So, literally about 20 minutes ago i dropped my phone into a bath whilst it was on charge. As soon as it dropped, i pulled it out straight away, the screen was on, but covered in water, so i quickly wiped it with a towel, ripped the battery cover off, then pulled the battery out.
My understanding, is that none of the internals would be shorted out if the battery was pulled out in time. Anyway, i dismantled it immediately, used a scrunched up paper tower to dab all the circuit board, and underneath the little "modular" clips that the phone has to connect various devices to the board so that it all looked visibly bone dry, but i know that certain ports, such as the charging port, the line-in port, and the speaker would all still have moisture inside, so as of right now, the circuit board, frame, and separate speaker module are all sitting in a small tub of rice with 2 packets of silica gel, i'm going to leave them all to dry for about 12 hours.
Seeing as the screen was on and the phone was functioning right before i took the battery out, would this mean that i have a better chance of it working after i re-assemble it after giving it time to completely dry?
Leave it for longer than 12 hours, I gave my girlfriend's phone overnight and it was able to turn on but finally shorted out after that.
I think Linus did the same-ish experiment with a laptop (except he left it out in the rain). Left it a week propped up in the dry (with a fan?), opened out to let it air and it booted in the end perfectly. Point is it might be worth giving it longer than 48 hours just to be safe.
Thanks for the feedback guys, i'll definitely leave it longer than 2 days, i can survive without it for the time being
Dropped my phone in water, 4 days in a tub of rice worked.
It helps if you leave it in a warmish place like an airing cupboard so the liquid shifts faster.
Quick update, I frequently used a hair dryer to blow hot-air at the bottom of the tub of rice and silica ad to heat up the environment inside, after I'd left it for 16 hours i re-assembled the phone, cleaned it with some ethanol, and it works fully.
