Inmates given jobs in call centres in the West Midlands
Convicted criminals in the West Midlands are being paid to work in call centres inside their prisons.Inmates at HMP Oakwood, near Wolverhampton, and Drake Hall, in Staffordshire, carry out market research for insurance companies.
The Centre for Crime Prevention said the project was "incredibly naive".
But the Ministry of Justice said it was a pilot scheme which may be rolled out further if it is successful, and added the prisoners have risk assessments.
A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Justice said: "We do not want prisoners sitting idle in their cells when they should be working towards their rehabilitation.
If you ask me they should be doing something that gives them some marketable skills for when they get out of their so-called "rehabilitation"/imprisonment and not just being basically enslaved by corporations for pennies an hour taking up positions that could be good for non-imprisoned unemployed people.
I can imagine it now, some guy on the other end yelling profusely about how companies are hounding him then hearing, "do you wanna fuck'n die? just listen" on the other end. :v:
I think giving prisoners jobs is a good idea as it gets them work experience and allows them to do something productive. However I do have to question the wisdom in giving them call centre jobs.
What if their criminal contacts on the outside call the call center office? Then they have unmitigated access to the outside world and can coordinate dastardly things.

I would imagine that they're supervised whilst this is happening.
Well, if they weren't dangerous before, they sure as hell will be after working at a call center.
I worked at a trailer manufacturing plant for a few years that hired prisoners and i don't think its a good idea. They didn't give a fuck and the quality of the trailers went downhill when over 50% of the workforce became prisoners. They replaced normal citizens with prisoners because they were cheap.
Hasn't this been done already? Long as their people put in jail for charges that aren't major and people that want to turn their life around, it's a good start to a new life
But now who will make our license plates and coat hangers?
American inmates?

I doubt they'll give the jobs to the most violent, mentally unstable criminals.
These jobs will probably go to small time things for people with only a few year sentences.
Probably an earned privilege for long periods of good behavior so no need to question the legitimacy of something so obvious.

Not how it works, a computer does all the calling, the inmates just get someone's title and surname, connected to them and have to talk through a questionnaire.
And here I am living in the West Midlands desperately looking for a job. Aw man.
