — the Arctic.
It’s polar night there now — the sun isn’t rising in much of the Arctic. That’s when the Arctic is supposed to get super-cold, when the sea ice that covers the vast Arctic Ocean is supposed to grow and thicken.
But in fall of 2016 — which has been a zany year for the region, with multiple records set for low levels of monthly sea ice — something is totally off. The Arctic is super-hot, even as a vast area of cold polar air has been displaced over Siberia.
[...]
“It’s about 20C [36 degrees Fahrenheit] warmer than normal over most of the Arctic Ocean, along with cold anomalies of about the same magnitude over north-central Asia,” Jennifer Francis, an Arctic specialist at Rutgers University, said by email Wednesday.

Sorry Polar Bears, I guess it's your time the humans make you extinct!
Does this mean melting will continue through the winter?
does that mean we are fucked even faster than thought previously?
Well, here goes nothing.
Auf Wiedersehen, environment.
Global warming should just fuck off at this point.
2016 as a whole should fuck off.
Do we panic?
Good thing our new president elect plans to eliminate almost every existing environmental regulation because he chooses to push the narrative that climate change is a hoax. You think the Syrian refugee crisis is bad? Wait until most of humanity's coastal cities flood, global fisheries collapse, and desertification wipes out our farm belts. Thanks, climate change deniers, and a very special thank you to President Elect Trump and his cadre of anti-intellectual populists!
2016 as a whole should fuck off.
Wait until you meet his brother, 2017.
we're fucked
So about those crackpot theories climate change deniers have that all the researchers formed a cabal dedicated to falsifying or exaggerating reports about climate change, I'm prepared to bet those people are still going to stick their fingers in their ears and say that all of this is patently false and completely made up.
Do we panic?
nope, things will get even worse if we panic
urgent action yes but panic? to whom? so doctors dose you with anti-anxiety pills or something :v:
Well jeepers, it's almost like climate change actually exists and denialists deserve to be publicly flogged for their stupidity/dishonesty...
Take this story, mash it up with this story

And you've got yourself a pretty neat sci-fi script.

My dad consistently votes Democrat and supports me as his gay son and yet still doesn't believe in climate change. He's convinced that it's a hoax to support carbon-emission taxation to help the rich.
Misinformation and confirmation bias are very strange things.
We were fucked the second the enviroment became a partisan issue. Because it used to not be, i mean ffs the epa was created under Nixon.
Do we panic?
Only if you have not done so for the last few dozen global warming news articles posted in SH this year.
We get it. There's a problem. You know what happens if you go over quota on these reminders? people stop caring because they become annoying as fuck pink noise somewhere between the rainforests being deforested and orphans of war.
you should use celsius in scientific article headlines

It's all Russia's fault :russia:

It's not like this is all America's fault. China is the biggest polluter in the world and if you want to stop global warming, pressure the Chinese government into accepting environmental regulations. Of course America was probably the only one who had the power to do this and now they won't, but still.

Actually, hasn't China been making a major push towards cleaner energy?
American climate politics really became doomed when it became socially acceptable to buy votes in Congress.

China is going forward with the Paris Accords
Trump wants to pull out completely of those.
Per capita, perhaps China pollutes more. But policy wise for the long term, the US is the "bad guy" of climate change.
I believe it, this october we all wore shorts due to it being high 80s. Plus weve had the biggest drought in like 20 years.
My city can relate
We've always had hideous winters, however over the past bunch of years they've been starting later and later.
It's incredible, there have been American cities that have already gotten snowfall, and here we are higher north than them and still have green grass and no snow.
I've never seen such a late winter here before. If we could last just 1 1/2 more weeks - until the beginning of december without any snow, that would be amazing

China is doing a lot more than the US.
Wheres Kigen when you need 'em.

China is investing heavily in clean energy sources, from hydro-electric, to nuclear, and solar.
The US had a head start for renewables, but at this rate China is going to overtake the US in clean energy.

I still can't believe him of all people would do this. And when I say him, I say someone who made it to president.
It's like denying everything even though proof is right in front of you.

You mistyped Kelvin.
