• Obama vetoes ban of older-model iPhones and iPads
The Obama administration has vetoed a federal commission’s ban that would have forced Apple to stop selling some iPhones and iPads in the United States next week, a rare intervention by the White House and a victory for Apple in its heated patent war with Samsung Electronics. The United States International Trade Commission in June ordered a ban of older-model Apple products that worked with AT&T’s network, including the iPhone 4 and 3GS, after determining that Apple had violated a patent that Samsung owned related to transmission of data over cellular networks. The administration had until Monday to weigh in. mobile.nytimes.com/blogs/bits/2013/08/03/obama-administration-overturns-ban-on-apple-products/?client=ms-opera-mobile&channel=new&_r=0&
Its okay to break laws as long as youre an American corporation.
Its okay to break laws as long as youre an American corporation.
It's not like the other companies haven't tried to break apple's patents.
To be fair, the whole fiasco surrounding the ban and the patent bullshit that came with it was pretty damn stupid to begin with.
what are the basis for the veto?
First term Obama I was pretty neutral to, second term Obama I dislike.
what are the basis for the veto?
literally that it would "affect the us global trading economy too much" I.e America will go broke if apple stops selling phones.
literally that it would "affect the us global trading economy too much" I.e America will go broke if apple stops selling phones.
I can see Samsung and others become money grubbers once their largest competitor goes down, but that is still a stupid reason. Laws are laws.
wow what an awful thread title
Apple had violated a patent that Samsung owned related to transmission of data over cellular networks
What are the details of this because that sounds like a fucking retarded patent, even more so than usual.
Its okay to break laws as long as youre an American corporation.
US Patent laws are complete and utter bullshit when it comes to the tech industry. So bullshit that tech companies stockpile them just so that when others come after them they can fuck over the other company just as much as they would get fucked over. These patents can be as simple as literally "The ability to send data through the air through a combination of signals" without an exact method. Just a vague description of what is happening.
First term Obama I was pretty neutral to, second term Obama I dislike.
People were hopeful for something good which is naive but understandable, and now people realise in the US and in other countries that it really doesn't matter who you vote for

Obama uses a Macbook... Apple is clearly the President... Or maybe the real life Skynet.
There are consequences to voting for certain politicians. Now you know.
What are the details of this because that sounds like a fucking retarded patent, even more so than usual.
At least a patent for transmission of data sounds like it might have cost serious R+D money, GSM, 3G and 4G networks all had to be researched and developed; it's not like it was a patent for rounded corners. It's pretty absurd for Apple to try and give Samsung shit over trying to use patents to their advantage too. In any case, the writing is on the wall, Apple is going to need to actually do something besides lawsuits to survive in the long term.
Be sure to vote for Mickey Mouse next time.
Apple and Samsung need to fuck and move on
There are consequences to voting for certain politicians. Worst part is that it's not even the people who choose who leads the country and the congress pretty much runs everything anyway.
Be sure to vote for Mickey Mouse next time.
Pfft, Donald Duck 2016

And whereas the rounded corner patents are actually to stop things that look exactly the same as an iPad/iPhone (like cheap chinese knock offs), this patent sounds like something that would really stifle innovation and competition.
I absolutely hate what apple was/is doing pertaining to patent trolling, but this ban was just bullshit. Hopefully it leads to comprehensive reform of the patent system.
Seriously guys, giving samsung or any other company an effective monopoly no matter how much you like them is a bad idea.

I was Anti-Obama before it was cool.
oh no not iphone 4 and 3gs! samsung is doomed!
patients over technology will hold the human race back.

It could mean something as simple that they patented the concept to even send data over a network, or it could be something to do with the technical side of things, from the network stack to multiple other things which do have serious RnD costs associated with them and do exist to improve the network itself concretely.
They're the biggest reason why so much funding is put forward to new technology though. It's all about money.
First term Obama I was pretty neutral to, second term Obama I dislike.
Makes me wonder why we even have second terms. I mean he isn't the first.
So it was more like 'Lets vote for someone who might do the less amount of damage"
Too bad that didn't work so well.
Looks like actively participating in mobile surveillance operations abroad has its benefits.
