£1.85b Indiegogo Campaign Launched To Build Lord Of The Rings City Minas Tirith
A group of architects are hoping to raise almost £2 billion to build a real-life version of Minas Tirith, the great city of Tolkien’s Middle Earth.
They have 60 days in which to raise the not inconsiderable sum of money, through an IndieGoGo page (at the time of writing, they’ve hauled in over £8000, so there’s a little way to go).
“We are an ambitious team of architects and structural engineers who are passionate about creating a beautiful, inspirational and fully-functioning replica of Peter Jackson’s depiction of Minas Tirith, as seen in his Lord of the Rings films,” writes campaign leader Jonathan Wilson.
“We all share a love of Tolkien’s work, and a desire to challenge the common perception of community and architecture.
“We believe that, in realising Minas Tirith, we can create not only the most remarkable tourist attraction on the planet, but also a wonderfully unique place to live and work.
“We aim to create both residential and commercial properties, allowing for sustainable growth and a high quality of life.”
It’s hoped that should the sum be raised – when rather than if, right? - construction would begin by the end of 2016, and be completed in 2023.
They want to raise almost £2,000,000,000 GBP in 60 days?
Gooooood luck
I've a feeling £2b won't cut it.
In dollars it's $2.9b, that's how absurd it is.
Why not try and do something of a smaller scale to prove that have the skill and knowledge to do it?
You know like the Shire or something?
And in any case even if they did manage to raise enough money for this the project this is going to take decades to complete and there is no guarantee that it will get finished, there could be another financial crash they could get into legal trouble.
I mean sure it sounds awesome but I'm not sure.
this is literally a joke and you guys seem to be taking it seriously

Where do you get the insinuation that it is a joke? This seems pretty serious to me.

The Shire does exist, at least to a certain extend. The filming of it was on location.

There's actually a turism industry around this.
Like some have said, they need to prove their credentials. I would suggest a human-sized Shire with modern luxuries like internet and electricity.

I don't think it's really a joke, more along the lines of "It's a fun idea and if it works, great! If not, nevermind!"
Also possibly they're just doing it to raise publicity for themselves, knowing it will fail but making a name for themselves.
Wouldn't be shocked if celebrities, sports stars and tech moneys start hopping into this just because they can. If that does happen this might just reach it's goal. They're offering properties in this place for god sake.
Although I'm not saying £1.85 billion will cut it.

Get the UAE involved. They seem to like dumping cash into weird megaprojects.

Would probably put it far enough that you can start realistically selling properties in it though.
Guess i know where i'm gonna spend the rest of my life if this happens.
In all honesty I would love to live in a high-fantasy like kingdom. Just imagine living in a place like Lordran from Dark Souls...minus the undead curse and everything that wants to kill you.
flexed funding.....
I'd like to see more of these kind of places being funded and built though, if I was mega rich I'd absolutely buy a place there even though I'm not even that much of a LotR fan. I'd probably make it my life's goal to own a place in the real life replica of Novigrad or Solitude if that ever became a thing though.
Cool idea, I doubt its really attainable though...
We should use this money to build the Death Star instead
This would be really cool to see but I just don't think it's possible to convince people to pay, collectively, $3,000,000,000. Especially when that money could go to more important things. I know it doesn't, but it could.
No chance, if they were building Helms deep that might work.

Yeah like a Helm's Deep recreation
Maybe I can't see some of the tiers, but even if every active Twitter user supported them - they still wouldn't get funded (assuming all the other rewards are claimed).
you could use the money to, you know, something more useful like ending fucking world hunger and stopping millions of people dying instead of some bullshit fake fantastical realm that only exists inside a fucking tv show

Tell me then, apart from what is needed for bare sustenance, do you donate all of your income to "ending world hunger"?

You've got it-- fun shouldn't exist until we've cured all of the world's problems. Now go sell your computer and donate it to charity.

You're right, african children could eat this money instead.
